Osgoode subway station getting a major facelift

$

Osgoode subwayThe TTC's Osgoode subway station is the latest on the University side of Line 1 to be treated to a full panelling makeover. That's a good thing too, as it was probably the ugliest station in the lower loop of the system.

Most of the mucus-toned plastic panels have been removed to reveal the original Vitrolite tiles, which are similar in colour but far prettier even if they're covered in years upon years of soot build-up. The vertical panels at Osgoode always seemed like the TTC mailed it in when they gave up on maintaining the delicate Vitrolite tiles.

Osgoode station renovationsSoon the station will boast the new metal panels that have also been installed at St. Andrew Station. These have the feel of the original tiles, but are far more durable. The main colour stays (mostly) the same, while the trim has now been darkened from the original light blue.

Osgoode station renovationsWhile not perhaps quite as interesting as the dichotomy between old and new at College Station, it's worth looking up from your newspaper/phone/e-reader when you next pass by Osgoode to see the station in this strange moment of transition.

Osgoode station renovationsIt will soon look far cleaner, but don't expect to get another glimpse at the original tiles for another 50 years or so.

What a revitalized George St. might look like in Toronto

george street revitalization torontoIn a city brimming with sparkling new condos, George St. is an unusual and problematic place. Well, not all of the street, but the section between Dundas and Gerrard flanked by Filmore's strip club and the Seaton House shelter is like no other stretch of road in Toronto for its overt drug dealing, abandoned houses, and general sad state of affairs.

george street revitalization torontoA long needed revitalization plan is finally in the works for George St., one that will hopefully address the neglect that's defined this short stretch of Toronto for the last decade or so. The vision calls for the expansion and reconfiguration of Seaton House -- removing emergency shelter spots in favour of long term care and assisted living.

george street revitalization torontoThere are a number of challenges facing the street at present, but the two main ones are the manner in which Seaton House is integrated with the neighbourhood and the row of eight abandoned houses to the south of the shelter. Over the last five years, the city has acquired these properties, which was crucial to moving forward with the redevelopment of Seaton House.

george street revitalization torontoAlthough specific plans for their restoration have yet to be revealed, the city is adamant that these heritage-designation properties will be restored as part of plans to revitalize the street over the next five years. In fact, breathing new life into these old houses is believed to be a key way to "de-institutionalize the street," according to the George Street Revitalization Project Overview.

george street revitalization torontoIt's worth noting, of course, that these are conceptual renderings and subject to change. They don't necessarily paint an exact picture of what a future George St. will look like, but rather what the underlying vision for the street is. But even if the details change, it's plain to see that major changes are in store.

george street revitalization torontoSome of these images might even seem like pie in the sky, particularly given the current state of the street, but one has to believe that an investment that's been pegged as high as $500 million could usher in an entirely new George St., one that the city might actually be able to take some pride in.

george street revitalization torontoMore than anything, the revitalization seeks to diminish transience on the street. Along with better integration of the shelter with the street as a whole, the primary way such a task might be accomplished is via the drastic reduction of emergency shelter beds, down to 100 from the 240 designated for such use out of the 543 total beds currently on offer.

george street revitalization torontoA revitalized George St. is still a long way way. The earliest an overhaul like this might come to fruition is 2021, but it's a very good sign that the project is coming along. There's much potential on this street, so long as we collectively decide to care about its future.

What do you think of the conceptual renderings for a revitalized George St.? Let us know in the comments.

fashion gifts men holidaysMen in Toronto are a fashionable bunch, but thankfully, there are a bevy of options out there if you're looking to surprise your suavest friend or loved one. From fancy loungewear to artisanal grooming products, this city is brimming with gifting possibilities.

Here are my picks for holiday gift ideas for men who love fashion in Toronto.

DW Leatherworks wallet
Muddy George recently opened in Bloorcourt. And, it's one of two stores in Toronto that carries Vancouver-based brand DW Leatherworks accessories. These affordable, folded card wallets are easy to carry around in your pocket and come in four neutral colours (black, brown, tan and chestnut).

Standard Luggage Carry-on Backpack
Many jet-setters hate checking their bags because it makes traveling way less seamless. With the Standard Luggage backpack, which was successfully funded via Kickstarter, you can toss everything into a single bag that's guaranteed to fit in your overhead bin.

fashion gifts men holidaysPresent Day: The Goods Men's Box
Order this artfully arranged gift box ($125) filled with local products, including a handmade handkerchief/pocket-square from RCBoisJoli Domestic Goods and a facial moisturizer from Rowan Homespun - it's suitable for those with or without facial hair.

18 Waits Tie
Gerhard Supply is filled with drool-worthy items, but most of them are not budget friendly. But, if you want to shop local, consider the 18 Waits tie ($95 yes, still pricey). They come in navy or charcoal grey wool - the same fabric 18 Waits uses to make its signature suits.

Legends League Grab Box
The Legends League recently opened its first bricks-and-mortar store in Toronto, but it has been selling its streetwear since 2008. Pick up a grab box (because who doesn't like surprises?), which will come stuffed with three items from LL's past collections.

United Stock Dry Goods t-shirt
You can never go wrong with getting someone a t-shirt, especially one by United Stock Dry Goods. Pick up one of these incredibly soft tees at Sydney's. These made-in-Canada shirts come in plain, neutral colours or emblazoned with simple graphics.

fashion gifts men holidaysUrban Beard Box
Give the gift of good grooming with the Urban Beard Box. It's filled with a variety of Urban Beard products, like beard butter, beard oil, trimming scissors and a beard brush. And gift-wrapping is easy because it all comes packaged in a handmade pine box.

The Common-Folk scarf
This rustic-looking scarf is an all-season accessory by local brand The Common-Folk. It's handmade in Toronto with fabric sources directly from Okayama, Japan. Despite being called a blanket scarf, the Kansai isn't duvet-sized. Rather, it looks and feels like a perfectly cozy blanket. Find one online or in limited quantities at Park & Province.

fashion gifts men holidaysNike Air Max 1 - The 6
Nike is the shoe brand du jour and this coveted, limited-edition pair of Air Max 1s is ideal for long walks around the city. You'll have to wait until Sunday, December 6 to pick them up from a select group of Toronto retailers.

Majestic Facial Hair service
Saul's Beauty Shop is an intimidating spa for people of all genders. And, it offers a myriad of services including the delightfully named "Majestic Facial Hair" treatment. With Saul's online store, it's even easier to pamper that special bearded someone in your life with this $40 conditioning facial.

stellaThanks to Stella Artois for sponsoring our 2015 gift guide. The Stella Artois Holiday 750 ml bottle is the perfect gift to celebrate the Holiday season.

Volunteer opportunities during the holidays in Toronto

toronto volunteer opportunitiesVolunteer opportunities in Toronto over the holidays offer a way to give back to the less fortunate at a time of rampant consumption and commercialism. Whether you're looking to spread some holiday cheer with a short-term stint at an organization or something a little more permanent, these places are worth your attention.

Here's a round-up volunteer opportunities during the holidays in Toronto.

Yonge Street Mission
The Yonge Street Mission has a ton of holiday volunteering options available. You can apply to help with the toy market, holiday decorating, baking cookies and more - note that the spots for these positions fill up early so you may be wait-listed. If you're feeling particularly festive, you can take on the role of Santa Claus (provided you have your own suit) or join the choir.

Second Harvest
Second Harvest's goal is to feed the hungry, supplying meals to those in need with food donated by local retailers, manufacturers and restaurants. The organization has both long and short-term positions to fill. If you want to help out over the holidays, they're currently looking for volunteers to help out with their turkey drive.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is on the hunt for volunteers in the GTA to lend a helping hand this December. There are still plenty of spots to fill for the organization's annual Gingerbread Build, where you can sign on to help with the set-up or as an assistant. If you don't have the time this month to commit to a few days of work, Habit for Humanity is sure to have more volunteer opportunities come 2016.

Daily Bread Food Bank
The Daily Bread Food Bank supplies food and support to nearly 200 programs in the city. With many food drives happening around Toronto in December, you can expect that they'll need all the help they can get sorting through donations. Online registration to become part of the holiday drive volunteer team begins on December 15.

Circle of Care
Circle of Care has over 350 volunteers that help keep the organization afloat. You can sign on to join the team temporarily for the holidays, or commit to a more permanent position. One of the easiest ways to help is by taking part in their Kosher Meals on Wheels initiative - you can apply to be a driver or organize the deliveries.

pet adoption torontoPet and dog adoption organizations abound in Toronto. Whether you're in the market for a new pooch, cat, rabbit or a reptile, these facilities will get you a new friend faster than Facebook. Who knows, maybe your new pal will even rise to Instagram stardom?

Here's a roundup of places where you can adopt a new four-legged friend in Toronto.

Toronto Humane Society
Located at the corner of Queen East and River, the Toronto Humane Society is the most popular pet adoption source in the city. The shelter houses cats and dogs of all ages, plus a ton of small pets like rabbits, turtles and birds. If you're not ready to fully commit, you can always apply to foster an animal.

Etobicoke Humane Society
The Etobicoke Humane Society is an independently run operation that's kept afloat by volunteers and donations. It looks after both canines and cats, most of which have been surrendered by owners who could/would no longer care for their pets. If you're in the market for a furry friend on the west side, it's worth checking out.

Toronto Animal Services
Toronto Animal Services is the "jack of all trades," as far as pet adoption is concerned. It has several locations around the city offering everything from spaying and neutering to pet licensing. Depending when and where you visit, you'll find cats, dogs and/or small pets up for adoption.

Annex Cat Rescue
The Annex Cat Rescue helps takes homeless cats off the streets and moves them into forever homes. The volunteer-run operation gives medical attention, food, and shelter to unwanted or abandoned cats around the city. It has both fostering and adoption programs, if you're looking to help out short-term or take one home for good.

North Toronto Cat Rescue
North Toronto Cat Rescue serves Toronto, Markham, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket, and the South York Region. The shelter's goal is to save cats and kittens, taking them off the streets or away from abusive owners. You'll find felines of all ages and breeds up for adoption here.

The top 5 holiday comedy shows to see in Toronto

$

comedy shows torontoLook, you have all winter to ski, skate, and shop. With many of Toronto's best comics home from LA for the holidays, these line-ups are especially stacked with talent. And besides, studies show that people who acquire experiences over possessions lead much happier lives. SCIENCE.

Here are my picks for the top comedy shows to see in Toronto during the holidays.

CLICK, BAIT, & SWITCH | SECOND CITY | WED-SAT ALL DEC | $30-45

My date left the show bewildered. How come she never knew THAT'S what they meant by sketch and improv comedy?! She thought it was just gonna be a bunch of adults playing dress-up. During the show, I must've muttered genius on at least four separate occasions, and that's when I wasn't laughing at the brilliant improv that the performers weaved into their sets. The above clip features Kyle Dooley, one of the show's stars.

QUINN C. MARTIN | HARLEM RESTAURANT | 67 RICHMOND E | SUN DEC 6 & WED DEC 30 | 830PM | $15

In the past year, Quinn's done everything from a Timmie's commercial to receiving a sponsorship from Ewing Athletics. But now, armed with a licence, US Visa, and tour dates galore, this might be the last time we see him for awhile. But hey, that's how Canadian stars are born, right?

PERFECT 10 | COMEDY BAR | 945 BLOOR W | DEC 12 | 1OPM | $12 ADV $15 DOOR

STACKED. Comics like Sandra Battaglini are so talented that even fellow comedians can't stop talking about them. Expect a TON of variety, with Marito Lopez bringing the ruckus while Todd Graham kills them softly.

DAVE MERHEJE & MARK LITTLE | COMEDY BAR | 945 BLOOR W | DECEMBER 20 | 8PM | $10

Dave and Mark are considered 6ix gods in the comedy community, and a show featuring them as the main event is as good as stand-up is going to get. That's going to sound like hyperbole, but these guys are masters at incorporating improvisation into their sets, something you won't see on their film from Just For Laughs and the San Francisco International Comedy Competition.

YUK YUK'S NYE EXTRAVAGANZA | MASSEY HALL | 178 VICTORIA | DEC 31 | 730PM | $39-69

Massey Hall's NYE tradition continues, hosted this year by Shaun Majumder and headlined by Simon Cotter. Mark Breslin, Yuks' owner, has done a great job in diversifying the line-up, including some of Toronto's best like Mark Heath, Darryl Orr, and Keith Pedro.

Beyography classes teach you to dance like Beyonce

$

0

beyographyBeyography is a Beyonce-inspired dance class run by super-fan Nicky Nasrallah. The class began three years ago when Nasrallah started teaching his friend and now assistant, Katherine Wilson, some of Beyonce's moves.

Its popularity exploded this past year, as it's the only place in Toronto offering a Beyonce-style flawless workout.

Classes run three days a week, alternating between Steps Dance Studio and Elevation Dancentre Studio, and are also taught in Hamilton through the Academy of All Things Awesome.

Beyography also offers private Beyonce dance classes (bachelorette party, anyone?), for $25 per person (minimum eight people).

Nasrallah constantly introduces new choreography, teaching over 20 songs on a rotating basis. Since Beyography is intended to cater to everyone, from beginner to Beyonce super-fans, Nasrallah has taught both six year olds and sixty year olds in his class. The class I attended was almost all women, mostly in their twenties and thirties.

I registered for a two-hour Saturday afternoon class for $15, and tried my best to learn the choreography to Beyonce's Sweet Dreams. Nasrallah led us through a warm up in his signature red socks (they make it easier to follow his steps) before we got right down to it.

He did a great job breaking the steps down so even the most beginner dancers could get it, but the music made everything a little more complicated. Most people danced in socks, some wore sneakers, and the fiercest of Sashas broke out their heels at the end of class.

Nasrallah's goal is for everyone to have a good time in the class: he sang along (sometimes with his own lyrics), cracked jokes (he's a seasoned improviser and comedian), and asked if anyone needed clarification or to go over a step again.

Two hours of dancing really adds up, and by the end of class I felt like I'd gone for a five-kilometer run -- in heels. I will definitely be going back, maybe even for the most popular and most complicated choreography, Single Ladies. For now, I'll just hope Sweet Dreams comes on at the bar, so I can show off my new dance moves.

8 must try fried foods in Toronto for Hanukkah 2015

hanukkah torontoHanukkah in Toronto begins tonight. This eight-day-long holiday is a happy one that celebrates the miracle of light (basically, a jug of oil lasted for a week instead of one day). To commemorate it, Jewish people light the menorah and eat fried foods, traditionally, but definitely not limited to, latkes and sufganiyot (donuts).

Here are my picks for must try fried foods in Toronto this Hanukkah.

Sufganiyot
Sufganiyot, or fried jelly donuts, done the right way are better than anything you can get from Tim Hortons. Kosher bakeries like My Zaidy's Bakery in the north end of the city sell out quickly, but these delicious morsels of dough are available elsewhere, including year-round at Fat Pasha.

Un-Chicken and Waffles
Hogtown Vegan is well-known for highly-caloric vegan comfort food. And, a trip to this Bloorcourt eatery isn't complete without a plate of un-chicken and waffles. So, go ahead, indulge in a plate of pillowy waffles topped with deep-fried tofu nuggets.

Buffalo Cauliflower
You'll barely believe these bite-sized balls of deep-fried goodness from Home of the Brave are actually veggies thanks to their beer-battered exterior and generous coating of buffalo sauce and creamy ranch dressing.

Gra Bong
These Thai-style squash fritters are totally addictive thanks to their crunchy shells and seriously flavourful interiors. It's pretty much impossible to eat just one.

Quinoa Onion Rings
Fresh's onion rings are covered in quinoa therefore rendering them a health food. Well, that's what I always tell myself before completely devouring an order (or two).

Vegan Donuts
Apiecalypse Now! serves its iconic Simpsons-style donuts on Fridays and Saturdays only. If you can't get your hands on one, the vegan bakery and pizza joint serves up a variety of treats daily.

Falafel
This is another health food disguising itself as junk thanks to its golden shell. But, falafel balls, like those from Fat Pasha, are great on their own or ensconced in a pita. Either way, you should always eat them with tahina.

Latkes
No Hanukkah-related list would be complete without latkes. Grab a traditional potato pancake from a restaurant like Caplansky's, Free Times Cafe or United Bakers. Or, go the gourmet route and try them topped with creme fraiche, caviar and smoked salmon from People's Eatery.

instagram torontoThe most Instagrammable bakeries in Toronto are some of the sweetest spots in the city - literally. While a few of these places have feed-worthy counters and decor, let's be honest, the real reason you're going is for the tarts, pastries and cakes.

Here are my picks for the most Instagrammable bakeries in Toronto.

The Tempered Room
Is most of your feed filled with nostalgic images of trips to the countryside and shots of the Distillery District? If you answered yes, The Tempered Room will be a welcome addition to your profile. The Parkdale bakery has a decidedly rustic decor, complete with exposed brick walls, a wooden communal table, and fresh flowers. The flaky croissants and fresh eclairs also make for the ideal photo subjects.

instagram torontoMillie Patisserie & Creamery
This popular spot in the Fashion District serves up indulgent French-inspired pastries with an Asian flair. Its layered crepe cakes are definitely the most photogenic, with the matcha infused edition getting regular play on Instagram.

instagram torontoBobbette & Belle
The decor at this bakery with two locations (Leslieville and Yonge and Lawrence) is the perfect balance of modern and rustic chic, boasting crisp white walls, reclaimed wood tables and fresh flowers (basically, it looks like the scene of the most Pinterest-worthy wedding). The delectable macarons and cupcakes don't hurt either.

instagram torontoRoselle Desserts
This Corktown bakery has become renown on Instagram for its beautifully-crafted soft serve but if you look past the ice cream you'll find a ton of cakes and pastries well worth a photo op. The all white decor is ideal for those who are all about a monochrome feed.

instagram torontoNadege Patisserie
If you scroll through Nadege's location tag on Instagram, you'll be treated to an eyeful of Parisian sweets and treats. In fact, their vibrantly coloured macarons and tarts are so stunning you can skip slapping on the Mayfair filter.
