With a huge selection of graphic novels available - alongside festival-branded merch, comic book franchise swag, unusual stationery and notebooks - it's the next best thing to browsing the tables at TCAF.

Last remains of sleaze are wiped from Broadview Hotel

$

toronto broadview hotelIt won't be long before the New Broadview Hotel at Queen and Broadview has shed the last signs of its sleazy history. Workers are in the process of cleaning up the exterior of the 124-year-old building as part of ongoing work to turn the former strip club into a boutique hotel, restaurant, and coffee shop.

The interior of the building has been stripped back to the bare brick walls while Streetcar Developments adds additional floors. When it's finished, there will be six floors in the main building (up from the original four) and a rooftop terrace. The turret at the corner of Queen and Broadview will be converted into an "executive suite," according to planning documents.

Streetcar is also planning to restore the metal windowsills, exterior flashing, cornices, and add a green roof to the building. The rear extension, which at time of writing still carries a black and white sign promising "the best party in town," is due to sprout additional floors and be host a cafe on the ground level.

On the outside, the old metal fire escape on the Broadview side of the building are in the process of being removed in favour of more discreet (and probably safer) internal egress routes.

toronto broadview hotelThough the building has been used as a hotel for more than a century, it was originally constructed by soap magnate Archibald Dingman to house offices. In 1907, "Dingman's Hall" was reconfigured to accommodate sleeping quarters on the upper floors, but by the 80s it had become known as a strip club--"Maxi's Lounge" in 1981 and "Kicker's" in 1983. Streetcar bought the dilapidated building in 2014.

On Queen St., the recent arrival of scaffolding suggests imminent changes, but for now the darkened Jilly's sign still clings to the exterior.

The Best Event Venues in Toronto

$
0
0

event venues torontoThe best event venues in Toronto are, by and large, sprawling, gleaming spaces that either play to the city's historical strengths or offer a taste of cutting-edge architecture and design. This city has plenty of spots perfect for intimate, cozy soirees, but when you're dealing with an amped-up guest list (and/or budget), it's time to haul in the big guns. Are you after industrial details or pristine white walls? A patio or a dance floor? Space for 100 or 1,000? No sweat.

Here are the best event venues in Toronto.

Evergreen Brick Works
A lush, unusual setting in the Don Valley, historical structures, and a strong focus on eco-friendly practices sets this brick quarry-turned-event venue apart from the city's blank boxes and banquet halls. In addition to multiple large event spaces (indoor and outdoor), the Brick Works also feature lovely gardens and some beautiful views of the surrounding parkland.

Artscape Wychwood Barns
Once a TTC streetcar holding facility, this concrete-lined space off St. Clair West is the go-to for industrial cool. As with the other Artscape properties, it's a stomping ground for art groups and not-for-profits, with artists' studios hosted on-site, but the long, narrow covered barns space is also often used for banquets and weddings.

The Berkeley Church
Nothing says "striking event space" quite like 17-foot stained-glass windows. The Berkeley Church, a former house of worship built in 1871, also boasts a gorgeous ballroom with a large upper mezzanine area, and more intimate event rooms like the downstairs "wine cellar". Weddings might seem like an obvious fit, but the marvelous acoustics also make it a draw for marquee musical performances.

The Carlu
After years of neglect, the grand dame of Toronto event venues, which once hosted performances from the likes of Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra, reopened in 2003. The '30s concert hall, now restored to its former glory, is the city's go-to spot for glittering galas, dinners and awards ceremonies.

Royal Conservatory of Music
This Bloor St. performance and everts centre (revamped as the TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning) carries a strong musical thread throughout, reflected in the multiple performance-ready spaces, the decor, and the acoustic properties of its rooms. The centrepiece of the facility is Koerner Hall, a vast glass-windowed space topped with a unique floating, wood-ribboned ceiling.

The Burroughes Building
Those in search of an edgy, loftlike vibe and a Queen West address will love this historic six-floor structure, built in 1907 as a furniture department store. Since reopening as an event space in 2006, with a third-floor gallery space and rooftop terrace available for rent, it's become a popular draw for photo shoots, art exhibitions, fashion shows, and blowout bashes.

2nd Floor Events
This brick-and-beam space off King West is a newcomer on the Toronto events scene, pulling in late-night bashes (facilitated by the sizeable bar anchoring one wall of the space) as well as weddings, corporate events, and a few quirkier occupants like the Midnight MRKT.

Artscape Youngplace
Tucked onto a quiet stretch of Shaw just north of Queen St., this stately converted school (built in 1914) is home to several white-walled studios that can be set up to suit exhibits, performances, parties or meetings, as well as the sprawling Koffler Centre of the Arts, which boasts 4,600 square feet of gallery space.

Daniels Spectrum
This community hub, a joint project between Toronto Community Housing, Daniels Corp. and Artscape, is grounded by a network of event spaces connected by hallway galleries. The largest, the cavernous Ada Slaight Hall, is a popular choice for galas and fashion shows, and features a retractable 300-seat bleacher system for lectures and performances.

Andrew Richard Designs (2nd Floor)
A true blank slate, Andrew Richard Designs' event venue (located above the King East patio furniture shop) is a white-walled, white-floored, large-windowed space often called upon for business events and product launches. Weddings and evening parties are also common - with a space this wide-open, the possibilities are endless.

Airship 37
This new-ish events facility has a lot going for it: A location near the picturesque Distillery District, two internal spaces (the intimate Gooderham Lounge and industrial Hangar) totalling 4,500 square feet, and a charming outdoor deck area perfect for summer events.

99 Sudbury
Located just off West Queen West, 99 Sudbury is home to a restaurant and a gym - but it's best known as a large, malleable events complex, featuring white walls, high ceilings, and plenty of room to move. For more natural light, check out the Glass Factory, or opt for the 99 Gallery for a sleek, after-hours vibe.

The annual midge orgy has returned to Toronto

$

0

midges torontoToronto is once again the backdrop to a giant sex party involving millions of tiny hovering bugs. Every Spring and Fall, sometimes up to four times a year, countless numbers of chironomids ("midges" to you and me) drift through the city in search of a mate, meaning that for the next few disgusting days every drink and open mouth in the city is at risk of invasion.

The densely packed clouds that often gather in shafts of sunlight or close to bright lights are actually sexually active females trying to entice obliging males to engage in coitus. The creatures normally like to hang around the waterfront, but onshore winds often drive them inland in massive swarms of up to 4,000 bugs per square metre.

Happily for Toronto's humans, the infestation is due to die down in the next week or so. Until then, the best way to steer the little creeps away is to set up a bright distraction lamp on your balcony, deck, or porch, says Ontario Science Centre expert David Sugarman.

Black Hoof and Arcade Fire to open Montreal restaurant

black hood montrealToronto's Jen Agg and Roland Jean of The Black Hoof and Rhum Corner are teaming up with Win Butler and Régine Chassagne of Arcade Fire to open a new Haitian street food bar in Montreal on Rue Amherst in the Village.

The Globe and Mail reports that the collaboration between the restaurateurs, artists and musicians is to be "more of an art project" and a cultural hub for the nearly 200,000 Haitians living in Montreal than just a trendy eatery.

Expect the new restaurant's offerings to differ slightly from those at Rhum Corner, but the focus on the menu is still very much on authentic Haitian flavours. The restaurant is expected to open in the summer.

Local restaurateurs setting up shop in other cities isn't a new trend. Check out this post for a round-up of other Toronto restaurants with outposts elsewhere in Canada and around the world.

Fort York bridge demolition hints at Gardiner's future

$

toronto fort york bridgeFor more than 160 years, a bridge has crossed a deep man-made trench south of Fort York. The railway cut, carved east to west near the foot of Bathurst St., once carried track belonging to the Grand Trunk Railway to a maintenance facility on the waterfront. Later, the line served the Canada Malting silos and Loblaws warehouse, located on opposite sides of Lake Shore Blvd.

Since 1990, however, the 366-metre gouge out of the earth has lain empty--a relic of the waterfront's industrial past.

Until a few weeks ago, the only conspicuous evidence the tracks ever existed was a Gardiner Expressway-era bridge that carried Fort York road traffic over the vacant trench. As part of ongoing improvements to the historic former military site, the steel structure was recently demolished, bringing to a close more than a century and a half of history.

For the first time since 1854, there is no structure carrying traffic over the former route of the GTR railway.

toronto fort york bridgeThe first crossing was made entirely of wood. It was 27 metres long and could carry 8 tons on its deck, writes David Spittal in the Fife and Drum, the newsletter of the Friends of Fort York. The bridge was located near the present site of the new Fort York Visitor Centre and was for a time the only access point to the military grounds.

A second bridge that carried the streetcars of the Toronto Railway Company was added in 1916, but the original wooden structure lingered until the 1950s, when it was replaced by what would be a short-lived steel and timber arrangement.

The Gardiner Expressway was built directly over the railway trench in 1960, reaching its highest elevation as it passed Fort York. The highway had to be built unusually tall through the area in order to accommodate a new bridge that was constructed to carry Garrison Rd. over the formidable slopes of the railway corridor.

toronto fort york bridgeUntil a few weeks ago, the Gardiner-era bridge was still in service. Now, it's in ruins--smashed into piles of concrete and rebar. For the first time in more than a century and a half, there's no bridge providing road access to Fort York.

Instead, material excavated during construction of the visitor centre will be used to fill in part of the old trench and create a permanent level crossing. As an added bonus, Fort York will acquire an additional acre of space along its southern edge.

Perhaps in the next few decades the rest of the Gardiner will come down too.

PANAMANIA torontoThis summer the Pan Am Games are taking over Toronto with PANAMANIA. While the event is focused on sports, there's a whole lot else going on too. During the Games, Toronto will play host to over 1,300 artists and 250 exhibitions for a 35 day arts and culture celebration.

Needless to say, there will be no shortage of things to do in the city come July.

Mark your calendars as a number of free concerts have been scheduled. The Flaming Lips, Chromeo, Janelle Monae, Polaris Prize winner Tanya Tagaq, and Death from Above 1979 are all slated to perform at Nathan Phillips Square, while Lights and Dragonette will be performing on the Exhibition Place grounds.

Aside from these big ticket performers, the fest also showcases theatre, dance, visual arts, comedy, and fashion. Some events are free while others are ticketed, so plan accordingly. Tickets and additional information can be pursued on the PANAMANIA website.

Rob Ford sings in new music video to fight cancer

Rob Ford singsRob Ford hasn't completely lost his knack for making headlines, not all of which are of the controversial kind. The latest out of Ford County is that Toronto's former mayor helped record an anti-cancer anthem with a series of independent artists from Toronto. Titled "Not My Time," the effort was posted online yesterday.

As for Ford's singing voice, you don't really get to hear much of it. He doesn't make an appearance until the very end of the song, when he offers the chorus line "it's not my time."

The song is set to be released on June 22. Proceeds from digital purchases will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society and the RACA.

Toronto designers create ballsiest bike light around

$

bike balls torontoBike lights might not be particularly sexy from a design standpoint, but given the important role they play in rider safety, there's no reason why they don't deserve a little love. Enter Scott Bodaly and Heather Lam (the folks behind the National Design Collective). They've created what is, in their words, "the world's most overconfident bike light."

Yes, it looks like balls. But that's the genius of the invention. As the light bobs back and forth, it's far more visible than a static-mounted version. As for the inspiration, the product's Kickstarter explains that "it takes grit, wit, and huge balls to ride in the city so show 'em what you got!"

Over and above the cachet of the design, the extra surface area of light that get from the way that the LED is encased in a silicone shell rather than conveyed as a pinpoint makes this a product that's very much safety-focused. The more light there is, the safer you are. Who knew that an illuminated set of facsimile testicles could be so useful?

vegan pizza torontoToronto is about to get its first vegan pizzeria and snack bar. Apiecalypse Now! recently closed on Markham and is relocating and revamping as a vegan pizzeria and snack bar at the address formerly home to La Burrita across from Christie Pits.

You'll find the new pizzeria and snack bar open sporadically in advance of the grand opening slated for the end of this month. In addition to the snack bar, a licensed dining room/event space/bar on the second floor is currently in the works for later this summer.

Whole pies as well as slices will be on the menu, along with popular park-friendly concessions including baked goods, vegan soft serve, milkshakes, cotton candy and doughnuts. As if that's not enough, the place will also host a vegan sandwich start-up called Grains Grains Grains.

Meanwhile the old bakeshop on Markham might be up for grabs come September. Until then it'll be used as a community kitchen and incubator for vegan food businesses and start-ups.

Are you excited for Toronto's first vegan pizzeria and snack bar? Let us know in the comments.

Condo of the week: 390 Cherry Street

Gooderham CondosThe three bedroom unit at 390 Cherry Street in the newly built Gooderham Condominiums, is listed for $1,249,000. Located in the Distillery District, this shiny glass 35-storey tower is plunked down in the midst of preserved warehouses, along the historic brick-lined streets.

The condo was built just last year so it's brand spanking new, and the oversized unit has never been lived in. The tower and its adjacent glass twin (another new 40-storey high-rise) are slowly giving way to modern architecture in the area.

While amenities are large in this new condo (rooftop terrace, yoga room and home theatre), the main attraction is the neighbourhood. The Distillery is always a lively and high traffic area with breweries, beer tastings, chocolate shops, art galleries and seasonal events like the annual Christmas Market.

Come the summer, the Distillery will serve as a main stomping ground for the 2015 Pan Am Games. Parking in the area will be limited (or non-existent), thankfully this suite includes two underground spots. Take a look what a $1.2 million condo looks like in the historic Distillery District.

Gooderham CondosGOOD FOR

Outdoor entertaining. Living in a high-rise can make you feel disconnected to the outdoors. In this unit, outdoor space is not an issue with three walkouts and a 1,000 square foot terrace. The massive patio is the ultimate summer hideaway and barbecue destination.

Gooderham CondosMOVE ON IF

You detest large concrete pillars. Pillars, ugly as they may be, are a structural necessity in a building. This unit features multiple ones and luckily, they are mostly out of view.
