This photo series celebrates Toronto's corner stores

toronto convenience storesToronto's convenience stores are so ubiquitous you hardly even notice them. Sure, you might have the occasional bit of banter with the clerk as you buy milk, but as a rule, the store itself is entirely forgettable. And yet, there's a messy urbanism to these places that makes us feel at home.

Like most examples of vernacular architecture, corner stores are crucial to our sense of place even as we take them for granted. This steady tension has defined their place on the streetscape for over a century. But if you take a moment to stop and really look at these independent business, it's hard to appreciate the unique contribution they make to urban life.

toronto convenience storesIt's precisely the last point that photographer Derek Attewell hopes to draw attention to with a new photo series called Convenience TO. Following in the footsteps of Patrick Cummins, this series documents the humble Toronto variety store in the hopes that we'll pay heed to its "unique and odd aesthetic."

toronto convenience stores"I find them fascinating," he explains. "While each is completely unique, as a whole they somehow form a consistent aesthetic... The project isn't meant to rate the stores or provide detailed information about them. The focus is on the visual appeal of the often run-down storefronts."

toronto convenience storesAttewell has captured 60 stores so far in his series, but has plans to increase that number dramatically as he broadens his geographic range to the north and east. One day the series might become a coffee table-style book, but for now the focus is on shooting. In the meantime, you can follow along on his journey via Facebook and Instagram.

There's a massive Game of Thrones maze near Toronto

game of thrones corn mazeIt might feel like summer right now in Toronto, but winter is definitely coming. And now you can celebrate the fall harvest (and the best season of the year) at an elaborate corn maze located just outside the city. And unlike your run-of-mill mazes, this one has an awesome theme.

That's right, the 10-acre corn maze at Cooper's CSA Farm & Maze near Uxbridge features a delightful Game of Thrones motif. The massive field resembles a castle and it's filled with sigils from House Stark, House Targaryen and House Lannister.

Fittingly, it looks like it's filled with twists and turns more confusing than the book and television series, but you can attempt to make your way through it for $9 every weekend this month, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

While you're visiting Cooper's, you can also pick-your-own pumpkin, take a wagon ride and visit the farmhouse kitchen.

Monster condo towers planned for Yonge and College

yonge carlton condos torontoThe pace at which gigantic condo projects are being proposed in Toronto is downright dizzying. A few days ago, a 32 storey twin tower proposal at King and Parliament made waves, but also in the works from IBI Group Architects is another such project that blows it away in terms of height and scale.

As Urban Toronto recently discovered, a rezoning application filed with the City of Toronto reveals that Northam Realty wants to build a 72 storey twin tower condo complex at Yonge and College in place of the 18 storey Carlton Tower, which was built in 1959. It's a monster development, even for the area, which is rapidly becoming one of the most dense stretches in the country.

Given the existing building's lack of heritage status, it's unlikely to be protected on that account. That said, there will be major concerns related to the loss of commercial space and density proposed here. With so many projects underway in the vicinity, it's reasonable to ask what the breaking point for the neighbourhood is.

Over 1,100 units are proposed as part of the project, along with 256 parking spaces. It will be intriguing to see how this proceeds through the planning process. This development is about as brash as they come scale-wise, but given the precedence set nearby, it has a good chance to be built.

Honest Eds sign saleIf you've been kicking yourself for not saying goodbye to your favourite insanely lit Toronto landmark, now's your chance. This Saturday, October 22 starting at 8a.m. Honest Ed's will be hosting its final sign sale, where you can snag a piece of hand-painted history.

Don't be surprised if this final sale is even crazier than the last sign bonanza in 2015..

It was announced last year that the landmark retailer at Bloor and Bathurst would close at the end of 2016 before the property is converted to a rental housing development. Since then, the store has offered customers and heritage enthusiasts a chance to own snippets of it's much-loved signage and detailing.

Seems like Honest Ed's just can't quit Toronto yet, and we're happy about it.

Famous film director tweets his love for Hamilton

Guillermo del Toro HamiltonWhen did Hamilton get so cool? For years we've been watching as the city transformed, but it recently got the stamp of approval from a film director famous for his fantasy and horror movies.

That's right, Guillermo del Toro, who's currently filming in Hamilton, tweeted out his admiration for the city yesterday. "Hamilton is full of promise and surprises: great bookstores, Antique shops, coffee shops, restaurants and art stores. Crimson Peak land," he wrote.

He also revealed some of the places he visited, including Cannon Coffee Co. for fluffy pancakes and Rapscallion Rogue Eatery for a meaty meal.

Three years ago, del Toro said he was a fan of the Sunset Grill (and its fried egg sandwiches) in the Beaches.

In about a year, you'll be able to share the love because the Guillermo del Toro: At Home With Monsters exhibition opens at the AGO. You can start looking forward to September 2017 now.

Toronto announces plans for super park in Don Valley

don valley torontoToronto's Don Valley is undeniably beautiful, even when you're stuck in traffic on the DVP. But, some think the ravine is rather underused, especially since it runs right through the heart of the city.

That's why the city, along with Evergreen Canada, are working to create a massive "super park" stretching from the Evergreen Brick Works in the north all the way to Lake Ontario.

Earlier today, John Tory announced a group of private donors who are helping the Don River Valley Park project to fruition.

don valley toronto"Toronto was built around its ravines. They give the city a unique identity that has defined how our city has grown. This project allows us to celebrate our ravines, talk about the important role they play for our residents, our resilience and our quality of life," said Mayor Tory in a news release.

"With the help of private donors, we will continue to make improvements to the Lower Don Valley, like new way-finding signage and entry points that will help residents access and navigate this park."

The Lower Don Trail will re-open in the spring with new features, including better wayfinding signage as well as a new Pottery Road Bridge and Belleville Underpass.

As CBC reports, the city has already spent $18 million on this parkland since 2012. Once it gets its official park designation, it'll be the second biggest park in the city.

Industrial lot in Toronto will be home to huge art party

giant shippingToronto is getting better at throwing giant parties in abandoned spaces these days, but this great big art party is even more special than many we've seen for a few reasons. One Giant Night is a fundraiser party for people affected by Hurricane Matthew in a sprawling industrial lot in the Port Lands.

All the money raised will be going to the Red Cross, and it's being thrown by Giant Container and Toronto party people Undisposable, the former of which are experts at transforming shipping containers into unique, living venues.

Join the party Saturday, October 22 from 8p.m.-2a.m. inside their new massive lot space at 55 Unwin Avenue, which is now Giant Container's headquarters and walk/dance/run through four shipping containers designed by Toronto artists Fucci, Jayscale Kid Studio and Nicole Charles.

DJs Teddy Fantum, Jenno and Sophie Jones are spinning, and there'll be drinks from the likes of Ace Hill and Tito's Vodka. You'll need to RSVP to get on the guest list, which you can do at rsvp@giantcs.com.

A two bedroom apartment in Toronto averages $1760

toronto apartmentThe Toronto rental market was recently named the second most expensive in Canada, which is why few will be surprised to hear that our average rental rates are bonkers compared to a city like Montreal.

According to a just released rent report by Padmapper, rental costs are up across the country, but it's the stats on the most common Toronto rentals that'll make you drop your bags and run for the hills.

One bedroom units are up 4.6 per cent to a median cost of $1,370, but two bedroom units are up 4.8 per cent to $1,760. Take a look at what kind of apartment $1750 gets you in the city for an idea of what to expect.

We're not the only ones emptying our bank accounts on rent alone. Montreal recently became the fourth most expensive city for Canadian renters. A one bedroom there will cost you $1,070 and a two bedroom clocks in at $1,380.

Rentals in Hamilton, Oshawa and Kitchener are also all the rise. The good news? At least we're still not as expensive at Vancouver where a two bedroom will put you back $1,800.

Are you willing to dish out $1760 for a one bedroom apartment? Let us know in the comments.

Now open Bayview bike lane is a game changer

bayview bike lane pathLost in all the attention devoted to Toronto's latest mega park announcement is the news that the Bayview bike lane is already open. This is a big deal for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that it's expected the bike corridor will help people to access the future park.

There are a number of finishing touches still required before construction will officially wrap on the project, but cyclists have already started using the guardrail-separated path that runs along the east side of the street between Rosedale Valley and Pottery roads.

It's unlike any other bike infrastructure in the city in that the path is completely protected from traffic. It is officially referred to as the Bayview multi-use trail for this reason, but it functions more as a bike lane than an off-street path.

bayview bike laneIt's also worth noting that it's installation didn't result in a reduction of lanes for vehicular traffic. Because there were shoulders on the side of this fast-moving road before, the lane was able to be built using the ample extra space that was available.

In conjunction with the bike infrastructure, the street has been completely repaved, which makes an enormous difference to both cyclists and motorists. The street conditions here had deteriorated to such a degree that it was no longer deemed a safe way to access the Brick Works.

Now, it will be one of the best options to get to this cultural hub, but also to the new super park that'll take shape over the coming years. It's an everybody-wins infrastructure project that Toronto should look to as an example for future projects.

Blue Jays win big to stay alive in the ALCS

toronto blue jaysThe Toronto Blue Jays aren't dead yet. The team dug its heels in during game 4 of the Championship Series against Cleveland and won 5-1.

Despite reports that support for our home team was waning, fans banded together - both at the Rogers Centre and at the Bird's Nest - with rally towels in hand to cheer on the Jays to game 5.

Could this be the start of a four game winning streak? If Josh Donaldson continues to be such a hero, it certainly could be. Fingers crossed and rally cap still on. Game 5 goes down at 4:08 p.m. tomorrow at the Rogers Centre.

toronto donut subway mapToronto loves donuts. From donut cones to crazy creations topped with candied bacon, toasted marshmallow fluff or peanut butter-flavoured glaze, our city is teeming with donut shops that go far beyond your run-of-the-mill Tims. And one individual has made it easier for you to seek out these specialty bakeries.

donut map torontoAqil Raharjo, a design student at OCAD, created a map and pamphlet for a school project illustrating the city's best donut shops around the Yonge subway line.

While some of the donut destinations - like Glory Hole, for instance - are quite far away from the Yonge line, they're still easily accessible by TTC. So get out there and stuff your face with donuts. Just don't get any oil on this lovely map.
