TTC to hike fares by 25 cents

$

0

ttcIt looks like the TTC will be hiking its fares to ring in the new year. That's right, starting January 1, 2016 it'll cost you more to get around Toronto via public transit.

Today, the TTC board voted to up fares in order to help offset the transit system's forecasted $53 million budget shortfall, reports the Toronto Star. While the board is freezing Metropass prices as well as student and senior fares, cash fares will go up 25 cents ($3.25) and a token will cost an addition 10 cents ($2.90).

This doesn't come as much of a surprise, considering the idea of a possible fare increase emerged back in July. However, despite the higher fare prices, the TTC will still require a hefty operating subsidy from the city of Toronto.

While the TTC may be more expensive in the near future, it did allocate $95 million towards service improvements, including more buses and streetcars on busy routes.

However, according to the Star, the TTC will be raising its fares largely because it doesn't get an operating subsidy from the provincial government. In fact, Toronto has one of least subsidized transit systems in North America.

What do you think of this fare hike? Let us know in the comments.

toronto holiday giftsKnow someone whose love for Toronto rivals that of Drake? Why not give them a present that pays homage to our fair city. Whether you're in the gift market for a transit geek or a locally obsessed fashionista, we've got you covered.

Here are 10 holiday gift ideas for the Toronto lover on your list.

Home is Toronto Letterman Jacket
Peace Collective saw sales soar this year when Blue Jays players were seen sporting Toronto vs Everybody sweaters. If you've got a Jays fan on your list, the classic sweater may be a good option. But if you want to skip gifting something with a controversial slogan, opt for the Home is Toronto jacket. The stylish piece will make for the perfect spring coat when the city starts to thaw in 2016.

All the Libraries Toronto Colouring Book
The Gladstone Melody Bar and Artless Hub have hosted many boozy colouring jams this year where adults sipped cocktails while doodling to their heart's content. If someone you know has joined in, this may be the perfect city themed gift to give. Want to throw in something extra? The Toronto Library Passport or United Colours of Kensington Market would make the perfect companion.

toronto blue jays coastersBlue Jays Greatest Plays Slate Coasters
Many a Torontonian hopped on the Blue Jays bandwagon this year, celebrating the successes of Bautista, Donaldson, Encarnacion and company. However, tried and true Jays fans still hold the days of WAMCO dear and know the plays that brought the team to fame. For those friends, I suggest gifting these coasters. The set of four includes iconic plays from 2010, 2003, 1993 and 1992.

Then and Now: Toronto Nightlife History
Give your club-hopping friend a bit of a history lesson with this read. The book, written by DJ Denise Benson, explores four decades of Toronto nightlife, looking at 48 of its most well loved venues, clubs and bars. Pair it with your recipient's alcohol of choice and you're good to go.

YYZ shirtPilot & Captain YYZ shirt
Trying to find the perfect gift for a globe-trotting Torontonian? Look no further than this graphic tee. The shirt gives a shout out to Pearson Airport by advertising its transmitter code, YYZ. It's made of a soft poly-blend, so it'll keep your recipient comfortable on his/her next journey to or from the city.

BonValley Neighbourhood Banners
City of Neighbourhoods merch is probably the most well known way to rep a favourite Toronto neighbourhood. Not everyone wants to wear their local pride, though. If someone on your list loves their hood, but wouldn't be caught dead in a snapback or toque, these BonValley banners might be his/her cup of tea. There are currently six neighbourhoods and a Toronto themed style up for sale.

ttc phone caseStationToronto Subway Phone Cases
There is rarely a day when you won't see commuters glued to their phones, fiddling with apps, texting or downloading the latest and greatest on iTunes. Well why not merge your commuting comrade's love of technology with the TTC by gifting them a station themed phone case. If you want more transit-themed options, check out the official TTC merch site.

Print of Vintage Rogers Centre Seating Chart
This vintage print of the Rogers Centre is perfect for the Toronto sports lover on your list. Depending on your budget, you can purchase it on photo paper or a canvas. It also comes in a variety of colours, so you can tailor it to mesh with your recipient's home decor.

toronto tote bagSpruce Toronto Market Bag
Got a friend who frequents farmers' markets? Gift them a stylish new shopping tote so that they can ditch their garish reusable bags from Sobeys. It's got a waterproof interior and is much more fashion forward than those sold at the supermarket. You'll also be doing some good, as some of the profits go to providing aid to families in need.

Toronto Signs
Give the gift of home decor with these Toronto signs from Elte Market. They're minimal enough that they suit a range of interior design styles, so you can probably skip including a gift receipt. There are currently 10 styles available: Danforth, Jarvis, Bathurst, Bloor, College, Dufferin, Gerrard, Queen, Yonge and Spadina.

stellaThanks to Stella Artois for sponsoring our 2015 gift guide. The Stella Artois Holiday 750 ml bottle is the perfect gift to celebrate the Holiday season.

163 Macpherson AvenueThis is what $2.4 million looks like at Avenue Road and Dupont. 163 Macpherson Avenue is a renovated semi featuring three bedrooms, five bathrooms, a cozy landscaped backyard and a carport in the laneway for two car parking.

The multi-million dollar property is typical of the neighbourhood. Around the corner from Yorkville and the upscale retailers that dot Avenue Road, this pricey residential pocket is premium real estate. The houses, especially on this street, have narrow lot sizes (this property is 18 feet wide), and front pad parking is a rarity.

163 Macpherson AvenueToronto firm Studio Pyramid redesigned the 2,500 square foot space to include an open layout flowing with natural light, and an abundance of outdoor space. The meticulously designed home offers a few clever selling features. The floating staircase is mounted, allowing for additional space on the main level and the chalkboard wall in the basement makes for a great office or playroom.

The king of the throne. The modern abode boasts five bathrooms, and each bedroom features its own private ensuite. The master ensuite is pure decadence, that is, if you have a fondness for deep soaker tubs, glass showers and overhanging chandeliers.

163 Macpherson AvenueMOVE ON IF

You want a driveway and VIP parking. A $2.4 million semi in the city offers select luxuries; unfortunately unlimited property space isn't one of them. The carport, accessed in the laneway, fits two cars and street parking in the area is limited. Better yet, park the vehicle and take transit in this highly walkable 'hood.

The top 5 breakfast burgers in Toronto

$

breakfast burger torontoBurgers for breakfast are hardly an anomaly in Toronto. In a city where poutine qualifies as morning food, it's unsurprising that Toronto restaurants are willing to top any indulgence with a fried egg and call it brunch.

Here are my picks for the top breakfast burgers in Toronto.

Corktown Kitchen
Wrap your hands around The Lot Burger ($16) off the brunch menu at this King East eatery. This beast features a five ounce beef patty loaded with house-smoked pork belly, a fried egg, cheese, and hollandaise sauce.

Fabbrica
Mark McEwan's Don Mills restaurant is a splurge-worthy brunch destination where the upscale brunch burger ($25) starts with a six ounce patty formed from PEI grass-fed beef. Instead of the usual condiments, this burger is upgraded with crispy genoa salami, antipasto, provolone, and arugula before being crowned with a sunny side up egg.

Thompson Diner
The 24-hour diner at the base of the Thompson Hotel is home to a hangover-curing brunch burger ($14.45) built on a sugar dusted doughnut. Topped with bacon, fried egg and melted cheddar, this handheld breakfast is served with homefries on the side.

The Borough
The full English breakfast burger ($14) served at brunch by this Brit-style local on the Danforth features an organic beef patty loaded onto a brioche bun and topped with a fried free run egg, aged cheddar, rasher bacon, sautéed onions, tomato slices, greens and buttermilk dill dressing. As if that's not enough food, each order is served with a heaping pile of beans and potato hash on the side.

Momofuku Daisho
Served on weekends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there's only a short window to enjoy this brunch burger ($21) featuring melted Hades cheese, with coffee cured belly bacon, and a runny fried egg on a toasted bun.

drake adeleDrake's "Hotline Bling" and Adele's "Hello" are arguably two of the biggest songs of the year. And both are about telephones. That's why artist Dave Valeza created an illustration of the two superstar musicians playing phone tag, reports CBC Arts.

On Sunday, Drake blasted out the drawing to his 16 million Instagram followers, albeit without mentioning Valeza. As CBC notes, he took to Twitter writing, "Someone famous posting my art without credit! Wish I could say I'm surprised that this keeps happening to artists."

Me and my main ting just coolin. 😍

He continued to Tweet about the situation as Drake's Instagram post raked in more than 400,000 like and 12,000 comments. But, it still hasn't been updated to credit Valeza.

Do you think Drake will eventually credit Valeza? Let us know in the comments.

The top 5 hills for running in Toronto

$

hills torontoHill running in Toronto may not be at the top of your to do list, but it will certainly make you a faster, stronger, and healthier runner. Even though Toronto is somewhat flat, this city is surprisingly blessed with a host challenging inclines that'll test your mettle.

Here are my picks for the best hills for running in Toronto.

Christie Pits
Conveniently located right outside Christie Station, this hill is suitable for all abilities as the hills vary in steepness. The incline along Bloor St. West is perfect for beginners and is great for some people watching too.

Riverdale Park
This hill is so well known that there are tracks in the grass where people have altogether decided that it's the perfect climb. Featuring a beautiful view of the city and a Rooster's a short walk away, this is one to add to the list.

City Hall
Great for when you don't want to leave the downtown core, the ramp leading to the environmental garden is a steady slow incline. Best run during the early hours of the morning or early evening to avoid downtown dwellers.

High Park
Located a short walk from High Park's subway station, Spring Road hill is the most challenging climb in the park. This trek is perfect for creating an out of city feel from within the city.

Rosedale TTC station to St. Clair TTC station
A steady 1.5 kilometer incline from Crescent Road to St. Clair, this hill will test your endurance and whip you into shape real quick. Cool down at the Rosehill reservoir after.

Rancho Relaxo re-opening in new location

Rancho RelaxoRancho Relaxo is set to return to the restaurant game in Toronto with a new space in the Junction Triangle at the corner of Edwin and Dupont across from Farmhouse Tavern.

The long-time College Street institution packed things up back in July (that space is now Old Laurel) with plans to focus on their food truck operations. Now they're taking what they've learned from their truck experience and opening a take-out spot called Rancho Relaxo to Go.

Early indications are the the menu will be very similar to what's on offer from the food truck. Expect fish and pulled pork tacos, burritos, quesadillas as well as vegan (cauliflower tacos) and gluten-free options.

The new space is small, but there's enough seating that it'll feature free WiFi for those looking to get some work done. The opening date hasn't been revealed yet, but based on the state of the interior, I'd expect it to happen in the next couple of weeks.

The Junction Triangle now boasts a trio of cheap eats around this corner with TuckShop Kitchen and Baguette and Co. all nearby. More good news for a neighbourhood on the rise.

Toronto to build $20 million bridge at Fort York

Fort York Bridge TorontoThe Fork York Pedestrian Bridge is back, as Build Toronto unveiled a new design for the infrastructure project that Rob Ford notoriously cancelled back in 2011. The new bridge isn't quite as stunning as the earlier iteration, but just having the project in the works is good news for the city.

fort york pedestrian bridgeThe new bridge will come in at $20 million and is projected to be open for spring 2017. The project will link Fort York with neighbourhoods and parks to the south and north, and play a crucial role in fostering access to the recently announced Under the Gardiner development.

fort york pedestrian bridgeNaturally, it's also good news for Fort York itself, which now boasts a gorgeous visitor centre that could easily accommodate more people poking about into Toronto's deep history. With the bridge in place, the Fort will be situated as a central space between the waterfront/revitalized Queens Quay and Trinity Bellwoods Park. That's some prime cultural real estate.

fort york pedestrian bridgeIt's a rather Toronto story this bridge. Initially approved back in 2007, it's taken years and years to get the project to construction status. In the process our expectations on the design were lowered, but the tremendous value of the link itself remains undiminished.

Leafs no longer most valuable NHL team

leafs forbesThe Toronto Maple Leafs can say na na na na hey hey goodbye to being the most valuable NHL franchise.

According to Forbes, the team is now worth $1.15 billion, which makes it the third most valuable franchise behind the Montreal Canadiens ($1.18 billion) and the New York Rangers ($1.2 billion). As the Toronto Star notes, the average NHL team is now worth $505 million.

According to the Star, the Leafs' poor performance over the past number of years has likely led to its decreased valuation. It's no surprise really considering the team hasn't made it to the playoffs since 2013. And, if these rankings count for anything, ESPN has named the Leafs the worst sports franchise in North America for the past two years.

Nations supermarket opening first Toronto location

nations fresh foodsWhen American retail giant Target closed its 133 Canadian stores, it left five big-box holes in Toronto-area malls and plazas. However, it looks like one will be getting a more permanent makeover as a Nations Fresh Foods supermarket.

As Andrea Williams spotted on Twitter, the Stockyards will soon be home to Toronto's first Nations. The small grocery chain, which lies under the larger Oceans Fresh Food Market banner, already has two locations: one in Vaughan and another in Hamilton.

Nations is touted as more "upscale" than Oceans by the Hamilton Spectator and its other outposts feature a fresh fish counter, a butcher, a bakery, a bubble tea bar, sushi and fresh dim sum.

What do you think of this addition to the Stockyards? Let us know in the comments.

Buster Rhinos TorontoBuster Rhino's has shut down its only Toronto outpost today. Formerly located at 838 College Street in Little Italy, this southern-style BBQ joint will live on at its three other Durham-area eateries.

The restaurant announced its swift departure from the Toronto food scene on social media earlier today. Though short-lived, its meat-centric menu and selection of craft beer will be missed on the College Street strip. Here's what Buster Rhino's Toronto had to say on Instagram.

We are saddened to announce that due to personal reasons, the owners of Buster Rhino's Toronto have decided not to continue operations at 838 College St., effective immediately. We would like to thank the owners, managers and their staff for their dedication to the brand and wish them well in their future endeavors. To the customers who enjoyed the food at Buster Rhino's Toronto, THANK YOU. We encourage you to continue to support local restaurants and bars, and we are excited to continue to serve you the best BBQ in Ontario at our 3 other locations in the Durham region. UP Express offering big discounts to boost ridership

union pearson expressThe Union Pearson Express (UPX) might be convenient, but it's not that popular yet. However, the train service is about to get a bit more enticing thanks to the steep discounts Metrolinx will soon start offering to riders.

As the Toronto Star reports today, Metrolinx will be giving out coupons that'll let you snag a return ticket for $27.50 - that's the regular price for a single fare.

According to the Star, this marketing plan isn't a response to low ridership. Rather, it's a tactic to help boost awareness for the UPX. Other airport train services, such as the Heathrow Express in London and Stockholm's Arlanda Express, have used similar tactics, notes the Star.

Metrolinx is hoping to have 5,000 riders per day by June, 2016. Right now, approximately 2,500 people use the UPX daily.

TTC wants a cut of branded merchandise sales

ttc coasterDespite our frequent complaints about our transit system, we Torontonians love TTC-branded products. From apparel to posters, we have plenty of options to choose from at bricks-and-mortar stores and online retailers. Now, the TTC is looking to cash in on this unofficial merchandise, reports Metro News.

According to Metro, Toronto is eyeing other cities' licensing procedures. During a trip to New York City, for instance, TTC Chair Josh Colle realized that the Metro Transit Authority (MTA) had its own such program. And, Colle thinks licensed merch could give the TTC an additional revenue stream.

However, not everyone says it'll be worth it for the TTC to change the status quo. Matthew Blackett from Spacing (whose store is one of the biggest sellers of TTC branded merchandise) doubts the TTC would make much if it forces Toronto artists and retailers to buy a license in order to use its brand assets.

ttc guitar pic"They're not going to make a lot of money from licensing, so let anyone do what they're doing as long as it doesn't damage the brand," he said, speaking to Metro.

Do you think the TTC should start a licensing program? Let us know in the comments.

The top 42 Black Friday sales in Toronto for 2015

black friday torontoBlack Friday 2015 sales in Toronto see local shops doing their best to make this shopping event a thing in Canada. Prepare to battle the crowds at shopping malls and popular stores as stock is getting slapped with heavily reduced price tags. If you take an aggressive approach to shopping, this may be your ideal day for knocking some names off your gift list.

Here are my picks for the top Black Friday sales in Toronto for 2015.

TECH

Best Buy
Best Buy is a favourite destination for sale-savvy techies on Black Friday. Those who are willing to brave the chaos will find select TVs, DSLR cameras, and computers with hundreds of dollars hacked off the price tags.

Henry's
Henry's is where to go this Friday if your camera equipment needs a revamp. The shop is cutting the prices on the Sony a6000 ($100 off), Fujifilm XT-1 ($200 off), Sony DSC-RX100 ($80 off) and a few more models.

Vistek
Vistek has yet to announce its price cuts, only advertising the sale with a countdown and vague rundown of which products will be discounted. What we know so far: there will be deals on DSLRs, tripods, lenses, camera bags and video equipment.

The Source
The Source is putting hundred of items on sale for its Black Friday extravaganza. If you can get to the store early, you may be able to get your hands on a discounted Xbox One or Fluid 55" HDTV (only $499). They also have a few online exclusives, if you don't feel like leaving your house.

Microsoft Store
If you've pledged allegiance to Bill Gates, shunning Apple products in favour of Microsoft goods, you'll probably want to see what's cooking at the Microsoft Store. Deals include $150 tablets and $100 Xbox One bundles.

FOOTWEAR

SVP Sports
SVP Sports normally has pretty low prices compared to competitors, so its sales are worth checking out. As of now, they store has not released what its Friday discounts will looks like, but you can expect top sneaker brands (think Nike, Vans and Converse) at extremely low prices.

Little Burgundy
Little Burgundy has cut prices on all its sale merchandise by 50% and hacked 20% off some of its regularly priced stock. You'll find Timberlands and UGGs among the on-sale stock, so if you need to invest in some winter footwear, now's the time.

ALDO
ALDO has put over 1000 styles on sale (50% off) in the name of Black Friday. If you plan on shopping in-store, remember that not all ALDO locations were created equally; in these situations it's best to go big or stay home.

Call It Spring
For Black Friday, Call it Spring has taken an additional 40% off of its sale merchandise. Now most pairs ring in between $20-$50. Select regularly priced men's and women's boots have also received cuts, now costing only $69.99.

Nine West
Got holiday parties coming up but nothing to wear? Head to Nine West to grab a new bag or a pair of pumps. The shop is cutting prices on all its stock (including sale merchandise) by 40%.

John Fluevog
John Fluevog is hosting Black Friday sales at both of its locations. You'll find fashionable footwear for up to 65% off.

CLOTHING

Holt Renfrew
If you like luxury goods but not their price tag, now's the time to head to Holts. The city's classiest shopping destination is reducing prices for Magenta Friday. You'll fine top of the line designer goods for up to 50% off.

Over The Rainbow
On Friday Over The Rainbow will cut the prices on select denim by 40%. That means you might be able to grab a pair of jeans from 7 For All Mankind or J Brand for under $200. Bonus, if you fall in love with a regularly priced piece, the store will cover the taxes for you.

Ted Baker
Of the stores in the Eaton Centre, Ted Baker is not known as being one of the cheapest. If you want to snag a piece from the fashion-forward London brand, I suggest going Friday. Prices on select goods are reduced by 40%.

North Standard Trading Post
If you prefer supporting local brands, North Standard is worth hitting up. The shop is taking 30% off its entire stock. You'll be able to find everything from beanies to blankets by HBC, Tuck Shop Co. and more.

Forever 21
Forever 21 is normally pretty good with prices, so it should come as no surprise that its Black Friday prices are insanely low (starting at $6). If you want to revamp your entire wardrobe, this is a one stop shop.

True Religion
You'll be able to snag all your garb at True Religion for 40% (some exclusions apply). If there was ever a time to stock up on jeans, it's now.

Aritzia
At Aritzia you can grab pieces from Talula, TNA, Wilfred and more for up to 50% off from November 24th-29th. For Friday only, Aritzia will have everything for up to 50% off on sale in stores and online. Thankfully it's not just summer overstock. There's plenty of knits and parkas that would cost you a pretty penny otherwise.

Indochino
Need to suit up for the holiday season? Indochino is cutting the prices on some of its slickest creations. Reductions range between 10%-70%, so could save you hundreds of dollars.

Korry's
Korry's, a favourite for meanswear on The Danforth, will cut prices by 50% on select styles in the name of Black Friday. So if you're in need of a new blazer or full suit, now's the time to buy.

Drake General Store
The Drake General Store has made Black Friday a full weekend-long event. Depending on how much you're planning on spending, you could get up to $50 off your purchase. The shop sells clothes as well as a bunch of unique giftable goods, so now's the time to get some holiday shopping done.

H&M
H&M is doing some hefty price cuts this Friday. Items start at $5, so now's the time to stock up on winter clothing and accessories. Plan to go as early as possible, as lines will probably rival those of the Balmain release.

Gotstyle
In the market for a new leather jacket? They'll be 30% off at Gotstyle this Friday. If you'd rather invest in a suit or sport coat, they'll be on offer on a buy one get one 50% deal.

Fred Perry
Fred Perry may not be advertising their sale online just yet, but if you've subscribed to their emails you'll know that their fall/winter collection will be 30%-50% off.

Motoretta
The November weather has played some tricks on us, lulling many a Torontonian into a false sense of security. December is almost upon us, so you can bet that the temperature is about to make a steep decline. Luckily, Motoretta is selling parkas for 30%, so you can prepare yourself while being fiscally responsible.

TOPSHOP/TOPMAN
Looking to add some trend-forward pieces to your wardrobe? Head to TOPSHOP and TOPMAN to get your hands on boots, bomber jackets and basics for fairly low prices. The Bay store is offering up to 40% off sweaters and coats and 20% off all other merchandise.

Smoke + Ash
Smoke + Ash may not be advertising the details of its sale yet, but expect to find discounted items at the store on Friday (those that subscribe to their newsletter have seen the vague email about the impending Black Friday extravaganza).

Shopgirls
What's better than buying local? Buying local at a steep discount, obviously. Shopgirls is offering 20%-25% on select goods on Friday. There's plenty of winter friendly gear included in the sale, if you haven't purchased a new parka or scarf in a while.

The Bay
The Bay sells everything from outwear to appliances, making it a one stop shop. While the sales have been plentiful all week, you'll want to head to the store extra early on Friday. The first 200 customers in the store at 7 a.m. will receive a $20 savings card.

Urban Planet
Urban Planet has been counting down the days until Black Friday with new sales added every day. The main event, however, offers the best of the best deals. On top of the shop hosting giveaways galore (we're talking free iPhones, iPads, and Hoverboards), it's offering a store-wide buy one get one 70% off deal at select locations.

Bodyblue
Head to Bodyblue to take advantage of its bogo deal. The shop carries almost every brand of denim imaginable, so if you practically live in jeans this should be your Black Friday destination.

BOOKS

Silver Snail Comics
If you're into comics, you're probably familiar with the Silver Snail. On Friday most of the stock will be 20%-60% off, so you can buy up your favourite superhero stories and/or memorabilia without putting a huge dent in your bank account.

Indigo
Head to your local Indigo/Chapters/Coles to get stellar deals on books, stationary, and electronic goods. Kobo Glos have been reduced to $99.99, and you can grab bestselling books for up to 70% off.

MUSIC

Play De Record
Vinyl fanatics will want to head to Play De Record on Friday. The store is celebrating Record Store Day's Black Friday sale by showcasing special vinyl and CD releases. The shop will open at 9am and have 10% off all non-Record Store Day records as well in honour of Black Friday.

Kops Records
Kops Records is also celebrating Record Store Day's Black Friday sale with special releases evenly distributed among its three shops. As for Black Friday deals, all $1 records will be 50% off, all diggers/value/45s will be 20% off and all vintage LPs will be 15% off. If you spend $15 or more on vintage records, you'll also get 15% off new records.

Dead Dog Records
Dead Dog Records has yet to release the details of its sale, but you can expect a ton of discounted vinyl, CDs, memorabilia and more. Keep your eye on the store's Facebook page for details.

HMV
It may not have the same appeal as an independently run record store, but HMV has some of the best deals in town when it comes to music, movies and memorabilia. You can save up to 75% on selected stock online and in-store.

Long & McQuade
If you want to make your own music, head to Long & McQuade this Friday. Select stores will have discounts on everything from drum kits to celtic harps. There's also a ton of audio equipment on sale.

The Royal Conservatory
Rather invest in seeing live music? For one day only, you can purchase tickets to select Koerner Hall concerts at 20% off. All sale concerts run between December 5th and April 23rd, so they could make a great Christmas present for the music lover in your life.

HOME DECOR

Elte Market
The furniture sold at Elte Market normally comes with a hefty price tag attached. However, this Friday you'll be able to purchase some pieces at IKEA prices. Grab chairs for under $400, sofas for under $700, and throws for less than $40.

Haveli Home
Head to the Junction if you want to get in on the Black Friday sales but would rather skip high volume shopping areas. At Haveli Home you'll be able to buy textiles at 25% off and select furniture at 40% off.

IKEA
If you are in desperate need of a home makeover and brave enough to take on one of the busiest Black Friday destinations, head to IKEA. The first 200 visitors will get $50 off their purchase while the first 500 visitors can claim a free breakfast (so get there as early as possible). If you aren't an early riser, there are still plenty of discounts to take advantage of on everything from sofas to bags.

TTC rolls out free WiFi to more subway stations

ttc wifiGood news TTC subway riders - the WiFi network continues to expand with the recent inclusion of Sherbourne and Castle Frank stations, bringing the total number of stations with the service to 17. Wind Mobile users can also access cell signals at these platforms.

The eastward roll out on Line 2 hasn't been advertised by the TTC itself, though it was made public by the Twitter account for TCONNECT in recent days.

While no one is about to hand out medals for the speed at which WiFi has been rolled out on the TTC, it's worth noting that the pace has been steady. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross tells me that there's lots of testing taking place on Line 2 right now, and that the Commission will likely have an announcement to make about wider coverage in a week or so.

In the meantime, pull out your phone if you currently use Sherbourne or Castle Frank stations. The signal is live.
