Thousands packed a Toronto park to sing tribute to Leonard Cohen

leonard cohen christie pits torontoWhat better way to pay tribute to the legendary Canadian singer, song-writer and poet Leonard Cohen than to gather around and belt out some of his most well-known songs? That's exactly what thousands of Torontonians did last night at Christie Pits park.

Choir! Choir! Choir! organized the event, which filled the park with fans of all ages. They held candles and sang songs like "So Long Marianne" and of course, "Hallelujah." Lemon Bucket Orchestra even made a surprise appearance.

Earlier this year at the annual Luminato Festival, Choir! Choir! Choir! and Rufus Wainwright packed the Hearn with singers to record an epic and moving version of Cohen's "Hallelujah."

Last night's tribute, seemed much more low-key.

drake nightLast night marked the third annual Drake Night in Toronto. For the special evening the Raptors took on the Warriors at the ACC in front of a sold out crowd. While they may have lost the game, it was still one heck of night.

Fans got to take home sweet gear, Drake professed his love for ESPN reporter Doris Burke on his shirt, and NBA star Kevin Durant poked fun at the Toronto rapper saying he "doesn't give a damn about no damn Drake Night."

If you missed out on the game, here's what went down last night.

Toronto will get another beautiful day before winter weather arrives

$

nice weather torontoToronto's going to be a study in contrasts over the next few days. While we're already used to crazy, fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions, this November's been all over the place. And this weekend is no exception.

According to Environment Canada, it's supposed to be 18 C and sunny tomorrow - yes, it'll genuinely feel like spring or early fall. It won't even be that cold on Friday night - the forecasted low is 10 C.

By Sunday, however, it'll probably be miserable with grey, rainy skies and a high of just 4 C. By nighttime, it'll drop to -2 C with a chance of snow flurries. If you haven't noticed, winter is coming.

But as the cold creeps in, you might finally start to get into the holiday spirit. And you're in luck because there are lots of festive events happening across the city over the next little while.

The TTC wants to increase fares next year

ttc fare hikeBrace yourselves because in the new year, TTC fares might be a bit more expensive. According to a report that's heading in front of the TTC board on Monday, the TTC is proposing a 10-cent fare increase to help reduce its budget shortfalls.

So just how would fares go up on January 1? While adult cash fares would stay the same at $3.25, some of the proposed changes include making tokens $3 each (instead of $2.90) and pricing adult Metropasses at $146.25 (up from $141.50).

The report notes that these fare increases would generate $27 million in revenue for the TTC. And as the Toronto Star notes, if the TTC board approves this report, it would be the sixth consecutive year in which the TTC raised its prices.

The 5 most romantic getaways near Toronto

romantic getaways from TorontoRomantic getaways near Toronto are the perfect way to ditch the city for some much needed r&r with your significant other. Fortunately, there are a host of gorgeous inns and secluded spots within a two hour drive of the city where you can dial the romance up while getting cozy by a fire, luxuriating in spa services, or just soaking up the atmosphere of small town Ontario.

Here are my picks for the most romantic getaways near Toronto.

Soak up Prince Edward County in style
This Drake Devonshire in Prince Edward County brings the vibe of the Drake Hotel to the country with dramatic results. You can do wine tastings and vineyard tours by day before settling in for dinner in the stunning lakeside restaurant. Splurge on a room with a fireplace for the ultimate romantic experience. Looking for more privacy? An old carriage house or heritage home could be the ticket.

millcroft innPamper yourself in Caledon
Located just a short drive from Toronto, Caledon's stunning Millcroft Inn is nestled right beside Shaw's Creek in a former textile mill. The town is artsy and quaint, while the inn itself is memorable for its unique setting within the creek, its cozy rooms (some with fireplaces), and spa services. It'd be difficult to find a setting more romantic this close to the city.

Pillar and PostLuxuriate in the quaintness of Niagara-on-the-Lake
There are a number of old hotels in Niagara-on-the-Lake, all of which offer romance-ripe rooms in a small town setting that's surrounded by wineries. Harbour House and the Prince of Wales are excellent, but I'm partial to the Pillar and Post for the rustic charm of its lobby, its restaurant and bar, and the indoor pool. The town is fun to explore, but you hardly really need to leave the hotel.

treehouse cabin near torontoRent a secluded treehouse
Inns and resorts are great romantic getaway spots because they're designed to pamper you, but if it's seclusion that you're after, there's nothing better than an isolated tree-house style cabin. This cabin-loft near Port Perry looks out on 300 acres of land, while this nearby treehouse really is nestled in the forest. I'd also be remiss not to mention this romantic cabin in New Tecumseth.

woodlawn innEnjoy the charms of Cobourg in a historic inn
Located in the heart of Cobourg, the Woodlawn Inn is a stately old hotel dating back to the 19th century. It's a bit more reasonable price-wise than inns to the west of Toronto (rooms start at $99), but it's still outfitted with charming decor and boasts the best dining experience in the town. Another alternative is The Breakers, a lakeside resort that's as lovely in winter as it is in summer.

weekend events torontoWeekend events in Toronto show that the holidays are quickly approaching. The Toronto Christmas Market opens on Friday, there are massive lighting ceremonies across the GTA and to top it all off, the Santa Claus Parade is on Sunday. But it's easy to avoid the festive wave thanks to a solid collection of dance parties and concerts just in case you're not ready to start celebrating yet.

Here are my picks for the top events in Toronto this weekend.

BIG EVENTS

Santa Claus Parade (Nov. 20, Downtown Toronto)
Bundle up because the 112th Santa Claus Parade starts at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. No one is expecting you to follow the hundreds of clowns, floats and cheerleaders all day, but it's an easy event to stop by at for a little while and get into the festive spirit.

Podcast Festival (Nov. 18-20, Hot Docs Cinema)
See your favourite podcasts live on stage all weekend! Check out the lineup on the official website to see if your fave podcast is coming to town. Many of the big events are sold out of advance tickets, so get planning and listening as soon as you can.

Rally Against Trump (Nov. 19, City Hall)
It's already been a week since the US election and this is the second such rally planned in Toronto. This one's a peaceful protest that starts at City Hall at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Afterwards, the group will march down to the Trump Tower at 2 p.m., giving you the chance to let out all your frustrations with a crowd of likeminded Torontonians.

The World of RBC Rewards Plus (Until Nov. 20, Liberty Village)
Do you like free things? Then you might want to head to this RBC sponsored fun, games and giveaways event at 80 Lynn Williams Street. There'll be larger than life versions of your favourite childhood games, hot chocolate, a candy bar and a chance to win big prizes from RBC Rewards+

DANCING

Tush - Live disco with Mamalia (Junction City Music Hall)
Disco party collective Tush returns and they're bringing the funk to the Junction City Music Hall. With DJ sets from Cyclist, Hemingway and Jamie Kidd, this is a sweaty disco party unlike any other with a live disco band in between sets. It'll cost you $10 to get in, but your booty will thank you.

The LCBO is opening a bar in Toronto

lcbo barWhat happens when the province's big boss of booze opens their very own bar in Toronto? Something very unexpected.

On Thursday November 24 from 8 p.m. - Midnight the LCBO will launch Bar Zero, a drinking spot inside Church Aperitivo Bar at 1090 Queen Street West serving 0% cocktails. That's right, there's no booze involved in this bar, only creative cocktail ideas shaken and stirred by BarChef's Frankie Solarik.

There will also be snacks from Buca's Rob Gentile, and DJ feelgoodsmalls will provide the soundtrack. It's a pop up that promotes having a good time "responsibly" and showing people that you non-alcoholic drinks can be just as delicious and satisfying.

Be sure to bring your note pad to the drink recipe ideas home and make them yourself, adding whatever extra ingredients you feel are necessary.

U of T seeing big boost in interest after Trump victory

university of toronto trumpWe all know Canada's Citizenship and Immigration website crashed as the results from the American election rolled in last week. However, one local university also got more web traffic after Trump became the president-elect.

According to the University of Toronto, nearly 10,000 Americans visited future.utoronto.ca on November 9. The site, unsurprisingly, features instructions on how to apply to the school.

Apparently, that number represents 12 times the traffic from U.S. visitors in comparison to November 2015.

"Canada is a model for tolerance and inclusivity and many students are looking for an opportunity to study in that environment," said executive director, enrolment services and University registrar Richard Levin in a news release.

Along with increased interest in U of T, celebrities also said they wanted to move to Toronto, including Snoop Dogg.

sushi coneSushi burritos and poke have been all the rage this year. But one local shop might have discovered the next big thing: the sushi cone. Rolltation, on the stretch of Dundas described as Little Tokyo, will be introducing the sushi cone for a limited time starting this weekend.

This new menu item features raw salmon loaded into a traditional ice cream cone. This easy-to-hold snack is not only portable, but it will also make for one sweet Instagram shot. And if pizza cones taught us anything, it's that everything tastes better in a cone.

The TTC admits it's too crowded

$

ttcIf you regularly take the bus or streetcar to get around the city, you probably know that it's super crowded on certain routes; good luck getting a seat - or even a comfortable place to stand - on the 504, for instance, if you need to jet across King Street during rush hour.

As the Toronto Star reports today, 43 of about the TTC's 155 bus and streetcar routes are overcrowded at one point during each day.

Unsurprisingly, the 504 is the most overcrowded line - on average, it reaches 126 per cent capacity during the peak morning rush. Other packed routes include 505 Dundas, 95 York Mills, 510 Spadina and 511 Bathurst.

The TTC was going to spend $1.5 million to increase service, but the transit agency scrapped this plan thanks to lower than expected ridership this year.

What kind of house does $3.5 million get you in Toronto?

$

three million dollar house torontoThe $3.5 million house in Toronto is a reminder that this city ain't New York or London. If you have this much to spend on a home here, you're going to be able to snag a property that's both spacious and legitimately luxurious. While the Bridle Path is still far out of reach, Toronto homes in this price range leave little to be desired.

Here's what a $3.5 million house looks like in Toronto.

A modern brick house in North York for $3,279,000
Coming in at just under the $3.5 million mark, this Banbury house is the contemporary version of a solid brick home. There are five bedrooms and five bathrooms, but the big story is the design, which is modern without feeling ultra minimal or cold. It also features a huge backyard and a lovely deck to hang out on after a long workday. The only drawback is the modest Walk Score of 65.

three million dollar house torontoA corner lot in Don Mills for $3,488,000
Here's a mini-palace on a quiet crescent in Don Mills that will appeal to those who've always dreamed of a dramatically styled home. In addition to the neoclassical exterior columns, the sprawling entrance features tons of marble and a curved staircase. With seven washrooms, no one will ever have to hold it again.

three million dollar house torontoAn old mansion in Parkdale for $3,495,000
This house is a throwback to the early days of Parkdale when it was home to wealthy folks who wanted to live close to the lake. As parts of the neighbourhood return to these roots, old mansions like this one have become highly desirable, even if they require interior renovations. Green thumbs will love the backyard greenhouse.

three million dollar house torontoA row of houses on Dundas West for $3,599,999
How far does $3.5 million go in the city? Well, you can buy a row of homes on Dundas near Parliament. This investment opportunity comes with 14 parking spaces to go with the three homes that have been broken up into apartments. A savvy investor might renovate one of them as a pimp pad on the east side while making cash off of the other two.

three million dollar house torontoA modern build in Ledbury Park for $3,595,000
Some might characterize this as having it all in Toronto. This gorgeous contemporary home is located close to transit and shopping in Ledbury Park, features a stunning kitchen and en suite bathroom, and a surprisingly big backyard. The realtors are determined to sell it as located in Lawrence Park, but being on the west side of Avenue Rd. isn't really a drawback considering the property.

Would you buy any of these homes if you had the dough? Let us know in the comments.

The top 17 new event venues in Toronto for 2016

$
0
0

event venues torontoNew event venues in Toronto might seem like a rare breed thanks to the non-stop avalanche of condos, but we're here to tell you it's not true! In fact, the condo flux is only forcing people to get more creative and open even cooler spaces for art shows, parties, corporate events.

Here are my picks for the top new event venues in Toronto.

AC Repair Co
AC Repair Company is basically what would happen if someone turned their garage into an art gallery. It's located in the very hot Dupont and Franklin area, and the space regularly has art shows so book your event stat.

Blank Canvas
This is a 600-square-foot art house and open space in the Junction Triangle powered by Toronto art collective Omit Limitation. It's a 75 person capacity space with a big front room, exposed brick walls, Victorian tin ceiling, one-of-a-kind furniture and a backyard!

Brandscape
Brandscape is a brand new concept space by Toronto collective Tough Guy Mountain. This rentable VR studio, event and shooting space at 1136 Dupont St., features high ceilings and a 200-person-ish capacity.

Berkeley Bicycle Club
What's swankier than hosting an event at a historic Toronto mansion? The Gooderham House at 504 Jarvis St. is now the Berkeley Bicycle Club, a smallish venue meant for intimate parties and gatherings of 100 people inside and nearly 200 when you include the massive patio.

The Commons
Thanks to the Toronto Brick and Mortar group, this beautiful event space on Richmond East exists. It's a 5,300-square-foot facility drenched in light that can be divided into two studios. The space also includes a sound system, tables, chairs and a dressing room.

Electric Perfume
This Danforth venue is a "fun and learning oriented studio-gallery-lounge space for the development and exhibition of live gaming environments and immersive experiences." The main floor is for events, workshops, exhibitions, and the cozier basement is more for chilling out and lounging.

free space torontoFree
Free is a concept space for those who love photography, videography, directing and production - among many other arts-inspired things. It recently hosted a huge skateboard art show in the space on Claremont Street.

The Full Bawdy Loft
Located at 290 Carlaw, this theatre and events space is 2,000 square feet and will make your jaw drop when you walk in. It's perfect for fundraising events, weddings, photoshoots, standup nights. Think of it as a good old vaudeville soapbox spot.

The (new) Great Hall
We already told you that the ground level space inside The Great Hall will soon be transformed into a German-style beer hall, but they also recently renovated the entire building. The capacity of the whole place is 1,243, but each individual space is charming if you need something smaller.

Henderson Brewing
This craft brewery on Sterling Road is a 9,000-square-foot microbrewery with a constant stream of hoppy visitors and is a perfect spot to enjoy a beer inside an old an gymnastics studio. It not only holds beer events, but the massive industrial space is also available for parties, weddings and concerts.

Lululemon Queen Street
Lululemon's huge new concept store is both a retail and event space; it's the first of its kind in Canada. It features three zones: the Residency (retail area), the Hustle - the communal lounge area in the back where you can read and work - and The Attic, a space to sweat it all out.

event venue torontoThe Den
This nightlife hotspot at 423 College St., has quickly become a club-goer's fave thanks to its amazing sound system. The Den is on the lower level and is a spacious restaurant, lounge and event space. It has a rustic, cozy vibe and it;s open to both small private parties and larger public events.

Offsite
The cutest thing to open on Dundas West in some time is this cafe, retail shop and event space ready for all your occasions. It merges Canadian fashion with coffee culture and art everything can easily be moved aside for your new launch party, dance event or art show. The space is bright, clean and versatile.

One Loft
If you want to host an intimate loft party but don't own a loft, you're in luck. Rent out the One Loft at College and Spadina, which has multiple rooms available and 4,250 square feet of space.

Smash Ping Pong Lounge
Everyone's favourite rec room pastime that blew up on King West now exists in Riverside with 12 ping pong tables set up over two floors. Lucky for you, the second floor is a private event space, perfect for large private or corporate parties. The venue rental includes access to food and drinks, projector screens and table tennis, of course!

Tract 9
Dubbed Toronto's creative factory, this space at 358 Dufferin does everything from video production, web design, event planning and hosting. The team does it all and believes in the people they work with.

event venues torontoThe Wine Academy
The Wine Academy is a difficult place to find, but it's worth it once inside. Part member's club, part storage locker, and part tasting room, this is a shockingly large space for wine lovers. The impressive 6,000-square-foot underground facility is perfect for exclusive events or smaller parties, includes a board room and has a very Bruce Wayne vibe.

Did I miss a cool new event space you're excited about? Let us know in the comments.

Toronto gets way more parking tickets than other cities

$
0

parking torontoHave you gotten a parking ticket in Toronto? If you've ever left your car somewhere in the city, you've likely returned to find a bright yellow piece of paper on your windshield. And as your stomach dropped, you prayed for a reasonable fine.

But don't worry, you're not alone. According to a comprehensive, cross-Canada investigation by CBC Marketplace, parking officers in Toronto handed out an average of 6,000 tickets per day in 2015 and charged more than $100 million in fines. This is at least six times more than the daily average in other Canadian cities.

parking torontoApparently, Sunnybrook Hospital earned the title the worst place to park in Toronto as officers handed out about 9,000 tickets there. The Shops of Don Mills also got a poor rating; drivers racked up 2,800 tickets at this outdoor mall.

In total, officers gave out a total of 2,168,493 tickets in Toronto, way more than in any other Canadian city, which kind of makes sense because we're also way bigger.
