Sudden downpour triggers flash floods in Toronto

0
0

toronto floodToronto city council's Gardiner East debate must have angered the gods. A sudden, torrential downpour combined with powerful winds and hail struck during the afternoon commute, causing numerous flash floods across the city.

Shortly after 6 p.m., a powerful line of storms passed over Toronto, flooding roads, underpasses, and parking lots. Although the rain was intense at times, it was short lived. Still, there were reports of flash floods and downed trees. Museum station was briefly closed and there were problems on the 501 Queen, 505 Dundas, and 506 Carlton streetcars.

A couple of small outages in southwestern Scarborough, Yonge and Dundas, and Ossington and Bathurst between College and St. Clair area are listed on Toronto Hydro's outage map. Up to 600 buildings may be affected, though no official number has been posted yet.

Here's what the wild ride looked like on social media.

MEC is closing its store at King and Spadina

mec torontoMEC (or Mountain Equipment Co-Op) is leaving King West. While the long-time retailer won't depart until 2017, plans are already in place to move the location almost directly north to Queen St. at a site that's currently home to an eyesore of a parking lot at Soho St.

Well known for its green roof, MEC has occupied its King West location since 1998. There had been rumours of a move to Queen West for a while, which the company finally confirmed today. The initial word is that the new location will be similar in size to the current King West store, at two storeys with an underground parking space.

The King West location will remain open during the move, so don't fret about access to backpacks, bike pumps, and hiking boots. There's no word on what the plans are for the interior of the new location, but one would imagine it'll be outfitted with a climbing wall and other interesting touches.

388 Richmond Street WestIn Toronto's Fashion District, $899,900 buys you a two-plus-den with a killer view of the CN Tower. The seventh floor unit at 388 Richmond Street West in the District Loft building is located in the heart of downtown, attracting the young professional who works hard, plays hard and enjoys the night life of this lively neighbourhood.

Take into account it's an older building (built in 2001) and offers few amenities other than a fitness studio.

Controversial men's rights group banned from Pride

CAFE PrideControversial men's rights group the Canadian Association for Equality's (CAFE) has been barred from marching in the 2015 Pride Parade. After numerous complaints about the groups intention to participate, Pride Toronto sent the matter to its Dispute Resolution Process, which ultimately resulted in the group's permit to march being revoked.

This is what the leader of the DRP had to say.

"Given the number of complaints received in regards to the Canadian Association for Equality's (CAFE) intention to participate in the Pride Parade, after careful consideration, I have decided it would be appropriate for Pride Toronto to revoke CAFE's permit to be included in the Pride Parade this year.

My decision is based on balancing of interests: I considered CAFE's response that inclusion, diversity and equality are values the organization shares with Pride versus the numerous complaints filed against CAFE's participation arguing that CAFE, as an organization and through its affiliation with men's rights groups, contravenes Pride Toronto's vision to, "create a safe space to engage communities in the celebration of their sexuality.

I must give the complaints of members of the LGBTTIQQ2SA community precedence when
they indicate the participation of CAFE could directly undermine the participation of queer,
lesbian and trans women in the Pride Parade. Consequently, I determined that the Pride Parade is not the right venue for CAFE given Pride Toronto's vision to create a safe space for people of all genders and sexual orientation."

CAFE was also banned from last year's parade, though they managed to march nonetheless via affiliation with the Sherbourne Health Centre. The group is the first to have been barred from the parade via a formal DRP process.

Crate TorontoTaking over the semi-subterranean space previously occupied by Rakia Bar, this new cafe transitions into a tapas bar come evening time. With great drinks, tasty economical eats (no food item exceeds $9) like an elevated Reuben sandwich and Korean short ribs, plus a patio, this place should prove to be a popular hangout this summer.

Toronto votes for hybrid option on East Gardiner

0
0

gardiner expressway hybridToronto will not completely tear down the East Gardiner, after a tight 24-21 vote at city council in favour of the hybrid approach this afternoon. This was the approach that Mayor John Tory endorsed, and he managed to whip enough votes together to bring council along with him.

This option, which comes in at over $900 million, rebuilds much of the eastern section of the expressway and adds off-ramps near Cherry Street. The other primary option on the table, and the one favoured by downtown Toronto councillors, was to remove the eastern portion of the elevated expressway and replace it with a boulevard.

gardiner expresswayAdvocates of this strategy touted it as a way to open up the city's access to the eastern waterfront, an area that's currently experiencing tons of development. But, ultimately Toronto opted for the conservative approach, which really isn't too surprising given our track record on bold urban thinking.

smokes poutinerieSmoke's Poutinerie is getting into the burrito business. Founder Ryan Smolkin unveiled today the chain plans to roll out a new concept called Smoke's Burritories. It's just the latest initiative in the company's ambitious expansion plans which also include a chain of hot dog joints and a push to open as many as 1,300 new restaurants around the world by 2020.

What is now arguably the world's most successful poutine operation has come along way since it opened its first Smoke's way back in 2008. For years the company operated out of cramped office space across from Filmore's Strip club before relocating to its now global headquarters in Ajax.

Aside from being a favourite Toronto late night eats option, Smoke's has also gained visibility from its popular World Poutine Eating Championships that it first hosted in 2010 and staged to growing audiences in everyyear since (no event has been announced for 2015.)

Now it's taking its show on the road and has already opened a Smoke's Poutinerie location in Berkeley, California with Las Vegas, LA, Europe, Australia and the Middle East to come.

Will Smoke's Poutinerie be Canada's most successful global restaurant chain ever? Let us know in the comments.

The top 15 events at Ontario Craft Beer Week 2015

0
0

ontario craft beer weekOntario Craft Beer Week kicks off today for the sixth tribute to the great beers made by the Ontario Craft Brewers member organization. There are hundreds of events occurring across the province, but as you can imagine, all the good events are being held in Toronto because obviously.

As with previous years, OCB Week is something of a double-edged sword: It's the excellent excuse you've been looking for to drink every night for a week, but it's also overwhelming how many bloody options there are to get your craft beer fix. Thankfully, you have me to steer you toward the good ones. Just think of me as your tipsy goodwill ambassador.

Here are my picks for the top events at OCB Week this year.

Various times

LCBO craft beer tastings
The LCBO gets in on the craft beer week fun with a variety of brewery-specific tastings over the course of the week, featuring beers like Wellington Brewery, Beau's, Railway City, Muskoka, Great Lakes, and many more.

Friday June 12

Lake of Bays Tap Takeover at The Roncy Public
6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
We don't really get a chance to try most of Muskoka's Lake of Bays Brewery's lineup here in Toronto and, to be honest, craft beer fans don't get a lot of the good stuff in Roncesvalles, so this is a great opportunity on both fronts. Try Crosswind Pale Ale, Rock Cut Baysville Lager, Spark House Red Ale, and 10 Point IPA.

Griffin Session Toronto
11am-9pm
For better or for worse, Session Toronto is THE event of OCB Week these days. What was once the unofficial piss-up at the end of the week for industry folks is now a no-holds-barred shindig at Yonge and Dundas Square that sees dozens of breweries shamelessly pairing up with celebrities for a shot at an LCBO listing.

Corner Block Party
11am-5pm
When you think of the Irish, you think of BBQ and Ontario craft beer, and that's why The Corner House Irish Pub will be hosting a BBQ tonight serving unique offerings from Wellington Brewery, Black Oak Brewing Co, and Sawdust City Brewing Co. Sláinte, bitches.

Sunday June 14

Collingwood Brewery presents: RunTOBeer at Tequila Bookworm
For some reason, there is a growing number of people who like to combine running with drinking beer. While I'm personally more of a "walk slowly to beer" kind of dude, Toronto's craft beer running club, RunTOBeer, is leading the charge in runs followed by "recovery" beers.

Beau's + Beast Beer Dinner

Beer Writer pro tip: I've learned that you can usually tell the awesomeness of a beer dinner by the ranking of the representatives the brewery sends to attend. If you see that the "Sales and Community Manager Guy" is hosting the dinner, take a pass. If you see that Beau's All Natural Co-founder Steve Beauchesne and Brew Master Matt O'Hara are attending, sign the eff up.

Tuesday June 16

Vinyl Nite
9pm
If you haven't been to the Monarch Tavern lately well...actually it's pretty much the same as it always has been--except these days there's good beer on tap. Go see for yourself on Tuesday when they bust out old records and spin entire sides. As a bonus, there are cheap pints of Beau's Lug Tread ($4) to be had. It's a night so cool they had to misspell night to convey its epic coolness.

Great Lakes Brewery and Left Field Brewery Beer Dinner at Morgan's
6:30pm
I'm a sucker for a beer dinner and this one, hosted by two of Toronto's best breweries, seems slated to be a good one. Hosted by Left Field's co-founders Mark and Mandie Murphy along with Great Lake's Sales and Community Manager Guy Troy Burtch, this event will see four courses prepared by Chopped Canada winner Chef Anne Sorenti paired with GLB and LFB mainstays as well as some rarities from the cellar. $59.99

Wednesday June 17

Brews and Balls
8pm
It's not often that craft beer is paid with pinball, but it's clearly awesome so this has all the makings of becoming an official thing. On Wednesday, Ottawa's Big Rig Brewery takes over the taps at Junction City Music Hall, who will put out a selection of pinball machines. You had me at balls! Wait...

Hopped up Hump Day Beer Dinner
5:30
Cafe Belong will welcome Muskoka Brewery President Gary McMullen as he hosts a five course meal paired with his company's beers. Gary's flagship beer, Muskoka Cream Ale just celebrated its 19th birthday. The guys knows a lot about beer and is a hell of a nice guy to boot. Eat dinner with him, already! $65.

Nickel Brook Tap Takeover at Thirsty and Miserable
Nickel Brook's beers are awesome and Thirsty and Miserable, Kensington's most awesome bar, will be devoting all eight of their taps to Nickel Brook Wednesday. Do you really need more information?

Thursday June 18

The Ladies Pub Strut
5:30pm start
In an industry largely dominated by dudes, it's important to celebrate the fantastic ladies gettin' er done in craft beer. Hit up this women-only craft beer pub crawl and raise a glass (or seven) to the women of Ontario craft beer by visiting bars that are all owned by women. You'll hit Sauce, Brass Taps, Louis Cifer, Das Gasthaus, The Old Nick, and The Auld Spot.

Untapped Brewmaster's Dinner at the Mill Street Brew Pub
6:30pm
There are few people making beer in Ontario who are as clearly passionate about making beer as Mill Street's Joel Manning. The guy simple digs beer and it's obvious. Accordingly, the dinners he hosts at Mill Street's brew pub are reliably great. If you've never been to one, go to this five course meal for $69.99. Go on, go!

Out in Left Field Beer Dinner
6:45pm
You can't actually get a local craft beer at the Rogers Centre (making it the only stadium in the majors to have that distinction). Thankfully the persistent buggers at Left Field Brewery actually landed the Renaissance Downtown Toronto Hotel in the Rogers Centre as an account and are hosting a beer dinner overlooking left field at the Jays-Mets game Thursday. Hoist a few over a $60, four-course meal and rage at the powers at be (quietly though, it's a restaurant after all).

Friday June 19

The Beach BBQ and Brews Festival
Friday 3pm - Sunday 8pm
A family friendly and free event at Woodbine Park that features live music, rides for the kids, grilling demonstrations, and, a bunch of beer from brewers like Left Field, Sawdust City, Great Lakes, and Silversmith. It's fathers day weekend so toast your dad/kids/the fact that you don't have a dad/kids!

What did I miss? Add the events you're most excited about in the comments.

Toronto condo vacancies at all time high

Condo vacancies torontoToronto condo vacancies surged in the month of May, with more than 2,800 completed units unoccupied. That number hovered just above 2,000 in April. Economists from National Bank Financial, authors of the report, urged that a single month doesn't represent a trend, but those numbers are certainly worth keeping tabs on.

Not wanting to sound any alarm bells makes sense, I suppose, but it's not as if May was the first month in which condo vacancies were high enough to warrant attention. Back in March, Toronto reached a 21 year high in unsold condos. That said, prices are still soaring, so it's difficult to predict how exactly this will play out over the rest of the summer.
