Slick new seafood spot gives a nod to Captain John's

0

CommodoreA new seafood-centric restaurant has landed in Parkdale and it's serving up oysters, seafood towers, and homey comfort foods like calamari risotto in one of the more stunning rooms you could care to dine in. There's even salvaged lights from Captain John's.

Read my profile of The Commodore in the restaurant section.

Drake and Susur Lee's restaurant Fring's now open

frings torontoFring's, Drake and Susur Lee's much anticipated eatery, has finally opened its doors to the public. Up until now, the whole ordeal has been pretty elusive, with the rare tightly-cropped photo sneaking up on Instagram. Luckily, you can now make your reservation and see the fruits of their labour in real life.

Though Lee, Bent, and Luckee all serve up Asian-influenced fare, Susur has populated the Fring's menu with what could best be described as a combination of tapas and elevated pub food.

This looks like an entourage friendly place, to be sure. You'll find indulgent eats like southern spicy maple fried chicken, mom's homemade sweet & sour meatballs, and the Susur burger served alongside offerings like grilled lamb chops and mushroom pappardelle.

In other words, the menu is kind of all over the place, which will probably work for the scene-inspired crowd sure to flock here.

Vegetarians are not excluded from the action. There's kale Caesars, avocado toast, and a handful more equally exciting plant-based bites. Frings, however, are noticeably absent from the opening menu. As of right now, there's plenty of reservation spots available, but one would expect that to change very soon.

10 almost famous YouTube personalities from Toronto

0
0

famous youtube personalitiesSome of YouTube's famous and almost famous content creators call Toronto home. With some boasting more subscribers and views than Billboard Hot 100 artists, they'll give you more than a few reasons to be proud of the city. Though many have relocated to the platform's epicentre, Los Angeles, you can still spot a landmark or two in the background of their vlogs when they return home.

Here are my picks for the top YouTube channels from Toronto.

LaurDIY
LaurDIY is the go-to channel for all things crafty. Want to fashion the perfect Halloween costume or makeover your space? She's got you covered (and is much more reliable than a Pinterest photo guide). Fair warning, if you subscribe to her channel, you and the salespeople at Michael's will be on a first name basis in no time.

Vanoss Gaming
Evan Fong, the mind behind Vanoss Gaming, has taking YouTube by storm. His subscriber count is higher than Ellen, Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber, and it just keeps growing. It goes without saying that gaming videos are some of the most watched on the site, but his take it to another level, with each upload garnering millions of views.

Gigi Gorgeous
Gigi is known on YouTube as one of the top beauty gurus, sharing her favourite products and pampering tips with her devoted audience. Since relocating to Los Angeles, she's befriended Kylie Jenner, been photographed by Miley Cyrus, appeared on numerous red carpets, and become a full-fledged celeb in her own right.

The Sean Ward Show
The Sean Ward Show is the brainchild of comic and video creator Sean Ward. Some of the channel's most popular videos feature costume clad superheroes battling it out on the streets of downtown Toronto. Spider-Man VS Batman in Toronto shows the Marvel and DC heroes going at it around the city and has garnered more than 10 million views since its upload in 2012.

LaToya Forever
On her main channel, Scarborough native LaToya posts a little bit of everything. Expect to find rants, parodies, comedic skits, challenge videos, tags, and more in her uploads. She also runs a vlogging channel, LaToya's life, where subscribers can keep up with her day to day adventures.

Omar Isuf
Pretty much the antithesis of gaming videos, Omar Isuf encourages subscribers to get off the couch with his fitness videos. You'll find clips on everything from how to perfect your form to muscle anatomy. If you need that extra push to get out of the house and into the gym, spend a few minutes watching his transformation video, and you'll be more than inspired.

RachhLoves
RachhLoves, a beauty vlogger, posts make up tutorials, Pinterest hacks, work out tips, Q&As and more. Her second channel, RachhLovesLife is mainly devoted to baby related videos, but has a few daily vlogs as well. If you're into her channel, she's been known to host meet ups at the Eaton Centre.

Furious Pete
If you're a fan of Man vs. Food - or just food challenges in general - you'll be a fan of Furious Pete. He's a professional competitive eater, so naturally most of his videos focusing on consuming ridiculous amounts of food (i.e.: 147 Bowls of Noodles in 5 Minutes). Peppered in with the eating challenges are a few work out videos, which explain how he's maintained his six pack.

FaZe Rain
Nordan Shat (or FaZe Rain) is a member of the world's most subscribed gaming team, FaZe Clan - so unsurprisingly, his feed is dominated by game-related content. Aside from that he posts prank videos, life updates and Q&As on the channel. He also runs a second channel, OMFGRain, where he uploads vlogs and additional gaming content.

Sylvia Jade
Sylvia Jade is a fashion/beauty/lifestyle vlogger. On her channel, she uploads expertly-edited lookbooks, hauls and morning routines. If you were looking to hop on the pastel hair bandwagon, she's even got a step-by-step guide to get you from dark to bright.

Toronto chocolate maker wins big at world competition

0

soma chocolateToronto's SOMA Chocolatemaker can now say it makes one of the best dark chocolate bars in the world after winning gold at the International Chocolate Awards.

Yes, the International Chocolate Awards are a real thing. The annual competition celebrates the world's best chocolatiers in categories as diverse as "Dark chocolate bars with an infusion or flavouring" to "Milk chocolate dragées, enrobed whole nuts." The event unfolded last Saturday during London, U.K.'s Chocolate Show.

SOMA took home gold at the World Finals in the "Plain/origin dark chocolate bars" category for its Porcelana bar. Its CSB Chama bar previously won best-in-show in the Americas regional, semifinal round back in April.

On Saturday, SOMA received seven additional awards including a silver for its Thai stick truffle. According to SOMA's owners David Castellan and Cynthia Leung, this is the first time Canada has won gold at the International Chocolate Awards' World Final competition.

House of the week: 179 Old Yonge Street

0

179 Old Yonge Street179 Old Yonge Street is listed for almost $4 million in the private enclave of Hogg's Hollow, one of the most affluent 'hoods in the city's north-end. The five bedroom, eight bathroom house was completely rebuilt this past winter, revived with a new modern design and a flair for innovative building materials.

Located near Yonge and York Mills, the house has seen a price drop -- a 10 per cent decrease since it was first on the market. No doubt this upscale neighbourhood is a pricey one with private botanical gardens, the historic Miller Tavern at the bottom of the hill, and homes lined with outdoor swimming pools, backyard tennis courts and cedar decks.

179 Old Yonge StreetThe hefty price tag shouldn't shock you on this street. Some nearby mega-mansions, resembling a mini Casa Loma, are priced higher, and in this area, you'll get more property space than further downtown in a narrow Yorkville Victorian. This multi-room property is not the fanciest on the block and slightly more intimate at 5,300 square feet.

With a new build, you can construct almost anything you'd want. The architect (and its owners) opted for simplicity; a space defining layout and clean lines. There's nothing too gutsy about the overall design--unless you want to throw in some bold colours or a gold-plated sculpture -- you can really make this house your own.

179 Old Yonge StreetSPECS

  • Address: 179 Old Yonge Street
  • Price: $3,950,000
  • Lot Size: 76 x 150 FT
  • Bedrooms: 5+1
  • Bathrooms: 8
  • Parking: 2
  • Taxes: $11,842
  • Walk Score: 51

179 Old Yonge StreetNOTABLE FEATURES

  • Approx. 5,300 square feet
  • Heated floors & driveway
  • Wine fridge
  • Fireplaces
  • Floating staircase
  • Spacious walk-in closest
  • Security cameras
  • Built-in sprinkler system

179 Old Yonge StreetGOOD FOR

Heated floor, stilettos and a massive walk-in closest. This sprawling layout was made for dancing around in high heels or barefoot, thanks to heated floors on the main and second levels. At 5,300 square feet and eight bathrooms, you'll never room out of space and the upper walk-in closest is wider and larger than some bachelor apartments.

179 Old Yonge StreetMOVE ON IF

You need a fully landscaped backyard. Where's the infinity swimming pool and underwater stereo? Where's the tennis court, outdoor fire pit and waterfall? In this upscale neighbourhood, one would expect a lush landscaped yard with all the trimmings. This corner lot has potential but only if you want to spend more dough for almost $4 mil.

How Toronto has voted in federal elections 2008-2015

0
0

toronto vote federal electionsToronto's voting habit in federal elections returned to its Liberal bias in last night's federal election, which was a major element in securing a majority government for the Grits. Back in 2011, the party lost historic ground in Toronto, with Conservative wins in semi-suburban ridings and a strong push by the NDP across downtown.

Where the 2011 election results map in Toronto was a tri-coloured mosaic, the 2015 version is entirely red. While there were some close races in ridings like Davenport and and Parkdale-High Park, the Liberals managed to take every seat they could in this city.

You'll note that changes to federal ridings for this election is also visible on the 2015 maps, which ultimately served to help the Liberals with the addition of more seats in the GTA. The story outside of Toronto's boundaries is rather different. Southern Ontario is still defined by a sea of blue, even as the Liberals made in-roads in the ridings immediately surrounding Toronto (as was the case in 2008).

The big loser here, of course, is the NDP, a party which had a surge in downtown Toronto in 2011, but failed to carry over any of its seats this time around. There are numerous reasons for this, but New Democrats appeared to lose a ton of steam when Tom Mulcair's polling numbers dipped and the party no longer appeared a viable alternative to Harper's Conservatives.

Compare and contrast Toronto's and Southern Ontario's voting habits over the last three federal elections below.

Kansas City library waging Twitter war with Jays fans

0
0

kansas city libraryFirst Kansas City Mayor Sly James wagered ribs and BBQ sauce on the ALCS. Now, the Kansas City Public Library is trolling the Toronto Blue Jays too.

After last night's disastrous game (we lost 14-2), the KCMO Public Library created some "book spine" poetry, basically kicking us while we were down. By stacking three books on top of each other, a creative librarian/social media person wrote out "Canada. Sorry You Lost. What Bluebirds Do."

As KCTV News notes, the Library tweeted out this verse to the Jays and to the Toronto Public Library. Now, let's hope that the TPL responds with something clever before game 5 this afternoon.

How should the TPL respond? Let us know in the comments.

Toronto man rethinks the traditional job hunt

0
0

saul coltInstead of submitting applications for his dream job, marketing pro Saul Colt let employers apply to him. It was all part of his #WinSaul online campaign, which wrapped up on October 19 at midnight.

Colt, who's a lifelong Torontonian, decided to use his marketing skills to find his ideal marketing job. He recently completed a yearlong contract with the San Francisco-based accounting company Xero and was planning his next career move.

Along with bringing Zipcar to Canada and helping to grow the Toronto-based startup FreshBooks, Colt has also consulted for numerous local and international organizations. Lately, he says, he kept running into walls when inquiring about certain jobs. Some companies said they couldn't afford him; others said he'd get bored working for them.

"Ultimately, this is my life and my career, so why wouldn't I try to find the greatest opportunity ever?" he says. He launched his campaign on October 11 with a blog post, a few tweets and by sending an email to 1,000 people asking them to share his unique project.

"The response has been crazy," he says. In total 41 employers applied to hire him; 20 of them were legitimate. And of those 20, Colt is seriously interested in seven. While he thinks he'll have secured a job by next week, he also hopes to have inspired others looking for work.

"You're really put into a position of inferiority," he says of the traditional job hunt. His #WinSaul campaign shows that anyone can bend the status quo. "Why can't the jobseeker have a little bit more control over their destiny?"

10 Toronto snapback hats you can buy right now

0
0

snapback hatsTopping off your outfit with a Toronto themed snapback hat will help you stylishly show your love for the city. While there is no shortage of t-shirts and Blue Jays themed attire on the market right now, hats have always been the number one way to advertise local pride. If you want something different than an MLB cap or We the North snapback, there are more than a few options floating around.

Here's a round-up of some of the top Toronto themed snapback hats you can buy in Toronto right now.

YYZ Snapback (Get Fresh Company)
If you're a globe-trotter that always returns to the six, this one will be right up your alley. The cap pays homage to Pearson Airport by boldly advertising its transmitter code, YYZ. Even if you don't rock a hat on the regular, this is the perfect option to shield your jet-lagged face on your journey home (or away).

peace collectiveTO Cap (Peace Collective)
Known for their wildly popular Toronto vs Everybody garb, Peace Collective has become the go-to website for those looking to wear their Toronto pride. If you're a fan of the brand, but think their signature logo is a bit too in your face, opt for this simple black and white hat. It'll show your love for the city without coming on too strong.

Thank You TorontoTO Varsity Snapback (Thank You Toronto)
Want to support the Blue Jays without purchasing an MLB cap? Sport the team colours with Thank You Toronto's blue and white snapback. Even if the Jays don't repeat their famed 1993 WAMCO win, you can still wear it with pride. Other colours are available, if you're not a Jays fan.

tuck shopCity of Neighbourhoods Ball Cap (Tuck Shop Co.)
If you loved the City of Neighbourhood's toque collection, but aren't prepared to sport full blown winter wear just yet, try one of these caps. Different than your traditional snapback, the Tuck Shop Co.'s hats have a five panel design. If you're in need of more neighbourhood-based merch, check out these equally cool keychains.

original 6H6ME Snapback (The Original 6)
This design not-so-subtly references the six with its trend-forward, minimalist look. Not your style? Original 6 also carries an alternative design, and toques (for when the weather takes a turn).

OVO6 God Snapback (OVO Store)
Looking for the perfect attire to wear while running through the six with your woes? Look no further than OVO's 6 God hat. As a bonus, you'll be sporting the same design as our resident 6 God's own ink.

6ixside6ixside Snapback (6ixside Clothing Co.)
This simple black and white snapback is the perfect way to give a subtle shout out to the six. If you want to skip the headwear, 6ixside Clothing Co. has dedicated its entire product range to the city, selling everything from Toronto themed tank tops to hoodies.

waves apparel416 Snapback (Waves Apparel)
Give the city some love by wearing its original area code. While 647 and 347 may be creeping onto the map, 416 will forever be known as the 3 digit code that best represents our city.

416coToronto 416 Hat (416Co)
Toronto natives and YouTubers, Lily Singh and Humble the Poet, penned the viral hit IVIVI, giving the city yet another nickname. Flaunt your local love by wearing it on your head. Don't worry, even if you're not familiar with the roman numeral reference, one of the I's is replaced by a CN tower, making it all the more obvious.

nrthCity Classic (nrth)
nrth gives a nod to Toronto by including the CN tower with its design. If you're looking for an alternative to the classic We the North cap, this might just be it.

What did I miss? Add your favourite Toronto themed hat to the comments.

The Best Jamaican Patties in Toronto

0
0

jamaican patties torontoThe best Jamaican patties in Toronto come straight from the source, made fresh at bakeries and restaurants across the city that bake turmeric-stained pastries stuffed with savoury fillings. While beef patties (spicy or mild) might be most popular, you'll also find plenty of patties in this city stuffed with everything from chickpeas or callaloo to salt fish, jerk pork and curry goat.

These are the best Jamaican patties in Toronto.

5 restaurants you can buy in Toronto right now

0
0

restaurants for sale torontoYou may not be able to win a Toronto restaurant in a raffle right now, but you can always buy your own eatery if you're still itching to enter the city's bustling food scene. With listings in Etobicoke all the way to Leslieville, there are plenty of places available for you to get started.

Here are 5 restaurants that you can buy right now in Toronto.

Chantecler
Yes, this popular Parkdale restaurant is still up and running, but you can take over the joint if you're willing to shell out $149,000. Will you keep the small menu the same or will you change it up to suit your own tastebuds?

Trevor's Kitchen
This upscale downtown spot by Trevor Wilkinson (who also owns Tavern By Trevor on Spadina), is currently for sale. The 4,055 square-foot, 107-seat restaurant is listed for $169,000 or $10,500 per month.

Le Petit France
If you're a fan of French food and Toronto's west end, this petite restaurant will be perfect for you. This 40-seater clocks in at 1,000 square feet. And, it could all be yours for $85,000, or $3,960 per month.

Wayla Bar
Perhaps you're looking to open a bar and not a restaurant? If so, consider this space on Queen East. If you do decide to shell out $150,000 to take it over, you'll get everything inside, except for the art.

Schnitzel Hub
The Thornhill outpost of this Schnitzel-centric eatery is currently for sale. The 900 square-foot space used to be Schnitzeland, but now it's unclear whether the neighbourhood will get to keep its deep-fried meat emporium. You can carry on the tradition for a cool $99,000, or $3,467 per month.

Which restaurant would you buy? Let us know in the comments.

The Toronto Public Library responds to Kansas City

0
0

Toronto Public Library Blue JaysThe Toronto Blue Jays are heading into game 5 against the Kansas City Royals right now. And yes, there's a possibility that the ALCS could end tonight. Thankfully, the Toronto Public Library is here to boost our morale by showing Kansas City (and its public library) that we won't go down without a fight.

In a book-spine poem of its own, the TPL sends out an ominous message that reads, "Warning, Kansas City. It Ain't Over 'Till It's Over."

After the Jays lost 14-2 last night, the Kansas City Public Library blasted out, "Canada. Sorry You Lost. What Bluebirds Do." But, we think TPL's response is the real winner in this Twitter feud.

Yet, the KC library has already fired back. Perhaps it's time to settle the score with some good, old-fashioned baseball.

What do you think? Let us know in comments.

Condo of the week: 56 Lippincott Street

0
0

56 Lippincott Street56 Lippincott Street is a boutique eight-storey complex near Bathurst and College. The $1.2 million urban townhouse is like no other in the area. A block west of Kensington Market, the Lippincott Living Condos was a bold development on a street lined with row houses no more than 14 feet wide.

A former Chicago 58 food warehouse, the modern complex was rebuilt in 2010 by interior-design firm Cecconi Simone and architect Brad Netkin, both known for a range of high profile projects in the city. The development veers from the traditional skybox shoebox, featuring eight spacious units, each at 2,000 square feet over three levels.

56 Lippincott StreetThis three-bedroom, three bathroom townhome is equivalent to owning a house in this neighbourhood. While real estate prices are slightly cheaper south of College, housing in the city has become less affordable and more first time buyers opting for smaller spaces or family-friendly condos.

This unit is a chic condo-alternative for the upscale buyer. The main floor features an open layout, modern kitchen with built-in seating and a small garden patio. The third floor master is a large space, feeling like a hotel suite, and a narrow hallway leading to a wood framed ensuite.

56 Lippincott StreetGOOD FOR

A modern innovative space geared for urbanites and young families. While the name "Lippincott Living" sounds like a stuffy retirement residence, the intimate building is actually a modern place to inhabit in the downtown core. Less stairs than a typical townhouse and a school across the street, it's ideal for a couple or families and walkable to multiple 'hoods like Little Italy and the Annex.

56 Lippincott StreetMOVE ON IF

You want that quiet suburban-style enclave. The "extensive sound-proofing" in the building is no match for this lively neighbourhood. College St. is a busy hub, booming with nightlife, 24-hour streetcars and emergency vehicles from Western Hospital and the nearby fire station.
