The top 10 dance music festivals in Toronto for 2016

$

dance music festivals torontoDance music festivals in and around Toronto this year are more diverse than ever before. From the more laid back Electric Island and quirky Bestival, to the all-out production that is Veld, there's an electronic music event for just about everyone. Whether you're looking for a huge lineup, a camping getaway, or something experimental, this is a big summer for EDM fans.

Here are my picks for the top dance music festivals in and around Toronto this year.

Electric Island (May 23, July 1, August 1, September 4-5)
With dates set for every long weekend of spring/summer 2016, Electric Island brings the party to Hanlan's Point. Individual lineups haven't yet been announced but Jamie Jones, Nicole Moudaber, and Get Real are all set to perform over the course of the summer.

Ever After Music Festival (June 4-5)
Borrowing a psychedelic fantasy vibe from Tomorrowland, the second-year festival in Kitchener features a solid lineup including Adventure Club, Zedd, RL Grime, Dillon Francis, Toronto-favourite Rezz, and more. Attendees can book a campsite or a four-person cabin.

Unsound Toronto (June 10-11)
Part of Luminato's 10-year anniversary, Unsound promises a unique experience at the Hearn Generating Station. The industrial setting is a perfect fit for headliners sunn o))) and Tim Hecker. Each night runs from 9:00 PM to 3:00 AM, making it the city's latest running festival, with tickets selling separately for $25 apiece.

Bestival (June 11-12)
Rob Da Bank's UK export returns for its second year in Toronto, this time ditching the ferry to the Island for the 501 Queen car to Woodbine Park. The lineup includes Porter Robinson, Jamie XX, ODESZA, Grimes, Tchami, Malaa and more. Expect to see the inflatable church, as well as a costume party and parade.

Digital Dreams (July 2-3)
Set for Canada Day long weekend, Digital Dream's fifth year should meet EDM fans' expectations after booking Armin Van Buuren, Knife Party, Bassnectar, Above & Beyond, Axwell & Ingrosso and many more to play the Flats at the Molson Amp. Fingers crossed for good weather.

Electric Eclectics (July 29-31)
Meaford is the setting for three days of experimental music and sound art. The lineup will be announced in April, and for $65 you can buy yourself three days and nights of music and camping at the Funny Farm, complete with some of the best sunsets you'll ever see.

Veld (July 30-31)
Consistently one of the biggest EDM events of the summer, Veld is once again slated for the Simcoe Day long weekend. The lineup does not disappoint, with Flume, Deadmau5, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, and Kygo among the headliners. As per usual, there are also some hip-hop acts booked to offer some variety in the form of Travis Scott and Post Malone.

Zeds Dead presents Deadbeats (August 12)
Toronto-based Zeds Dead recently announced their label Deadbeats along with a new showcase this summer at Echo Beach. Other than the date and location, the event remains somewhat of a mystery, but with tickets starting at $20, fans of the hometown heroes are sure to jump on board before the special guests are revealed.

TIME Festival (Mid August)
Although the official date has yet to be set, TIME Fest's recent social media activity suggests an upcoming lineup announcement. The one-day festival is expected in mid-August, and you can expect the early-bird passes to be around $25 if the last two years are any indication.

Mad Decent Block Party (Late August)
After expanding the MDBP festival internationally in India this past February, Diplo is sure to bring the popular all-ages event back to North America this summer. The huge roster of artists results in different lineups depending on the city, but fans of Mad Decent can be sure Diplo or Major Lazer will perform at every date.

What festivals did I miss? Add your suggestions to the comments.

Toronto Raptors Fan ZoneIf you can't score tickets to a Toronto Raptors game, don't fret because the Fan Zone (or Jurassic Park) will return for the upcoming NBA playoffs, which start on Saturday, April 16.

Located in front of the Air Canada Centre at Maple Leaf Square, the Fan Zone will be open for both home and away games starting two hours before tip-off. Along with screening the on-court action, the We The North parties will feature live DJs, contests and giveaways.

And if you can't make it downtown, a number of Cineplex movie theatres - including Cineplex Cinemas Scarborough, SilverCity Newmarket and Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan - will be screening Raptors playoff games. It will cost $6 to watch a game on the big screen but Cineplex is also promising giveaways.

Not sure what to expect in the Fan Zone? Here's what the scene looked like last year.

Toronto doubles the size of bike share program

bike share torontoIf you're looking to bike around Toronto, but don't want to invest in a Cervélo, you'll soon be able to cycle through the city with ease thanks to our souped-up bike-sharing system.

As CBC News reports today, the Toronto Parking Authority will now use PBSC Urban Solutions to bring 1,000 new bicycles and 120 new stations to the city this year, more than doubling the number of bikes that are currently available.

Cities such as Montreal, New York and London already use PBSC Urban Solutions for their rather extensive bike-sharing programs.

The city announced it'd be expanding its bike-sharing system last year, and now it's looking like this is finally coming to fruition.

Internet darling commits to major King St. development

King Portland Centre TorontoWhen the King Portland Centre is complete, it'll give Toronto's King West neighbourhood a makeover. And the RioCan and Allied Properties REIT project looks like it's one step closer to reality now that it has an anchor tenant: Canadian internet darling Shopify Inc.

As the Canadian Press reports, Shopify will lease 112,000 square-feet of space at the King Portland Centre

Shopify, the popular e-commerce platform company that went public last year, is headquartered in Ottawa, but its current Toronto office at Adelaide and Spadina is already drool-worthy thanks to its recreation area (featuring ping pong tables) and spacious open-concept kitchen.

When it opens some time in 2019, the King Portland Centre, designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, will include 12 storeys for offices and 15 for residential units. It'll also feature expansive pedestrian walkways.

Toronto will finally get warm spring weather this week

weather torontoIf you're tired of snow, slush and sleet in Toronto, take a look at the weather forecast for the rest of this week. While tomorrow and Wednesday will still be chilly, Environment Canada is predicting it'll be balmy this weekend - think temperatures around 16 to 18 C on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Let's hope we can finally put our parkas away for good this time because winter has dragged on for far too long.

And if the forecast rings true, you can expect lots of Torontonians to flock to the city's various patios. If drinking in the sweet, sweet sunshine isn't for you, you can always take a hike or pack a picnic to enjoy in your local park or green space.

How will you enjoy the spring weather in Toronto? Let us know in the comments.

Map charts Toronto rent by TTC subway stop

$

toronto rent map ttcEver wondered what the cheapest neighbourhood for rent is near the subway line? This new subway/rent map of Toronto (high res version here) should help apartment hunters narrow their search.

Compiled by Sky View Suites, the overview of rental rates in this city is adequately scary, though the numbers are inflated due to what I might call a condo bias. By prioritizing these units in the composition of the map, the prices per stop tend to be higher than what you'd get if you factored in basement and bachelor units in sub-divided residential homes.

In other words, it's best to take these numbers with a grain of salt. It's better to use this map to track the way that rental rates shift from stop to stop than it is as a guide to the cost of renting in general. The average price of a one-bedroom at Lawrence West, for instance, is high at $1,300. Yet, it's interesting to note that Dufferin and Lansdowne stations are ranked the same.

I'm not sure that there are any major surprises here in terms of trends, but it's an exercise that's sure to pique some curiosity. Read it and weep, Toronto.

Here's what you missed at Toronto's second-ever Curryfest.

blue jays logoWith the baseball season now upon us, it's fair to say that Toronto's caught another bout of Blue Jays fever. We also have a thingforraccoons in this city. Now, one artist is bringing our two obsessions together in a parody logo, which I recently spotted at La Carnita John Street.

Yes, the local taco mini-chain partnered with visual artist Rob Collinet and it's now giving out 2,000 small prints of his re-imagined Jays logo to dinner-time customers.

La Carnita John Street still has plenty of prints to give away if you're looking to get your paws on one. Collinet is also selling them for $15 via online retailer Society 6.

What do you think of Collinet's logo? Let us know in the comments.

April was officially snowiest month in Toronto this year

april snow torontoWarm spring weather might be on the horizon in Toronto, but for now, it still feels very much like winter outside. It should come as no surprise then that the Weather Network confirmed April as the snowiest month of this cold weather season.

We've seen 20.3 centimetres of snow so far this month - that's more than double the amount we got in December 2015 (3.2 centimetres) and January 2016 (10.6 centimetres) combined.

Back in 1979, Toronto saw a whopping 25.8 centimetres of snow accumulate during the month of April. Though we're about centimetres away from beating that record, let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.
