LeBron James endorsed pizza chain coming to Toronto

blaze pizza torontoBasketball star LeBron James is associated with a soon to open restaurant that'll be slinging fast and gourmet pizza in Toronto. Blaze Pizza, which currently has dozens of locations south of the border, will soon open up in the old Johnny Rocket's space at Yonge Dundas Square.

This will be Canada's first location of the pizza chain - a second one is schedule to open in Calgary this year. While an official opening date for either has yet to be announced, the franchise is part of a wave of pizza places promising to cook your pie in three minutes or less.

The menu features the usual range of options as well as gluten, dairy-free and seafood options. Beer, wine and a s'more pies for dessert are also in the mix.

LeBron James? Don't expect him to be layering pepperoni slices in Toronto anytime soon. He's actually the franchisee of ten Blaze Pizza locations in Florida. His endorsement of the fast growing franchise has created buzz in the States but it remains to be seen whether the company's marketing and PR machine will leverage his involvement when the Toronto location opens.

Drake's long weekend in Toronto as seen on Instagram

0

drakeWhile you were lazily enjoying your August long weekend at the cottage or on stay-cation in the city, Drake brought out some of the biggest names in hip hop to his beloved 6ix. And, after three nights of shows, including performances by J.Cole, Big Sean and stand-up comedian Kevin Hart, Drake headlined the grand finale of his sixth annual OVO Fest at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre last night.

Yes, that's Drake having a laugh with Kanye West and Will Smith. Although Smith didn't perform, Kanye was one of this year's surprise guests. Clearly he's moved on from last week's Pan Am mic mishap. Other special guests included Pharrell, Travis Scott, Future and Skepta.

Norm Kelly was the obvious hole in that guest list. While the Ward 40 councillor didn't exactly grace the Amphitheatre stage, Drake rapped against a backdrop in his likeness. It appeared during "Back to Back," one of the diss tracks Drizzy put out during his ongoing feud with Meek Mill.

Drake performedthe entire song over a slideshow of Meek Mill memes. He even wore a Free Meek Mill shirt during rehearsal. Despite reports indicating that the Toronto rapper is releasing yet another diss track ("3 Peat") it might be time to put this tiff to bed.

Here's a round-up of Drake's long weekend as seen on Instagram.

Was your weekend better than Drake's? Let us know in the comments.

Drake and Raptors unveil new team uniforms

toronto raptorsAlong with being a Canadian hero, Drake is also the Toronto Raptors' global ambassador. It's fitting then that the rapper helped unveil the Raptors' new uniforms at OVO Fest last night.

The uniforms come in four varieties, including an OVO-branded set in black and gold. The new logo, which debuted last December to mixed reviews, is placed prominently on the shorts, along with a small maple leaf.

The slogan "We The North," is featured at the bottom of the jerseys. The uniforms also include a new font ("We The Letters") and the players' names will be arranged in an arc rather than in a straight line.

toronto raptorsThese uniforms are part of the team's rebrand, which emphasizes the Raptors as Canada's only NBA team. The primary home jerseys, for instance, are red and white in an obvious nod to the Canadian flag. However, the black-and-gold version, which Drake rocked last night, is the highlight here as the Raptors' We The North makeover continues to unfold.

What do you think of the new uniforms? Let us know in the comments.

Second Cup to continue makeover of its Toronto cafes

0

second cupLast December, Second Cup surprised passers-by with a snazzy new store at King and John. Gone were the dark countertops and flavoured drip coffee; instead, exposed brick, white marble and a sci-fi-esque steampunk brewer greeted customers.

According to a Canadian Press report, the company's second quarter sales were still down 4.6 percent in comparison to last year. However, Second Cup says its new King West cafe is "continuing to exceed expectations."

Recently, Second Cup revamped its Eaton Centre location (it's right by the entrance to Dundas Station). It also opened a "cafe of the future" in Montreal. These upscale and easily Instagrammable stores are certainly pretty, and it'll be interesting to see whether they can keep Second Cup afloat in a competitive coffee market.

What do you think of Second Cup's makeover? Let us know in the comments.

Toronto Police launch new mobile app

0

toronto policeDid your house get tagged? Maybe someone damaged your car? You don't need to call 9-1-1 for these minor incidents, but now you can now file a report directly to the Toronto Police Service via the new TPS Mobile app.

The app offers safety tips, answers a myriad of questions and helps Torontonians locate police stations and collision centres. It can also notify users of community safety alerts. But, its most useful feature is likely its reporting capabilities.

"It gives the public an opportunity to report crime when it's convenient," said Constable Hugh Ferguson during a press conference this morning, according to the Toronto Star. The Star also noted that Texas company MobilePD developed the TPS app, which is formatted for both iPhones and Androids.

Would you use the Toronto Police Service Mobile app? Let us know in the comments.

The top 10 places to take engagement photos in Toronto

0
0

toronto engagement photosTaking engagement photos in Toronto will have you posing for pictures in some of the city's most scenic spots. Whether you're looking to snap something sentimental by the water or get goofy in graffiti alley, one of these places will help capture memories that will last a lifetime.

Here are my picks for the top places to take engagement photos in Toronto.

The Port Lands
Let's face it, waterfront engagement photos are nothing new. Luckily, Toronto has some options that won't have your pics looking like beach stills from a Shania Twain video. Skip Ashbridge's Bay in favour of Polson Street something a little different (and less sandy).

toronto engagement photosHigh Park
High Park offers endless photo opportunities in its expansive grounds. Take advantage of the of fauna and flora for some nature-infused images. If you go right time of year, you may be able to get some shots under the coveted cherry blossom trees.

On a Ferry
Taking photos on a ferry makes the statement that your relationship is really going places (cheesy, but true). Plus, you'll get the Toronto skyline as your background, which outdoes any average park bench or beach. Hey, if you fell in love in the city, why not show it off in all its glory.

toronto engagement photosEvergreen Brick Works
This former quarry is the ideal place to snap photos with your loved one. The brick laden-back drop will have you and your fiancee taking centre stage. Plus, if you love how your photos worked out, you can always book the venue for your special day.

Graffiti Alley
Looking for the perfect place to snap something truly unique? Try Graffiti Alley. The street art is the perfect backdrop for those who err on the less traditional side of things. A huge plus, you don't have to book the alley or pay any absurd costs to take your pictures. Just show up and get to posing.

toronto engagement photosThe Distillery District
The Distillery District is a tried and true option as far as engagement photos are concerned. The Victorian Industrial Architecture makes for the perfect backdrop and the streets get excellent sun exposure during the day, so you can skip the studio lights.

Guildwood Park
This spot is ideal for those who want to go the traditional photo route. Many a couple has posed in front of the Corinthian columns and embellished archways at Guildwood for good reason: they make for a great image that will stand the test of time.

toronto engagement photosUnder the Gardiner
If you don't want to take the traditional route, skip the ROM and opt for some cost-free pictures under the Gardiner Expressway. You and your beloved are sure to stand out against the predominantly concrete backdrop. Or, if you like something a little more jazzed up, you can head to Underpass Park, which is a lot more colourful due to the newly graffitied pillars.

Spadina Museum
If you want to give your engagement photos a theme, try snapping them at Spadina Museum. The building looks as though it was plucked from an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel and is well-loved for is photogenic grounds. It's the perfect place to don Gatsby-esque attire and show off your love.

toronto engagement photosHumber Bridge
If you're looking for something with a little more architectural oomph, try snapping your engagement pictures on the Humber Bridge. You'll have plenty of backdrop options at this spot: the skyline, the water, or even the bridge itself can be used to amp up your photos.

Toronto's other axe throwing league eyes global expansion

0
0

bad axe throwing leagueAxe throwing may sound like the most stereotypically Canadian pastime. But, it's an activity that's grown in popularity across Toronto due in part to the success of the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL).

Now Toronto's other axe throwing league, Bad Axe Throwing, which already has four locations in the GTA (including one in Toronto), wants to go global and has launched a Kickstarter campaign to get started.

The company hopes to open up 10 new locations over the coming 12 months. It's planning to expand to Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver next. And, it has its eyes set on other Canadian cities as well. Afterwards, its looking to bring the sport south to the United States.

Its Kickstarter campaign has a monetary goal of $40,000 but it's also aiming to raise awareness for urban axe throwing through the crowdfunding site. Backers can pledge anywhere from $5-$5,000 to earn rewards such as toques, axe throwing packages and an adorable baby viking hat and beard.

A visit to one of the existing locations will set you back $44.25, but you can bring your own food and beer to your axe throwing party.

Do you think axe throwing will have global popularity? Let us know in the comments.

Massive development coming to Bathurst & Lake Shore

toronto loblaw warehouseThe historic former Loblaw warehouse at Bathurst and Lake Shore is going to become a massive retail, office, and residential complex, if a planned renovation and expansion project comes to fruition.

Developers are planning to dismantle the historic brick building, which is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act and listed on the City of Toronto's inventory of heritage properties, clean and reassemble it, brick-by-brick. A new structure will be added to the roof and some of the property developed for residential use.

The plans, officially unveiled today, represent a fleshed out version of a proposal that first surfaced in 2013.

toronto loblaw warehouseThe 7-storey Art Deco warehouse opened in 1928 and served as Loblaw's head office as well as its central manufacturing and distribution facility until the 1970s. The Daily Bread food bank used the building until 2000, after which it fell into disuse.

In 2004, Loblaw filed for permission to knock down its former headquarters to make way for a supermarket, but the proposal was rejected by the Ontario Municipal Board.

When the restoration is complete, Loblaw will finally get its long sought-after new store inside the protected portion of the building. It will be modelled after the company's marquee Maple Leaf Gardens location, according to a press release. The new upper levels will be used as office space.

toronto loblaw warehouseConcord Adex, the developer of much of CityPlace, has bought the air rights to the property and plans to put up two condominium towers on the north end of the site south of the Gardiner Expressway. At 41 and 37 storeys, the pair will contain a total of 876 residential units.

The entire project is due to be completed by 2019.

10 great Toronto themed t-shirts you can buy right now

0
0

toronto tshirtToronto themed t-shirts are just further testimony to why our city is so amazing. On top of the nightlife, food, art, festivals, music and thousands of other reasons to love this city, Toronto is also alive with local pride. Torontonians love this place so much they want to wear it literally on their sleeves.

Here's a round-up of some of the top Toronto themed t-shirts you can buy in Toronto right now.

Toronto vs. Everybody
Does this shirt make you want to pound your chest with Toronto pride or what? Although the line might come off as a bit combative, the designers at Peace Collective say "we mean it in the nicest way possible." Get yours for $30 at Peace Collective.com where they donate a month's worth of school meals for one child to the World Food Program for every item sold.

toronto tshirtTuronno
If you pronounce the first long "o" or the second "t" in Toronto, you're probably not from around these parts. The folks at The Button Machine have come up with this Blue Jays-inspired typographic design for those who prefer the local phonology. Get yours for $28.

toronto tshirtThe Neighbourhood Project
With 58 Toronto neighbourhoods represented, this collection of cool typography-based tees will definitely feature your 'hood - even if it's not one of the big guys like High Park or the Danforth. The shirts cost $24.99, and $1 from each shirt sold is donated between Free The Children and Humane Society of Canada.

toronto tshirtWe the North
Even if you've never heard of Kyle Lowry or Jurassic Park, chances are you know about "We the North" - and you have to admit, it's pretty damn civic pride-inducing. You can grab a "We the North" tee from a few different retailers, including Etsy, Real Sports Apparel or nbastore.com, for around $20 or $30.

toronto tshirt1 LOVE T.O.
There's no better way to show off your love for Toronto than this simple design from 1 LOVE T.O. for $25. Join hundreds of proud Torontonians who've snapped a pic of themselves wearing the shirt abroad and you'll get a shout out on the I LOVE T.O. Around the World page.

toronto tshirtHome Is Toronto
Here's the warmer and fuzzier alternative to Peace Collective's Toronto vs. Everybody shirt. Like that one, this $30 Home is Toronto style is all about local civic pride, classically designed and for a good cause.

toronto tshirtHeartbeats T.O.
With a simple heart rate monitor design that gives a nod to the CN tower, this Heartbeats T.O. tee isn't quite so in-your-face as some of the others on this list, but still says "I love my city with all my heart." (Pardon the pun.) You can pick one up for $25 from myheartbeatsto.ca.

toronto tshirtYYZ Luggage Tag
Relive the joys and sorrows of your last great vacation (or your last time on airport pick-up duty?) with the YYZ Luggage Tag tee, by designer Chicanery. This homage to Pearson International is available for $20 from TeePublic.com, an online clothing retailer that showcases designs from independent artists worldwide.

toronto tshirtRed Roctopus
Love it or hate it, the TTC is a huge part of Toronto. It's like the lifeblood running through the veins of our city - connecting neighbourhoods, connecting people. Or, as pictured here, maybe it's a big scary octopus we all have to ride sometimes. Grab your Red Roctopus tee from Etsy retailer Dead Men Design for $20.

toronto tshirtRetro Toronto
Canadian retailer Ole Originals is busting out some fantastic, retro-inspired tees in homage to our country's greatest cities. Maybe we're a bit biased here in the T.O., but the Toronto version ($35) is clearly the best one, no?

The Charlotte Room reopening as the Roxy Bar

Charlotte Room TorontoThe Charlotte Room pool hall at 19 Charlotte Street, near King and Spadina, closed suddenly in May. At the time, it seemed as if hope was lost for the 17-year-old establishment. However it'll soon reopen as the Roxy Bar.

Come tomorrow, August 6, at 4 p.m. the Roxy Bar will open its doors again. Staff have updated the interior and have also refreshed the billiard tables. If pool isn't for you, the bar will feature other activities such as darts and pinball. And, it'll include an expanded menu, meaning you can snack between games.

The Roxy Room plans to host a grand opening event later this month.

Are you happy the Charlotte Room is reopening? Let us know in the comments.
