Vancouver pub empire sets its sights on Toronto

belfast love torontoToronto's King West neighbourhood is already saturated with bars and clubs, but it's about to get one more thanks to a West Coast import that's set to move in this spring.

The Donnelly Group is transforming Zoe's Bakery Cafe at 548 King St. W. into Belfast Love, a public house that'll include 40 beer taps as well as a menu by David Gunawan (who's behind Vancouver's famed Farmer's Apprentice). It'll feature "elevated pub food," such as a handmade burgers, pizza and fish and chips.

Despite its Northern Irish name, Belfast Love won't be your typical Irish pub. It'll focus on craft beer from Toronto and Ontario brewers at its three bars, including one on its side patio. Local firm Mason Studio will be responsible for the bar's interior design.

Donnelly Group operating partner Regan Truong says he and his team were impressed with Toronto's vibe when they visited the city. "We thought it would be a great secondary market to jump into."

This restaurant, bar and nightclub conglomerate already has 10 outposts on the West Coast. Some feature shuffleboard courts while others include barbershops on site.

Yet, the Donnelly Group evokes mixed feelings from its existing patrons. Some say it's homogenizing the Vancouver's bar scene while others consider its various locations a welcome addition to the relatively sleepy city - well, sleepy when it comes to late-night entertainment.

And while Belfast Love might be Donnelly's first foray into Toronto, the company already has plans to open up a second public house somewhere in the downtown core this summer.

The top 10 bars with arcade games in Toronto

$

toronto bars arcade gamesBars with arcade games in Toronto are in keeping with the latest trend in Toronto nightlife. The perfect mix of childhood fun (PAC-MAN high scores), the benefits of maturity (getting to drink out in the open), with only a dash of the grim realities of adulthood (having to foot the bill at the end of the night), these bars are the ideal mashup of past and present.

Here are my picks for the top bars with arcade games in Toronto.

Get Well
This Dundas West bar features a great selection of games that includes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Galaga, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Ms PAC-MAN, Tetris, Centipede, Star Wars, Dig Dug, and a couple of pinball machines. Go here if you're looking for a large selection of games and hate waiting your turn.

May
The collection of games at May includes a Hand Eye Society cabinet with six locally-developed games (most popular is Gesundheit, a puzzle game where the user has to go through mazes), Spring, Karate Champ, Q Ball Wizard, foosball, and pool tables. Head here if you're really good at Karate Champ. Word on the street is that if you get your name on the leaderboard, you get a free drink.

Nightowl
Nightowl is a Little Italy go-to for games and upscale pub grub. Its collection is composed of Big Buck Hunter, Whack-a-Mole and more. Choose this spot if you're the designated driver. Though Nightowl serves a host of Toronto-inspired cocktails, they offer free virgin drinks to those who have to get behind the wheel.

Wolf Like Me
This dive bar near Christie Pits boasts a collection of games that includes Big Buck Hunter II and a multi-game console with 60+ games like PAC-MAN and Galaga. Head here if you've powered through the original Big Buck Hunter at all the other bars (seriously, it's incredibly popular) and are ready for the second edition.

Junction City Music Hall
JCMH is an underground music venue that also has an impressive array of arcade games. Here you'll find Super Chexx Bubble Hockey, Galaga, Ms. PAC-MAN, Street Fighter II, WWF Superstars, Bubble Bauble, a 30-in-1 classic arcade game cabinet, and a variety of pinball tables. This is one of the top spots in the city for newer games.

Dundas Video
Dundas Video makes good on its name with a collection of games that features about 500 games like the complete Street Fighter collection, Simpsons Arcade, Turtles in Time, Hit The Ice, Final Fight and more. If you're already obsessed with the overly-priced app, The Simpsons: Tapped Out, and need to express your fandom in a way that is slightly less draining to your bank account.

Apt. 200
This Queen West bar is decked out with fancy decor but keeps a few retro arcade games on hand. Here you'll find Street Fighter, NBA JAM and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Pay a visit if your taste in drinks have matured even if your taste in games haven't.

Hi-Lo Bar
Hi-Lo Bar keeps east-siders entertained with options like Big Buck Hunter, a Kiss-themed pinball machine, and a PAC-MAN flat top with more than 60 games. The flat top is most appreciated for its ability to hold drinks and the allowance for seating.

Blnd Tger
Blnd Tger is a Little Italy lounge that has bottle service but also arcade games. The collection includes Time Crisis 3, PGA Tour Golf Team Challenge, a standup multi-game console with Galaga, PAC-MAN and more. There's also PAC-MAN Pinball. You can dance while you play.

Unlovable
This underground drinking hole boasts a collection that features Star Wars pinball, 80s classics like Donkey Kong, Ms PAC-MAN, 1942 and more, and a multi-game console with approximately 2000 games including all the old Street Fighters.

What did I miss? Add your fave venues for booze-meets-Big Buck Hunter in the comments.

free events torontoThe top free events in Toronto will help you save your pennies for the impending Hallmark holiday. If you've had to dish out some serious cash to buy your bae some fine wine or are fearing an inevitably pricey Sunday dinner, these events will help you get through the week without breaking the bank.

Here's a roundup of free events in Toronto this week.

Dave Bookman's Nu Music Night (Feb. 9)
Get your fill of free music by heading to the Horseshoe Tavern this Tuesday. Morality Players, The Altobeelays and Fires will all be playing sets. If you'd rather take the stage yourself, head to The Tennessee and get in on its open mic night.

XXX Adult Colouring (Feb. 11)
The Gladstone is going all out in the name of Valentine's Day this week. It's crafted a schedule filled with love-centric free events. On Thursday, head to the hotel for an X-rated colouring extravaganza. If that's not your thing, there's also Tinder Tales, Lego + Lagers 4 Lovers and more on tap earlier in the week.

Rec Room Thursdays (Feb. 11)
Want to kick off patio season a little early? The Drake has got your back. Thursday is the hotel's weekly Rec Room night featuring music by DJ Fase. If you dig some change out of your sofa, there's $5 tall cans and Jameson Select Reserve.

DJ Skate Nights: Lula Skate (Feb. 13)
Head to the Harbourfront Centre on the first Saturday of the month for the second to last DJ Skate Night of the season. The music for this week's installment will be brought to you by Lula Lounge's DJ Trambo.

If you can't resist spending while checking out the goods, opt to play a retro video game or catch a movie (they'll be playing all day). valentines day torontoValentines Day events in Toronto will help you celebrate the most loved and loathed holiday of the year. Whether you want to forget the holiday's existence by partying with your S.O. at a warehouse or bask in its glory at a romantic movie, there's more than a few events worth skipping a night of Netflix and chill for.

Here are six ways to celebrate Valentine's Day in Toronto.

Gladstone Love Inn (Feb. 8-15)
The Gladstone has planned a week's worth of love-themed events to get you in the mood. If you want to skip the regular song and dance of prix fixe dinners and sappy rom-coms, head to the hotel for an adult colouring night, Tinder storytelling or Lego and beers instead. Sidebar: all events make great first date options, so feel free to take whoever you swiped right on last night.

Desert Hearts x SumerDaze: City Hearts - Winter is Coming Tour (Feb. 14)
On Sunday, an empty warehouse at Dovercourt and Dupont will be transformed into an entertainment hub filled with art, DJs and food. If smooth jazz and an expensive merlot won't woo your Valentine, there's a good chance this will.

Super Naughty Show (Feb. 12-13)
Looking to spice up your Valentine's Day weekend? On Friday and Saturday the Super Wonder Gallery is hosting its annual Super Naughty Show. The two-day event will fill the Bloorcourt contemporary art space with over 250 erotic paintings and sculptures more interesting than what you see on X-rated sites (maybe).

Lovelution: Valentine's Day Retreat (Feb. 13)
Head to North York for a love-themed warehouse party on V-Day. You and your S.O. can spend the evening practicing yoga, meditating, dancing, painting and partying in what planners describe as a "multi-room love labyrinth." Hosts want everyone to stay the night, so if you want to get frisky (and you're not an exhibitionist) you may want to skip it.

Deep Sea Soiree (Feb. 14)
By now, everyone and their mother knows the the aquarium makes for a great date spot. On V-Day, Ripley's is hosting a 19+ soiree complete with cocktails and a DJ. Bonus: if you and your date don't hit it off (sorry, in advance), the scenery here acts as a reminder that there are plenty of fish in the sea.

His Girl Friday Valentine's Screening (Feb. 14)
If you want to have a shamelessly cheesy Valentine's Day, head to Rainbow Cinemas for a classic movie. His Girl Friday will be playing on the big screen and the theatre will be giving out free chocolates to moviegoers. This option is ideal for those trying to woo their lover on a budget as it's only $6 per couple.

WayHome teases 2016 lineup with 360 videos

$

wayhome 2016Toronto music lovers are channeling Sherlock Holmes as we attempt to unravel a set clues the WayHome Music Festival started releasing this past Thursday.

Instead of posting cryptic images like last year, WayHome uploaded two rather trippy 360° videos to YouTube. Each one comes filled with hints about who might be playing the 2016 festival in Oro-Medonte.

Thanks to its 1990s-esque computer animation, the first video reminds me of the television series Reboot, which fits in well with WayHome's nostalgic (at least for 90s kids) aesthetic. The second one is set in some sort of forest, and it's reminiscent of an early N-64 game.

Toronto-based firm Puncture is behind WayHome's branding, and I must say it's doing a bang-up job drumming excitement for the July 22 to 24 weekend. But this local design studio has created two complex videos, leaving many of us asking: what do they mean?

Wayhome Toronto 2016I'm partial to believe that the "eye" image in the first video means Third Eye Blind.

Wayhome Toronto 2016Does the sign that reads "Canus Lupus March" refer to Wolf Parade?

In the second video, you can see three lawn chairs, which resemble those found on the cover of Haim's Day Are Gone album. Others think the alarm clock showing 12:34 proves that The Arkells are on the lineup.

Naturally, these clues have Twitter buzzing, so here's how others are interpreting them.

Who do you think will be on the lineup? Let us know in the comments.

Toronto is getting a Friends Central Perk coffee shop

central perkSeinfeld fans won't be the only ones having fun this year in Toronto. Former must-see Thursday sitcom Friends will be coming to life in the city later this year too when a Central Perk coffee shop opens on King West.

The replica cafe, inspired by Ross, Rachel and co.'s popular hangout doesn't yet have a confirmed address but the people behind the project are promising a June 24 opening.

Central Perk pop-ups are not new. Ones have surfaced in Manhattan, Sydney and Shanghai in the past year.

The Toronto version is promising a "meticulously detailed" recreation of "the experience of one of the most popular shows of all time." There will be the familiar orange couch, a barista named Gunther, pastries, donuts and coffee.

What else can you expect? How about a sing-a-long to Phoebe's Smelly Cat, Friends scripts, memorabilia, photo ops and music.

Inside Joe Fresh's new Fashion Incubator in Toronto

Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion InnovationLast year, retail giant Joe Fresh shook things up by partnering with Ryerson University to open The Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation, an incubator program that promotes the growth of fashion-oriented startups and the Canadian fashion industry as a whole. A whopping $1 million investment allows it to facilitate up to 21 small businesses over a span of four years.

joe fresh ryersonModeled after the university's award-winning DMZ incubator program and existing as part of their Fashion Zone, the Centre supports entrepreneurs by providing ample workspace and access to startup funds, as well as endless resources, services, mentorship and networking opportunities.

joe fresh ryersonWith the aid of a panel of fashion and business leaders, The Joe Fresh Centre selected six pioneering companies to take under its wings last fall. Though vastly distinct from one another, each innovator shows promise and breaks new ground in their respective spheres.

joe fresh ryersonFor instance, Love Winter is a footwear brand offering Russian Valenki felt boots with removable galoshes for harsh Canadian weather, whereas StyleID is a mobile app that helps customers shop the fashions they see on television.

formen skincareFormen, a men's makeup and skincare line, is a particularly intriguing startup on the current roster. The company focuses on inconspicuous cosmetics and clinical skincare, topped off with clean, consistent branding.

joe fresh ryersonBecause such a product isn't as readily available in the West as it is in countries like South Korea, there's an opportunity for immense growth - especially with the resources offered by the incubator program.

joe fresh ryersonI spoke to Andrew Grella, the brand's founder, who said his next moves include obtaining exclusive rights to the formulas and distributing in Asia's existing men's cosmetics market. Both goals are within close reach as The Joe Fresh Centre offers access to legal services and connections to international department stores.

joe fresh ryersonWhen these entrepreneurs complete the 18-month program, they'll walk away with valuable experiences, refined skills and a whole whack of new connections. Ryerson will also grant them academic certificates as an added bonus.

joe fresh ryersonWhile Joe Fresh's program is certainly not the first of its kind (The Toronto Fashion Incubator has been nurturing young entrepreneurs forever), its dedication to developing small businesses - as well as Canada's fashion industry - is respectable all the same.

joe fresh ryersonThe Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation is now accepting new applications online through February.

Epic party coming to warehouse on Dupont

$
0

dupont warehouseThe old Hamilton Gears warehouse at 950 Dupont St. will soon become Bellwoods Brewery's second location. But not before SummerDaze hosts an epic party at this Toronto-area warehouse.

On Sunday, February 14, SummerDaze party planners Jordana Appugliesi, Nabil Zakaria and Sandra Dalla Giustina will transform the massive warehouse into a Valentine's Day love-fest featuring the California-based DJ crew Desert Hearts.

Enter to win tickets here.

The event is a decade in the making, notes Appugliesi. She and Zakaria have been driving by the warehouse daily; they've dreamed about holding a party there. Though, they never thought it'd happen because it was always filled with boxes.

About one month ago, Appugliesi noticed it was empty and finally secured it for SummerDaze. "We've been manifesting an event at that venue for literally ten years and it's becoming a reality," says Zakaria.

Like all SummerDaze parties, Appugliesi, Zakaria and Dalla Giustina want this one to be an immersive experience with plenty of art, music and food.

Since it's Valentine's Day, they're hosting a six-course candle-lit dinner - suitable for both carnivores and vegans - before the party ($60 or $100 with wine pairings). Although this romantic-sounding meal isn't just for couples. Thankfully, everyone will sit together at one long communal table that'll be situated in the centre of the warehouse.

After supper, Desert Hearts and local DJ collective Dirty Decibels as well as Shea Marie and
Thomas Cardin will entertain the crowd along with circus performers, including aerialists and stilt walkers. Local artists will also be on site and partygoers can grab vegan-friendly snacks all night long.

For the past six years, the SummerDaze team has been hosting events on Sunday afternoons during the summer months. However, about two years ago, they started branching out due to demand.

Tickets for their Valentine's Day party are on sale now and run from $25 to $35. Or, you can try your luck and enter for a chance to win tickets here.

Beyonce coming to Toronto for Formation tour

Beyonce Formation TorontoThe Toronto Beyhive got the news of their dreams last night: Beyonce is returning to Toronto this spring for her just announced Formation World Tour. While Toronto has gotten its fill of Sasha Fierce through events like BEY BEY ALL NIGHT, nothing comes close to the real thing.

Queen B will be taking to the stage at the Rogers Centre on May 25, just a few days after Bieber hits town for the Purpose World Tour (yes, all Toronto pop music lovers will be very broke this season). Though the concert is still months away, I suggest investing in some Beyography classes in preparation.

Tickets go on sale on February 15, but if you're an AMEX card holder you can get in early on the 9th.

blue jays superbowlThe Toronto Blue Jays threw a onesie Super Bowl party last night, proving that they're down to celebrate any and every sporting event. Pitcher Marcus Stroman posted a picture of the team having a good old fashioned onesie party in celebration of football's big night, with players like Aaron Sanchez, Devon Travis and host Jose Bautista wearing their most stylish pyjamas.

Proving that getting suited and booted for the Super Bowl is a waste of time, the team members looked way comfier than Toronto's club denizens. In the pic you can see outfielder Kevin Pillar and hitting guru Bobby Tewksbary repping Superman logos and Chris Colabello and Ryan Goins twinning in matching Darth Vader onesies.

Toronto taxis will protest during NBA All-Star Weekend

toronto taxi protestAt the end of January, Toronto-area taxi drivers threatened to strike some time during the NBA All-Star weekend. Now, it looks likes the United Taxi Workers Association will attempt to disrupt traffic - as early as February 12 - to protest UberX's continued operation in the GTA.

The new United Taxi Workers Association met last night to plan its next steps. And, as the Toronto Star reports, Paul Sekhon, the head of this organization, said that the upcoming protest will be similar to the one that clogged up city streets in December.

Members of Toronto's taxi industry have been trying to shut down UberX, who they say is operating illegally in the city, for more than a year. Last week, city council voted against seeking an immediate injunction against the ride-sharing service.

anti valentines torontoAnti-Valentine's Day events in Toronto cater to singles, bromantic partners and galentines (as well as a few not-so lovey-dovey couples). If you're not into marking the cheesiest holiday of the year with a date night, but still want to do more than cuddle with a pint of Ben & Jerry's, there's plenty going on around the city.

Here are a few alternative ways to celebrate Valentine's Day in Toronto.

Anti-Valentine's Ball (Feb. 13)
The Opera House is hosting an all-out fetish bash to celebrate anti-Valentines. Expect erotic visuals, rope bondage demos, body painting and more. There will also be dungeon play areas if you want to let your freak flag fly.

Thelma and Louise Galentine's Day Screening (Feb. 13)
Spend the 14th with the ultimate OTP: Thelma and Louise. If you haven't found the Jay-Z to your Beyonce, grab your best lady friend and head to Rainbow Cinemas to see Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis do their thing on the big screen.

Anti Valentine's Day Mixer 2016 (Feb. 14)
Valentine's Day is a source of rage for many. If it rubs you the wrong way, Battle Sports has got your back this year. The North York entertainment facility has planned an event for those that love to hate love, complete with a rage room filled with love-themed mugs and vases and archery with cupid targets.

Dark Love Valentine's Day Prix Fixe Dinner (Feb. 14)
Sure, you could make some Winterlicious resos and spend the evening dining between two lovestruck couples, but where's the fun in that? This prix fixe dinner at The Steady is for those who love food more than corny Hallmark swag. Aside from a kickass menu, you'll be treated to tarot readings and live, spooky music (which, in my opinion, is much better than a bouquet of roses, anyway).

Toronto Ladies Learning Code: Valentine's Day Edition (Feb. 14)
Opt out of singles parties and speed dating and get an education instead. Ladies Learning Code is hosting a Valentine's Day HTML & CSS course for all the women who prefer computing to cards and chocolate. Bringing along a galentine is highly encouraged.

Fleshgod Apocalypse (Feb. 14)
There's no better way to say "F you Valentine's Day" than by attending a death metal concert. Instead of kicking it to the smooth sounds of Miles Davis with a pretentious Tinder date, thrash your body around to Fleshgod Apocalypse, Carach Angren, Abigail Williams, and Sacrificed Alliance at the Mod Club.

What did I miss? Add where you'll be turning your nose up at Valentine's Day in the comments.
