This is what College and Spadina looks like right now

College SpadinaThe TTC closed the intersection of College and Spadina at the outset of the week to replace its aging streetcar tracks. The closure is scheduled to last three weeks (until April 27), which sounds pretty horrible until you get a sense of what a huge undertaking the work is.

Case in point: the intersection has only been under construction since Monday, but it's already been completely gutted. It's not like you can accuse the workers of moving slowly. It's actually quite remarkable to see how quickly the teardown process takes place, and rather odd to get a glimpse of the intersection in this state.

The work at College and Spadina is part of an extensive program of upgrades that the TTC is doing to worn out streetcar tracks, which has included other major intersections along Spadina (including King, Queen, and Dundas). On the bright side, the next replacement won't take place for over 50 years.

cheesecake torontoThe best cheesecake in Toronto can be had at bakeries and cafes where the indulgent dairy-lovers treat is put on a pedestal (or at least displayed prominently in the pastry case). These cakes are rich and moist, some served perfectly plain while others are made even more decadent with the addition of fruit, chocolate or candy pieces.

Here are the best cheesecakes in Toronto.

Drone Day to return to Toronto for second year

drone day toronto 2015National Drone Day, undoubtedly one of Canada's newest and most unique holidays (its inaugural appearance was May 10, 2014) will return in 2015 on May 9 with over twenty events across Canada from Halifax to Iqaluit.

Not an excuse for Deadmau5 to shoot at flying gadgets, Drone Day is rather a celebration of drone music's dreamy or foreboding, nearly formless sound - think that Justin Bieber song slowed down 800%, Nadja's most ambient works, or the gentle hum of your space heater. Yes, Canada has a day entirely focused around experimental music. Maybe we're not so messed up after all.

Drone Day is an initiative from Weird Canada and Wyrd Distro's Marie Claire Flanagan, who states: "Drone music... is a re-imagining, a redefining of the ears' relationship to silence... easy to understand but broad enough to encapsulate a wide variety of experimental streams. It's a fixed-point singleton for the avant-garde; challenging, yet accessible to the layperson, with a creative path stretching onto infinite horizons."

Toronto's only 2015 event so far is the return of Ambient Ping's matinee, moving from Array Space to napper's paradise Ratio on College from 2:15-4:30pm sharp with Anomolous Distubances (Vancouver) and dreamSTATE. 2014 also featured evening events at the Tranzac with Black Walls and at May with Egyptrixx's A/B til Infinity (and napping couches).

More events around Toronto will be announced in the coming weeks. If you'd like to participate in Drone Day, email Weird Canada.

Will you take a drone selfie on Drone Day? Let us know in the comments.

Toronto FC to host Man City for friendly this spring

man city friendlyManchester City will take on Toronto FC in a friendly on May 27th. This will be a chance for local football fans to see European league stars like Sergio Agüero and David Silva perform on the field at BMO Field.

The last friendly the club hosted was with Tottenham Hotspur F.C., which was particularly charged given that it pitted Jermain Defoe against his old team. That sort of drama won't exist this time around, but the star power of Man City will surely be enough to cram the the newly upgraded BMO Field come game time.

Season ticket holders have first crack at tickets to the match, while the public have their chance as of April 16.

Huge foam party planned for Canada Day in Toronto

foam party torontoA huge foam party is set to mark Canada Day in Toronto. Because what better way to celebrate Confederation than by getting liquored on Smirnoff Ice and doused with foam? It just...makes sense.

The time and location of this glorious event is TBA, but I can tell you that's it's being organized by tdotclubs, who have done this sort of thing before. Photos of last year's event at Tryst Nightclub give some indication of what's in store.

That said, a bigger venue might be in order. I'm not sure that anyone could have predicted the interest that this event has already generated. Having been posted to Facebook on Monday, there are already 4,600 people who plan to attend.

Better hope there's enough foam. Check out the event page for updates.

Exploding Kittens coming to Toronto

exploding kittens torontoTurn your kitties away from the screen or just hide them in a box for a few minutes so they don't see your face overcome with evil glee: Toronto has been chosen as a testing zone for the comical card game that's already become an internet sensation: Exploding Kittens.

Cartoonist Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal created one of the most successful Kickstarters of all time for the game, which combines cats, explosions, and laserbeams in a quest to save innocent cartoon kitties from, well, exploding.

The first game day is Thursday, April 9th downtown at Rogers Communcations Centre (80 Gould Street) from 4-8pm (they say they may go later), with a second play date at Face to Face Games (2077a Danforth Ave, by Woodbine Station) on Saturday, April 11th from 11am-8pm.

Just tell your cat you were out playing Cards Against Humanity.

uncle tetsu torontoIt's been open for three weeks, and the line-ups have not let up since day one. Everyone has gone crazy for this light-as-a-cloud cheesecake that originated in Fukuoka, Japan that has taken Asia by storm. This location at Bay and Dundas is the first outside of the Asian continent, and with wait times that can go up to three hours, it's proving to be a resounding success.

Toronto's first Pan Am Games store is open for business

Pan Am games store torontoThe Pan Am Games are less than 100 days away, and there's plenty of lead-up activity that's starting to take shape. One example of this is the launch of a new merch store, which has just opened for business online and at the Eaton Centre.

The shop stocks all your standard merch items, from souvenirs to clothing, much of it branded with the super cheerful mascot Pachi. Personally I find this little porcupine vaguely creepy, but I can see kids embracing his over-the-top enthusiasm.

I'd suggest that many of these items strike me as the type of thing that someone will stumble upon at a thrift shop in 25 years and scratch their head in wonder over why anyone might have bought a Pan Am Games shot glass in the first place. But who knows? I still get excited when I run across CN Tower-branded merch from the 80s, so maybe this stuff will sell like hot cakes.

New map charts Toronto's travel patterns

toronto travel patternsThis rather fascinating map made an appearance on Reddit earlier today. Using data collected from the last Transportation Tomorrow survey, it charts travel patterns throughout Toronto. As is so often the case with maps like this, it's intriguing to identify geographic landmarks that are revealed by the information being plotted.

By way of example, the veritable explosion out of Union Station highlights just how crucial a transit up it is. Also easy to spot are hubs like Pearson International, Downsview Station, and the Yonge St. corridor, which runs right up the city. You can also spot Rouge Park by the absence of travel patterns in this area.

The use of census tracts for geographic areas plotted on the map does simplify the patterns a bit, but by foregrounding the obvious travel tendencies of commuters, a picture of the city as a series of transportation hubs emerges. Let us know what interesting stuff you spot in the comments. For a bigger version of the map, go here.

This is what it's like on board a Redpath sugar ship

toronto sugar shipWinter is officially over, at least according to the Toronto Port Authority. The first ocean vessel of the 2015 shipping season, the M/V Tundra out of Limassol, Cyprus, arrived in the harbour Monday, carrying with it roughly 19,500 tonnes of raw sugar from Santos, Brazil.

For being in charge of the first ship since the melting of the winter ice, Captain Volodymyr Ovidiyenko was presented with an 154-year-old felted beaver skin top hat, a bizarre tradition that dates back centuries.

toronto redpath shipCrafted by Christy's Hats of London some time before 1860, the hat was brought to Toronto by British-born captain John Hooper Meade and presented each year to the first sea captain, or "salty," to land in the Toronto harbour.

The hat used to come with a cash prize, which acted as an incentive to hasten the arrival of important deliveries. As a bonus, the lucky winner was allowed to keep it for 24 hours, but after years of abuse by rowdy sailors on shore leave it was transferred to the PortsToronto archives.

"For me, it's the first time, so thank you," said Ukrainian Ovidiyenko. "It's [my] first time and I'm so pleased."

Here's a look at what the M/V Tundra and all that sugar looks like up close.

toronto sugar shipThe M/V Tundra was built by Weihai Shipyard in Shandong Province, China, in 2009. It's 185 metres from front to back and 23.7 metres wide. During normal service it travels at 13 knots, about 25 km/h. The Tundra's six holds have a combined 15,632.89 cubic metres of bulk cargo space, which today is occupied by lots and lots of sugar, but sometimes hold corn, wheat, or soya beans.

toronto sugar shipThe temporary steps up to the ship's deck are tippy and soaking wet. Only three people are allowed on a time. "I've seen some shit with these stairs," says one of the workers at the bottom.

toronto redpath shipAlthough the Tundra has cranes of its own, Redpath performs the unloading Toronto. It will take about three days to completely empty the ship of its cargo. The last of the sugar should be in the factory by midnight tonight.

toronto sugar shipThe raw, unprocessed sugar is shipped inside covered containers during the ocean voyage. In port, the Redpath cranes reach inside and scoop it out with the help of a smaller digger. The gigantic proportions inside the hold play tricks on your eyes.

toronto sugar shipDespite the massive "no smoking" sign painted on the outside of the ship, the Tundra actually has a smoking room for its mostly Ukrainian crew. When I poke my head inside, a chef is sitting with a cup of coffee watching DVDs.

toronto redpath shipThe bright green Redpath cranes deposit the sweet cane sugar into a massive hopper. Conveyor belts move the product around the facility prior to refining.

toronto redpath shipImmediately inside the Tundra there's a control room dedicated to managing ballast. Storing ocean water in tanks deep within the bowels of the ship ensures the propellor and rudder stay submerged even when the hold is empty and the Tundra is more buoyant. The poster warns against accidentally sucking in marine life when drawing in ballast.

toronto redpath shipLike Pearson, the Toronto waterfront is a port of entry into Canada. Drugs are not tolerated.

toronto redpath shipThis barometer keeps track of atmospheric pressure. Sudden changes indicate wild weather ahead. "During this voyage I had to change course to avoid some storms. I lost maybe 50 miles, but I avoided the storm," says Captain Ovidiyenko. This, of course, is an antique. Ovidiyenko uses sophisticated satellite and radar information on the control deck when making navigation decisions.

toronto redpath shipThe ship might only be six years old, but it has plenty of analogue technology on board in case of a technical failure. This is the Tundra's compass.

toronto redpath shipThere are two seats on the bridge and a dizzying array of screens and buttons. It took about 20 days to make the journey up from Brazil, Captain Ovidiyenko says. "It was a different temperature. 40 degrees in Santos and here at the entrance to the St. Lawrence was -10." After unloading in Toronto, Ovidiyenko will return to Ukraine, but the ship will continue to Thunder Bay and Hamilton to fill up with wheat. After that, it's on to San Juan in Costa Rica.

toronto redpath shipIn total, there are 93 flags in the Tundra's inventory, covering 92 countries. Today, the flag of Canfornav, the Tundra's chartering company, is flying on the main deck.

toronto sugar shipThis lever controls the main engine, a Korean-made STX Man B&W. The giant power unit produces about 9,655 brake horsepower. A typical car engine generates less than 200 BHP, for comparison. The fuel tanks aboard the Tundra hold 1,633.7 cubic metres of diesel.

toronto sugar shipThough the control deck has large forward windows with panoramic views of the deck, visibility in other directions is limited. A periscope with built in compass helps Captain Ovidiyenko keep track of his surroundings.

toronto sugar shipThis wheel steers the M/V Tundra when it's at sea. At low speeds and in the tight confines of the Toronto harbour, tugs controlled by a skilled pilot take control, guiding the ship safely into its waterfront slip.

The M/V Tundra is due to be towed out of the Redpath refinery and out onto the lake in the early hours of tomorrow morning. It might not return for several months.

cavalia torontoCavalia Odysseo has returned to Toronto setting up under the can't-miss massive white tents at Cherry St. and Lakeshore Boulevard. The touring production, an equestrian-lover's dream, is back in Toronto for another season and last night opened its current run with its 800th performance.

Nearly 2,300 spectators braved the wet and muddy conditions to pack the White Big Top to take in the elaborate set design and choreography featuring more than 70 horses, acrobats and musical performances. It's a sight to behold even if just for the how-did-they-do that flips, jumps and other super-human body contortions.

Will Smith & Suicide Squad cast now filming in Toronto

suicide squad torontoJust a few days after Jared Leto generated a whole whack of buzz with his arrival in Toronto to film DC Comics blockbuster Suicide Squad the rest of the cast felt it necessary to snatch the spotlight for themselves. Director David Ayer tweeted a photo of Will Smith et al doing a read through of the script as filming gets underway.

Leto is notably absent, presumably because he's hard at work perfecting his take on the Joker, which has been the subject of much curiosity since he started teasing hints of what might be in store. Or perhaps he's the one taking the photo. What a good sport!

In any case, if you're a Will Smith or Jared Leto fan, now's the time to develop your stalking strategy. They'll probably spend a significant chunk of their time on a soundstage while filming, but there's also a rumour that some scenes will be shot by the waterfront. Stay tuned.

International reaction to TSO's decision to turf pianist

Valentina Lisitsa torontoThe controversy over the TSO cancelling the Toronto performance of Ukrainian pianist Valentina Lisitsa - classical music's Justin Bieber, according to the BBC - over social media posts of hers deemed anti-Kyiv, is no longer local.

Newspapers and media outlets worldwide have picked up the story about turfed musician, who will be paid, but not allowed to perform. The New York Times has collected many of the perceived offensive tweets Lisitsa has sent over the last year or so from her account.

While not many other big players have commented thus far, international coverage is as far reaching slavyangrad.org, WQXR (New York), In the Now (Moscow), deutsche-wirtschafts-nachrichten.de (Germany), and Sputnik, and Spanish site codalario.com. Canadian publications on the story include Macleans, The Globe, the CBC and the Huffington Post.

The Toronto Star is now reporting that Lisitsa's replacement, Stewart Goodyear, has backed out due to "mob-like behavior of [Lisitsa's] devotees." Bieber-mania indeed.

Drake video game now available for the iPhone

Drake video game"I was runnin' through the 6 with my woes" might ultimately prove to be the most famous Drake lyric of all time. It's the quintessential combination of the rapper's desire to rep Toronto while also feeling sad. It is now also a major component of a new video game for the iPhone.

Runnin Through the 6 involves chasing after little 6 icons to the tune of "Know Yourself" all while trying desperately to avoid wheelchairs, which signify a dreaded return to the Degrassi days. The graphics are basic, but the premise is rather clever, and it's a surprisingly entertaining time waster.

Rob Ford Bad BoysRob Ford might be taking a break to take care of his health but in the lead up to his May 11th operation he isn't shying away from the limelight. In new print ads that first appeared yesterday in the Toronto Star, our former Mayor is seen promoting Bad Boy Furniture including reclining on what looks like a leather La-Z-Boy and posing with store management.

No word yet if this will translate to a paid gig for Ford although CEO Blayne Lastman told Metro that the opportunity came about when Ford came into the store to buy some furniture.

Lastman told Metro "He negotiated a great deal...and after it was over, my general manager asked him if we could use (the photos) in an ad and he said, 'No problem.'"

Does Rob Ford's star turn in an ad for Bad Boy Furniture make you want to immediately run out to score a leather loveseat? Let us know in the comments.
