Nike unwraps Air Force 1 pop-up shop in Toronto

nike air force 1On Saturday, Livestock's Spadina location opened their doors to reveal a two week Nike pop-up shop worth a gander. Just in time for All-Star weekend, the multi-faceted experience is literally Air Force 1 heaven.

nike air force 1There are light boxes with cloud prints throughout the space and all of the displays - including a 3D Toronto cityscape - are radiant white.

nike air force 1Charming visuals aside, the pop-up celebrates the iconic sneaker's past and present; it highlights the shoe's technical advancements from 1982 onwards while also featuring the newest, lightest Air Force 1 Ultra Flyknit.

nike air force 1Available in many different colourways for both men and women at $235, the sneaker weighs 50% less than the very first model while remaining true to its original design aesthetic.

nike air force 1As for the archive of AF1s sure to make a sneakerhead's brain explode, samples straight from the vaults at Nike HQ are chronologically displayed alongside anecdotes on material, silhouette and tech updates.

nike air force 1Among the dozens of shoes are the steel toe'd S.W.A.T. Hi's, Rasheed Wallace Sheedmans, Ricardo Tisci collabs and my personal favourite: the ACRONYM Lunar Force 1's with the zippered side panel.

nike air force 1The pop-up shop will run until February 21 and is open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily.

Raptor Terrence Ross surprises Toronto shoppers

terrence rossQueen West shoppers were pleasantly surprised this Saturday when Toronto Raptor Terrence Ross showed up at a coffee and clothing shop to play the role of personal shopper for a few hours.

The shooting guard held a playful meet-and-greet at Frank and Oak, offering customers his style tips and even guiding them to land three mini basketballs in a basket (he's as savvy with fashion as he is with basketball, as is evident on his crazy-popular Instagram).

Although the whole thing didn't seem as impromptu as it was probably meant to, and in fact was pretty obviously a promotional set-up, Ross - who lives just down the street from the shop - was genuinely excited about the chance to hang out with fans.

terrence rossHe signed jerseys, posed for about a million selfies and even let a few of his younger fans win in a mini shooting drill.

I expect this is just the first of many NBA star appearances to pop up throughout the city in the coming week.

terrence rossAs NBA All-Star Weekend approaches this Friday, Toronto is bracing itself for an onslaught of events and opportunities to interact with their favourite players.

The NBA is taking over Toronto's Thompson Hotel

nba thompson hotelBasketball's biggest stars will descend upon Toronto for the NBA All-Star weekend. And they'll be holing up at the Thompson Hotel.

The National Basketball Player's Association (NBPA) has rented out the entire hotel for this high-profile event, happening between February 12 and 14.

Along with bringing in nine HD TVs for a 60 square-foot media wall, the Thompson will treat players to poutine and peameal bacon sandwiches, both of which will be available at the 24-hour Thompson Diner. As for drinks, the hotel will be stocking up on bottles of Louis XIII cognac, which usually retail for $6,500 on site.

To outfit the stars in their downtime, the hotel at Bathurst and Wellington will offer XXXXXL bathrobes and oversized slippers.

It won't, however be easy to get a peek at the stars. If you're hoping to get on the Thompson's famous rooftop bar this weekend, you may be out of luck because the hotel's ramping up security ahead of the NBA-related festivities.

Correction: An earlier version of this post stated that the NBA had rented the hotel for all of its players, when in fact it's the NBPA who is putting some players up for the weekend.

Monster condo complex planned for Corktown

48 Power CondoToronto may be obsessed with building soaring towers, but there's more than one way to develop a huge condo complex. Case in point: Great Gulf's latest plans for its site at Adelaide and Power streets is a sprawling complex that reaches 22-storeys high.

48 Power CondoThat's not a particularly tall building these days, though the projected number of units here comes in at a whopping 532. Originally much smaller in stature, the developer has dramatically increased the scale of this project after securing all of the properties on the block.

48 Power CondoLocated at the end of the Richmond exit from the southbound DVP, the site is prime for redevelopment. Plans call for retail and restaurant space at grade, which would certainly work well here. The renderings also show the creation of public space beside Orphan's Glen, though it's not yet clear whether this will be part of the final plans.

48 Power CondoIn fact, it's not yet clear whether any of this will come to pass in the form of CORE Architects' designs. While the height is clipped at 22-storeys, the size of the project is subject to review by city and could change if the scale is deemed too great.

There's little doubt that this area could benefit from the injection of life that a development like this promises, but it remains to be seen if the scale is too ambitious.

354 Harbord Street354B Harbord Street is a three bedroom urban townhouse just east of Ossington. This modern abode in the new Oben Flats is priced at $1.3 million, and brings modern architecture to the west side of the Harbord.

Constructed on the site of a former gas station, the initial project by Toronto's Superkul Architects was a collection of upscale rental buildings spread across four neighbourhoods including St. Clair West, Leslieville and Castlefield District. The project, now freehold townhomes instead of rentals, features six family-sized units ("flats") that don't quite live up to their European-inspired namesake.

354 Harbord StreetNonetheless, the homes make good use of their open layout and feature nice finishing touches like Scavolini kitchens and striking wooden staircases. While 354B Harbord doesn't exude the same extravagant love nest say likeConrad Black's $21M mansion, this chic property is cozy and charming at 2,000 square feet.

345 Harbord StreetNOTABLE FEATURES

  • Approx. 2,000 square feet
  • Three-storeys
  • Scavolini kitchen

Avid cyclists. Harbord is a major commuter artery for cyclists. The bike lane at your doorstep travels from Ossington all the way to Queen's Park, with mandatory caffeine and bakery stops at Sam James and Harbord Bakery along the route.

The townhouse complex is directly on Harbord where street parking is limited and traffic is heavy. Outdoor space is, like most townhouses, limited (though the upper deck is quite nice). This is not the type of place for someone who has always dreamed of mowing his own lawn.

WayHome reveals its 2016 lineup

wayhomeWayHome finally released its lineup today, announcing LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire and The Killers as its 2016 headliners, along with HAIM, M83, Chvrches and Major Lazer.

WayHomies who spent all weekend working out the festival's 360° video clues actually have excellent sleuthing skills.

These amateur detectives accurately predicted that bands such as Wolf Parade, Glass Animals, Third Eye Blind, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats and Matt and Kim would be playing some time over the July 22 to 24 weekend.

Organizer also confirmed numerous local acts such as Stars, The Arkells, Shad, Dilly Dally, Young Empries and BadBadNotGood. Many (including this writer) will be excited to see FKA twigs, Chet Faker, Beirut, Future and Mac DeMarco on the roster.

Overall, this crop of artists seems pared down in comparison to last year's inaugural fest - I mean, how can you compete with Neil Young and Kendrick Lamar? However, this lineup may end up fitting in well with WayHome's relatively laid back vibe.

Despite the lack of Radiohead (hey, Osheaga), this burgeoning musical extravaganza in Oro-Medonte looks like it won't disappoint as it returns for its second edition.

SNKRS XPRESSHop aboard the SNKRS XPRESS that's rolling its way into Toronto for the NBA All-Star weekend.

To celebrate basketball and the new Jordan Brand Store at 306 Yonge St., Nike is transforming a TTC streetcar into a bona fide sneaker boutique for Nike+ members.

Nike says the SNKRS XPRESS station will be located at 277 Queen St. W. And, you can book your spot on this souped-up streetcar from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. between February 11 to 14.

According to Nike, this mobile shop will offer, "a curated selection of footwear including the Nike Air Force 1 Flyknit, Air Jordan XXX, Jordan Cement IV, Kobe 11 Royalty and several surprise drops." Toronto Maple Leafs trade Dion Phaneuf to Ottawa

$

dion phaneuf tradeThe Toronto Maple Leafs have parted ways with captain Dion Phaneuf in a blockbuster nine player trade with the Ottawa Senators. Here's the breakdown of the trade: the Senators acquired Phaneuf, Matt Fratin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and Cody Donaghey in exchange for Jared Cowen, Colin Greening, Milan Michalek, Tobias Lindberg, and a 2nd round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Trades of this magnitude are exceedingly rare in today's NHL. Based on their complexity, it's also difficult to forecast which team got the better end of the deal. In Toronto's case, the key to the trade was divesting itself of Phaneuf's long term contract (five years remaining at $7 million per) while also acquiring prospects in Lindberg and the 2nd round pick.

The Leafs also get a proven NHL defenceman in the form of Cowen, though he doesn't quite replace what Phaneuf brought to the table. In other words, it will take a very long time to determine who won this trade. More than anything, though, the Leafs now have even more salary cap room to rebuild the franchise under the guidance of GM Lou Lamoriello.

Interestingly, Phaneuf was in the midst of cobbling together quite a good season under Mike Babcock. That quality of play probably signed his ticket out of Toronto.

What do you think of the trade? Let us know in the comments.

My Market Bakery closes after employee accusations

my market bakeryIf you're looking for fresh bread in Kensington Market, you won't be able to get any at My Market Bakery. That's because the store at 184 Baldwin St. abruptly shut down last week.

This isn't altogether surprising, considering some former employees accused owner Gary Rogers of not paying them part of their wages.

Now, as Global writes, Rogers's landlord - as well as another vendor - allege they're owed money as well.

This isn't the first Kensington Market business to close under these circumstance. In July, The Grilled Cheese shut down after four employees claimed they weren't getting paid in full.

Another morning of commuter chaos on the TTC

ttcLike many Torontonians, I'm still recovering from my morning commute. I knew it was destined to be disastrous after seeing @TTCnotices tweet out: "Trains turning back at Bloor and Lawrence Stns on Line 1 (YU) due to a fire investigation at Davisville Stn. Shuttle buses en route," before 7:30 a.m.

Even after that delay cleared, trains filled up around York Mills and the situation only got worse down the line. "People, this is my sixth train, I'm getting on this one," one woman shouted at Bloor Station.

According to CBC News, the TTC announced that trains were delayed by more than 30 minutes, leaving many, including the friend I was traveling with, late for work and early morning meetings.

Along with the fire at Davisville Station, there were three passenger emergency alarms before 10 a.m. Here's how Toronto reacted:

Interestingly, however, Premier Kathleen Wynne floated the idea of using the much-maligned Union-Pearson Express as a downtown relief line. As CBC reports, Wynne knows Toronto desperately requires transit alternatives and Metrolinx needs to find a way to get more people riding the UPX train.

Sextant is Toronto's newest craft brewery

Toronto Sextant Craft BreweryIt's easy to drink local in Toronto-area bars and restaurants thanks to the numerous entrepreneurial brewing enthusiasts who are building up our city's craft beer scene. Now, husband and wife team Dave Wingfelder and Cindy Eveline are joining the ranks with Sextant Craft Brewery.

Wingfelder and Eveline named their business after an old navigational tool, which explorers relied on during their travels.

"Just as old world explorers and navigators relied on their sextants and looked to the stars as set out on their journeys, Sextant Craft Brewery wants to take the Toronto beer drinker on their own adventure by exploring the 'New World' of premium craft beer," they write in a news release.

Sextant is currently a contract brewery that's serving up a Pale Ale - you can try it at the Cloak & Dagger on College Street. Eveline and Wingfeld hope to introduce a Blonde Ale and an India Session Ale some time this summer.

They're also planning to open up a 20 hectolitre brewery somewhere on Toronto's west side.

Sprawling Dupont Street condo project resurfaces

840 Dupont condoJust over two years ago, plans for a sprawling condo complex at Dupont and Shaw made waves. The proposed 393 units and 734 parking spaces at the Sobey's grocery store site was cause for concern from neighbourhood residents and city planners.

As Urban Toronto reports, one of the major issues with the site is that it's zoned as an Employment Area. The city is often resistant to grant re-zoning applications of formerly industrial lands, though this proposal could stand a good chance based on the current usage of the site (retail) and the plan to seek a Mixed Use designation, which would retain the existing commercial activity here.

840 Dupont condoThe project has been considerably revamped since it first surfaced in 2013. Gone is the two-tower design, replaced with a more modern-looking stacked building that recedes from Dupont St. (courtesy of Turner Fleischer) Both proposals attempt to keep the street-side scale of the building in check by having ground-level retail front the development.

840 Dupont condoThe proposed number of units and parking spots have been reduced to 364 and 653, which is only a modest alteration from the earlier proposal. It's certainly still the early days for this new plan, as the new rezoning application has only recently been submitted to the city, but the idea of using this suburban-looking site for increased density clearly has staying power.

This set of plans looks far nicer than the last, but there will be a number of questions posed about the proposal in the coming months, not the least of which is whether or not this section of Dupont St. can handle the increased traffic promised by the development.

What do you think of the new designs? Let us know in the comments.
