Sam the Record Man sign almost ready for new debut

Sam the Record ManToronto's famous Sam the Record Man sign may soon return to the Yonge-Dundas area. That's because Ryerson University is finally looking for a company to reinstall it atop a building at 277 Victoria St, reports the Toronto Star.

Many feared for the dazzling neon sign after Ryerson bought up the former Sam the Record Man store at 347 Yonge St - the site of the school's new Student Learning Centre.

Originally, Ryerson was going to have to reinstall the sign at its original location, but the school thought it'd clash with the SLC's design. In 2014, city council voted to remount it at 277 Victoria above Yonge-Dundas Square.

The sign has been sitting in a storage facility since it was dismantled. Ryerson has agreed to pay to restore, remount and maintain the sign, but the process has dragged out since an agreement was made to install it above the city's most tourist-friendly intersection.

News that Ryerson is soliciting bids to re-install the sign is the first indication that the plan is still in the works. So while no timeline has been given, it's nice to see the wheels records in motion.

The Best Gastropubs in Toronto

Gastropubs TorontoThe best gastropubs in Toronto are cozy and casual places to find great beers and elevated fare that'll generally put standard issue pub grub (wings, nachos and whatnot) to shame.

Despite the annoying nominology -- gastro-what? -- these are places are worth highlighting because their menus deal in the classics: Scotch eggs, steak pies, roast dinners, you know, comfort foods that go great with beer and that typically won't break the bank.

These are the best gastropubs in Toronto.

Drake teases new album with Yonge-Dundas billboard

Drake views billboardDrake fans rejoiced last night when @champagnepapi instagrammed a giant billboard of what might be his Views From the 6 album art. The ad in question can be seen at the corner of Yonge and Dundas and has been unveiled just in time for NBA All-Star Weekend.

This is the largest of a few clues that Drake has left around Toronto pointing to the album's release - several more can be spotted Billy Bishop right now. And don't forget the other mysterious billboard teaser from the fall.

Though it's rumoured that Drizzy's newest project will drop April 6th -- that's 4/16, if you needed another reminder that Drake hails from our great city -- this recent unveiling has many a fan hoping that he bumps the date up to some time in the next few days.

If you need your new Drake fix before the drop, you're stuck listening to Summer Sixteen on repeat.

Toronto taxi protest may block the Gardiner on Friday

taxi portest torontoIt's going to be a busy weekend in Toronto with the NBA All-Star festivities and the Auto Show happening in the city's downtown core.

You may have a little trouble getting around, however, because Toronto-area taxi drivers are planning to protest against UberX starting Friday, February 12 during the post-work rush hour.

As CTV New reports today, the United Taxi Workers Association plans to start its protest down Highway 27 and Highway 427.

The taxi procession will then head east along the Gardiner Expressway towards the York/Bay exit and the Air Canada Centre, where drivers will circle the stadium.

Yesterday, Beck Taxi's president Gail Beck-Souter urged drivers not to join the protest. The cab company made a similar effort to quash the December 9 strike as well.

And today, according to CP24, the unrelated Toronto Taxi Alliance said it would seek a court injunction to shut down UberX in Toronto.

Toronto yoga studio's closure causes Twitter storm

YogabeBad karma? That's what some are saying about Toronto's YogaBe studio after it suddenly shut down yesterday, leaving many dedicated customers in the lurch.

Besides ceasing operations, YogaBe, which was formerly (and conveniently) located in the PATH, announced it wouldn't offer refunds to those who already purchased memberships or passes. We reached out to the studio for comment, but at publication time, we've yet to hear back.

Many took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

Luckily, the Vancouver-based YYoga jumped on the opportunity and started offering free passes to those left with a yoga studio membership, but no place to go.

UPDATE:
YogaBe's owner Laura Baron Kastner replied to our request for comment. "Closing a business is not a happy time for anyone. Most of all I have been concerned about our members, the YogaBe community which we built -- they as much as anything were YogaBe," she said, via email.

"And because I know they feel the loss as greatly as I, who literally have invested everything in this, I am currently working out arrangements with other area fitness and wellness providers to help these people find a new yoga home, and hopefully honour, in some way, their existing arrangements with us."

Celebrities in Toronto for NBA All-Star Weekend

$

toronto nba all starNBA All-Star Weekend will bring more than just athletes to Toronto for the upcoming festivities. Though we don't know everyone coming to town this weekend, the confirmed appearances include some big, red carpet-worthy names.

While they may not all be sportsmen by trade, many an A-lister is hitting the court for the All-Star Celebrity Game at Ricoh Coliseum on Friday. Our resident 6 God (Drake) will be directing the plays of Steve Nash, José Bautista, Stephan James, Win Butler, The Property Brothers, Milos Raonic, Tracy McGrady, Rick Fox and Tammy Sutton-Brown.

The opposing team, helmed by Kevin Hart, will feature Jason Sudeikis, Anthony Anderson, Joel David Moore, Nick Cannon, Chauncey Billups, Muggsy Bogues, Marc Lasry and Elena Delle Donne.

If you couldn't get tickets to the game (join the club), there are more than a few notable musical artists touching down in the 6 this weekend. Snoop Dogg (AKA DJ Snoopadelic), Gwen Stefani, Usher, Fabolous, Travis Scott, A-Trak, Kardinal Offishall, Sting, Girl Talk, 2 Chainz, Future and A$AP Ferg (just to name a few) will be making appearances at games and/or club events.

If you're up on your Kardashian drama, you probably know the names Amber Rose and Blac Chyna. The two personalities are joining forces for a club event Friday, and Amber will be hitting up NEST on Saturday.

Dave Chappelle is also in town - but not for any NBA-related shenanigans. He's extended his stay in Toronto to do additional shows at the Danforth Music Hall over the weekend.

Who will you be star-stalking? Let us know in the comments.

Toronto taxi strike called off for NBA All-Star weekend

Toronto taxi strikeToronto taxi drivers won't strike during NBA All-Star weekend after all, announced United Taxi Workers Association head Paul Sekhon at a news conference this afternoon.

Members of the United Taxi Workers Association met with a group of city councillors earlier today, and despite plans to block the Gardiner Expressway and circle the Air Canada Centre on Friday, local cab drivers will instead work to help all of us - locals and visitors alike - travel safely over this very busy weekend.

Some councillors, including Kristyn Wong-Tam agreed today that UberX is operating illegally in Toronto. Last week, however, city council voted against seeking an immediate court injunction against the ride-sharing service.

Nike wants everyone to know about its secret Toronto loft

Nike ID loft TorontoYesterday, the NikeID Loft (née Nike Loft or Nike Running Loft) on Richmond Street unveiled a whole whack of in-your-face renovations. Previously used as the meeting point for Nike's running club, the loft looked like an anonymous office building and bore a rather barren interior in order to accommodate groups of up to 120 runners.

If you ever visited the formerly inconspicuous space, there's no way you'd recognize it now.

Nike ID loft TorontoThe building is now decked in neon lights, including massive signage on its facade. Inside, every wall is decorated with bold graphics, Toronto-themed installations, portraits of Kobe and/or Lebron, or all of the above. Court lines are painted on the hardwood floors to keep up the loft's basketball-inspired design details.

Nike ID loft Toronto"Vibrant" doesn't even begin to describe the ambience here.

Nike ID loft TorontoMeant to focus on NikeID's almost-endless customization options, the space boasts multiple stations where customers can design their own kicks. An upper floor (enveloped with rose gold walls and floors, no less) offers SNKR Services by Jason Markk so you can get your shoes cleaned and winterized on an elevated throne. Plenty of plebeian seating is also available in case you just want to chill (lol).

Nike ID loft TorontoThis rather significant weekend, the NikeID Loft is open to the public either by walk-in or 1-on-1 appointment with a design specialist. Exclusive colour schemes, colour-shift material options and iconic silhouettes are available for a limited time. More information can be found on Nike News.

Get ready for a ton of TTC subway closures

ttc subway closures 2016TTC subway closures are about to become a very common thing in 2016. There's been a bit of a reprieve to start the year, but as was the case in the late fall, scheduled shut downs of both Line 1 and 2 are about to ramp up. In fact, starting in April there will be a closure of some kind seven weeks in a row.

The words "shuttle bus" will become uncomfortably familiar in the coming weeks. But, as painful as it will be to get around the affected areas during the closures, the work is necessary to update aging infrastructure and to install the system required for automatic train control. The TTC just can't get all of this work done at the conclusion of service each night.

Here's a list of scheduled closures the TTC has just released. Head over to the TTC website for detailed information regarding each shut down.

Wine to be sold at Toronto supermarkets later this year

$
0
0

wine toronto supermarketAt the tail end of 2015, we saw beer appear in Toronto-area grocery stores. Now, as the Toronto Star reports today, wine will also be making its way to supermarket shelves - though don't expect to conveniently pick up a bottle until later this fall.

As the Toronto Star notes, 70 grocery stores will likely sell wine later this year. The province of Ontario will make an official announcement at the end of the month, but stores should soon be able to bid for these wine distribution licences.

Out of the 70 licences available, 35 will restrict retailers to selling only Ontario wines; the other 35 will be unrestricted. This is smart move to put the focus on locally made wines, with the focus intended to be on VQA products rather than "International Cellars" plonk that many existing Ontario wine shops offer in large quantities.

And after three years, all of the licences will enable stores to stock both local and internationally produced products.

The province plans to bring wine to 150 supermarkets by 2019. The number of licences will not, however, be capped. Unlike beer sales (which is allowed for 450 stores), the idea will be to respond to consumer demand in issuing licences to sell wine.

What do you think of the plan's protectionist measures? Let us know in the comments.

Nelly Furtado & Ne-Yo singing at NBA All-Star Game

Nelly FurtadoNBA All-Star Weekend is going to be a star-studded affair, and for celeb-hungry Torontonians it just got a little bit sweeter.

It's just been announced that Nelly Furtado and Ne-Yo will be performing the national anthems of the Canada and U.S. (respectively) at the big game on Sunday. Unfortunately, there's no word that they'll be singing Promiscuous or So Sick (but we can always hope it happens).

If that's not enough to make you to envy the people who managed to snag tickets, remember that Cirque du Soleil is opening the event and Sting will be belting out his hits at the half-time show.

In other celeb-related news, Walk the Moon will be performing at the State Farm All-Star Saturday Night.

nba all star weekend toronto last callNBA All-Star Weekend, as we all know by now, hits Toronto this Friday. With parties galore, the AGCO has done us a favour by extending last call to 4 a.m. at some of the more popular destinations. Thus far, nine places have been given the pleasure, but fingers crossed that more will be approved by tomorrow (in which case, we'll update this post).

These are your options for late night boozing during NBA All-Star Weekend in Toronto.

One important note: this list reflects those bars that have been granted the right to sell alcohol until 4am. They don't have to exercise that right, so always call ahead.

This is what riding Nike's streetcar shoe store is like

$

Nike SNKRS XPRESSAs part of NBA All-Star weekend's many festivities, Nike and Jordan completely transformed a TTC streetcar into the ultimate destination for first access to the newest footwear releases. Having taken a trip on this thing yesterday, I can assure you the entire experience is forward-thinking from the futuristic decor to the innovative technologies.

Toronto sneakerheads will no doubt lose their sh*t.

Nike SNKRS XPRESSBeginning at a check-in and lounge at 277 Queen Street West, the adventure starts in an atmospheric room illuminated by glowing basketballs, bumping intense music. Archival samples from the vaults at Nike HQ are on display alongside new releases like the Air Force 1 Ultra Flyknit and Air Jordan XXX. Just like the NikeID Loft, a Jason Markk station offers shoe cleaning while you wait for your ride.

Nike SNKRS XPRESSOnce the streetcar arrives, your ticket gets punched by an attendant and you're free to hop on. Stepping onto to the SNKRS XPRESS is what I imagine entering a (high end) wooden spaceship feels like. The walls and windows are lined with birch, rose gold and marble paneling; the whole ceiling is covered with mirrors.

Nike SNKRS XPRESSYou're directed to your assigned leather seat and instructed to pop on a pair of headphones and watch an intro video reminiscent of in-flight safety (except it's presented by a cartoon basketball player and tells you how to buy cool new kicks instead of how to avoid death).

Nike SNKRS XPRESSAt this point, you can scroll through Nike and Jordan's newly released sneakers (including several surprise drops that change every day!) and swipe your credit card if something tickles your fancy. For the rest of the 20-minute ride, you can play games (like basketball trivia or virtual hoops) or waltz towards the back end of the streetcar to gawk at more iconic shoes of Nike's past.

Nike SNKRS XPRESSThe drop-off location is a second space at Peter Street that's just as ambient and smells like fresh kicks, probably because it's where they store all the shoes. Finally, you can pick up your new purchase(s) and head out feeling really special that you're one of the first to snag these designs.

Nike SNKRS XPRESSThe SNKRS XPRESS is open to the public (via Nike+ membership) by appointment only, although I think all the spaces are are filled at this point. Kudos to you if you managed to book one earlier this week!
