Significant snowfall expected in Toronto this weekend

0
0

Winter weather has greeted Toronto with a proverbial slap in the face as temperatures have plummeted in the city and are predicted to drop even more in the coming days. And right when it starts to warm up just a bit, Toronto is expected to be hit with a significant dumping of snow on the weekend.

According to a special weather statement from Environment Canada, a large system is expected to bring heavy snowfall to Southern Ontario starting on Friday evening and into Saturday. The Weather Network estimates that we could get as much as 25 centimetres by Sunday, though that includes a smaller system on Thursday.

It's possible that the snow turns to rain in some parts on Saturday, but forecasters aren't sure yet how it will play out. In any case, it's shaping up to be a mess, whether it be snow or slush.

As far as silver linings go, it's beginning to look like a white Christmas could be in the cards, and at least the storm is supposed to hit after the Friday commute, potentially averting another nightmare on the TTC

5 entertainment ideas for your Toronto holiday party

0
0

Throwing a holiday party doesn't have to be a lot of work. The main task is creating your guestlist, after that it's just food, booze and something unique to make it a night to remember.

Here are some ideas to bring your holiday party to the next level.

Create an indoor skating rink

Glisse On Ice takes away the stress and shivers of moving your holiday party to a public skating rink and brings the ice indoors. The synthetic indoor skating stage can be installed in all types of indoor venues and creator Chantal Fry and her team will perform specifically themed numbers for your event.

Invite carolers into your home

Stop hoping that a joyous group of carolers will stop by your place to sing some festive hits and just hire them to show up right on time! You can listen to what Toronto Carolers sound like before you hire them, and they come dressed in full Victoria regalia.

Get a GIF station

SweetGIF is a roming GIF station you can install at your holiday party for some very internet shareable moments. It's a digital photobooth that creates instant GIFs which are then uploaded to the internet where your party people can view, comment and share them on any social media. They have costume options as well.

Bring in the clowns

OK, maybe not exclusively clowns, but you can hire acrobats and circus performers through the Toronto School of Cirus Arts. From Aerial to acrobatics, their bending bodies will be a jaw dropping addition to your holiday party. If you ask nicely, maybe they'll even show up dressed as reindeers.

Trade your Spotify for a local harpist

The soundtrack to any holiday party is essential and set the tone for your night. To truly bring that warm, festive vibe to you party, hire a local harpist. Musicians like Joanna Jordan are happy to discuss song selections and can show up with full show harps, or smaller versions to fit into any size of space.

Stella Artois

Brought to you by Stella Artois, the perfect beer to serve your guests this holiday season.

TTC expects new streetcars to be delayed yet again

0
0

When will Toronto's streetcar-related woes come to an end? After numerous delays, the TTC warns that Bombardier still might not be able to meet its delivery deadline for Toronto's fleet of new streetcars.

According to CBC News, a new TTC reports indicates that Bombardier's ability to deliver Toronto 204 new streetcars before 2019 is questionable.

The TTC currently has 27 new streetcars, and it was supposed to have 30 by the end of this year.

Back in May, Bombardier made moves to speed up delivery, however, TTC staff think the targets might not be realistic. That's because as part of Bombardier's new delivery plan, the transit commission is expecting 76 streetcars in 2018 and 58 in 2019, which works out to one car every 3.3 days in 2018 and every 4.4 days the following year.

Along with this not seeming realistic, TTC staff based their report on the production readiness at Bombardier's plants across North America, in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The top new pubs in Toronto

0
0

Toronto loves its pubs so it's fitting there are plenty of places that opened this year where we can dig into a big plate of nachos and a frosty glass of beer. The new pubs that opened in the city this year have the craftiest brews, cheesiest snacks and most comfy atmosphere.

Here are my picks for the top new pubs in Toronto.

Bandit Brewery

At Dundas and Roncesvalles, this popular brewpub serves up their own beer along with a sophisticated little menu of charcuterie boards, stews, and other snacks. They also host a bevy of events like art shows and oysters n’ beer.

Crafty Coyote

With a crazy chalkboard menu of dozens upon dozens of Ontario craft beers, this new spot in the Annex thankfully replaced the generic yogurt shop and other businesses previously populating the prime corner. Froyo is great, but the Annex has a greater demand for fine ales.

Radical Road

This brewpub in Leslieville is pumping out big beers in their tiny little space, as well as a comforting but delightful pub menu of items like octopus salad and braised beef with mac n’ cheese and cornbread. They serve their own thoughtful, drinkable beers, though in a limited variety.

The Belsize

This pub up on Mount Pleasant has great food and possibly even better beer, often with exclusive sneak peek picks from brands like Muskoka and always with a cask ale on tap. For the hungries, they’ve got terrine, salade nicoise, fried pickles, burgers, and specials like shepherd’s pie.

The Dylan

This Danforth East pub is meant to pay homage to Dylans both Bob and Thomas, and has a ton of rustic booze options from tall boys of craft beer to whiskey-forward cocktails.

Round the Horn

This Roncesvalles pub with a neighbourhood feel stocks local cans and bottles from producers like Pommies and Kensington Brewing Company, and draft from Flying Monkeys, Nickel Brook, Beau’s, and the like, as well as a menu of hot dogs.

Her Father’s Cider

This artsy and colourful newcomer to Harbord Village earns its status with a cider menu of over 75 apple-based beverages from Ontario and around the world. Their menu includes elevated comfort food in the form of raclette, duck rillette, and cod prepared in cider.

Condo of the week: 180 University Avenue

If you've ever wondered what it's like to live at the Shangri-La (the hotel-condo, rather than James Hilton's mythical paradise), a glimpse at this 57th floor suite confirms that it's pretty swank up there. This two bedroom plus den condo goes for $2,780,000 and is decked out with plenty of luxury features in keeping with its price tag.

180 university toronto condoThe design here is contemporary without the minimalist trappings that you often see in Toronto condos that adopt the soft-loft style. Located in one of the city's finest hotels, there's no desire for an industrial vibe here. This unit is bright as can be with white walls and wood floors throughout the main living areas.

180 university toronto condoThe space isn't huge for the money someone will be putting down, but living in a downtown hotel has its perks, including a perfect 100 WalkScore and the various amenities offered on site like a full service gym, pool, and spa.

GOOD FOR

Someone who can afford to have expensive tastes. The prospective buyer will probably be working a lot to make all that money, so having everything that you need on-site could be a major selling feature for an executive who's tight on time.

MOVE ON IF

This is not a condo meant for a sizable downtown familiy. You can get three bedrooms out of it if you try, but at the expense of some of the luxury in having the den as an entertainment room. If it's lots of space you're after, this one isn't for you.

Average price of one bedroom apartment in Toronto reaches $1500

The price of a Toronto apartment has reached a depressing new landmark for would-be renters out there. According to PadMapper's most recent rent report, the average cost of a one bedroom rental has hit the $1,500 mark.

That's up 4.9 per cent from $1,430 last month. Two bedrooms aren't any more palatable, coming in at an average of $1,900 for December. These numbers keep Toronto just behind Vancouver's rental market, which remains the most expensive in the country.

With the Toronto real estate market surpassing Vancouver's as the hottest in the country, we could, however, see rental rates in both cities get closer and closer. Month over month, Vancouver's one bedroom units only increased 1.1 per cent to $1,800.

Now, more than ever, is a good time to know what neighbourhoods offer the best bang for your buck for rentals. Good luck apartment hunting out there — it's a scary market.

Toronto getting battered by whiteout snow squalls

It's like a tale of two cities in Toronto today. There was heavy snow fall in the city's east and west ends, while the downtown core remained relatively clear for much of the afternoon, though that all changed quickly as snow swept across the city.

Earlier today, Environment Canada issued a weather advisory for Toronto, warning of a messy commute with possible whiteout conditions at times. It even said to consider postponing all non-essential travel.

"Snow may quickly accumulate on roads with a quick 5 to 10 cm likely. Local snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm are possible in some areas," read the advisory.

"Near zero visibility in snow and blowing snow has already been reported in quite a few localities just north of Toronto and in the north end of Toronto this afternoon," it continued.

This snow band is supposed to move out of the Golden Horseshoe area this evening, but there's lots more precipitation (likely snow that'll turn to rain) in the forecast this weekend.

The city of Toronto also issued an Extreme Cold Weather Alert today and already, a number of events have been cancelled, including the December 15 edition of the Holiday Fair in Nathan Phillips Square and the Celebratory Procession (parade) to honour Honest Ed's.

Here's how the city's responding to the latest nasty weather.

DineSafe-style grading system coming for Toronto apartments

Toronto has finally made major strides toward cracking down on bad landlords in the city. The first phase of a new plan to deal with property owners adopted at city council yesterday could be in place by next year. It will force landlords to register with the city, subject buildings to inspections, and mandate that the results are posted at their entrances.

Where it gets even more interesting, however, is that a DineSafe-style grading system is likely to be put in place for landlords as well. The idea has been around for some time, but when Municipal Licensing and Standards considered it as part of new rules for landlords a few weeks ago, it appeared that it was off the table.

It's now a central part of the mandate that city staff have been given to create a bylaw that would govern rental properties around Toronto thanks to an amendment by Councillor Josh Matlow. Affordable housing advocates are hailing the new rules as groundbreaking.

Part of the plan also involves an additional 12 building inspectors to ensure that buildings are being kept in a good state of repair or face the consequences of a lower rating. The initial word is that the grading will adopt a letter-system from A to F, differentiating it from DineSafe's colour-coded green, yellow, and red rankings.

City staff are expected to report on the new bylaw by October 2017.

18 photos of Toronto's first blizzard of the year

Yesterday Toronto found itself getting battered by whiteout snow squalls. Blizzard-like conditions quickly overtook the city making for one messy commute home with almost no visibility on some streets. While getting home might have been a diaster for some it sure made for some astonishing photos to look at.

If you didn't make it outside yesterday evening, here's what you missed.

The Best Thai Restaurants in Toronto

0
0

The best Thai restaurants in Toronto have come a long way over the past decade. This shift towards trusting that Torontonian palates can appreciate true Thai flavours means it’s no longer necessary to fly halfway around the world in order to experience the vivid, delightful combinations of sweet, sour, salty, bitter and spicy as they’re meant to be, with nothing held back or watered down.

Here are the best Thai restaurants in Toronto.

11 - Pattaya

This Beaches restaurant is aptly named after a resort city on the Gulf of Thailand. Serving up classic Thai fare from squash fritters to pad thai (choose from house-made tamarind sauce or curry sauce), there are also plenty of vegan and gluten-free options for those with dietary restrictions.
10 - Eat BKK

Devoted to Bangkok-style street food, this North York Thai joint offers some unconventional fusion dishes, like khao soi poutine and spaghetti curry. Sticklers for tradition will be happy to know that there are still staples like tom yum, chicken satay and pad thai to fall back on here as well.
9 - Nimman Thai Cuisine

This Mimico spot on Lakeshore Blvd. W. makes a tasty choo chee shrimp and three different kinds of pad thai that are beautifully presented. One of the chefs comes from the fourth generation of a family line that prepared food for the Thai royal family, so you know you're in good hands.
6 - Nana

From the same owner of the much-loved Khao San Road, this West Queen West joint has recreated the feeling of eating at Thai street food stalls (complete with uncomfortable red plastic stools to make it truly authentic). Southern fried chicken laab and boat noodle soup with beef blood are winners here, with spot-on flavours.
7 - Jatujak (Victoria Park)

With two locations in Scarborough, these Thai street food restaurants are named after the largest weekend market in Thailand. Faves like prad ga prow (holy basil with egg and minced meat) and a rainbow of curries are sure to hit all the right spots.
5 - Sabai Sabai

Originally located on Church, this bustling Bloor & Yonge restaurant specializes in Northern Thai and Laotian cuisine. The dinner menu offers small and large plates to encourage sharing and sampling amongst dining companions, along with ample options for vegans.
4 - Sukhothai (Dundas West)

What started as a hole in the wall in Regent Park has since expanded to a number of locations around the city including one on Dundas West. Comforting khao soi combines both noodles and curry while pla taud (a fried fish platter with a mango salad and rice) is another crowd-pleaser.
8 - Salad King

An old standby for broke students, this affordable favourite on Yonge near Ryerson continues to pack 'em in. Pick a dish and choose the level of spiciness you can endure; those in the know love to order the "secret" off-menu Thai Islamic noodles, which come covered in a creamy coconut Panang curry sauce.
3 - Pai

Named after the small town in Northern Thailand, this bustling Entertainment District eatery serves up dishes like laap (a ground pork salad) and gaeng hunglay (a Northern Thai curry). There's even a weekday quick-service lunch counter and Thai market tucked away in the back for those who can't stand to wait for their food.

The top 10 new cocktail bars in Toronto

0
0

The top new cocktail bars in Toronto offer an escape from the everyday, whether in the form of exotic concoctions with rare ingredients or eye-popping garnishes like flowers and dehydrated citrus fruit. Whether you prefer your drinks with a stiff layer of foam on top or piled high with ice, these bars are here to slake your thirst.

Here are my picks for the top new cocktail bars in Toronto.

Pretty Ugly

This mezcaleria shrouds its establishment in darkness and carpets that cover the windows and door, but it’s worth poking your nose in for the delightful little mezcaleria at the front and the bold cocktails at the back. The Crystal Lake is garnished with dried dame’s rocket and features foraged ingredients.

Famous Last Words

It’s revenge of the nerds at this book-themed bar where all the cocktails are named after literary titles and the menu has a table of contents. Snuggle up to the fireplace in a cozy chair and grab a book and sip on a Tourist Season or a Famous Last Words, a riff on The Last Word cocktail.

Pray Tell

Near College and Dovercourt, this friendly and hip snack bar with Asian influences is also serving up a menu of cocktails designed by the same bartender behind Track & Field. It’s a balanced list of drinks with names like Make Nice and B-Side Track.

Farside

This artsy bar is paying tribute to local Toronto creative legends with cocktails like the Chili Gonzalez, a delightfully spicy drink with a chili garnish. They’re also serving punches out of a giant pineapple behind the bar, and the Forever 41 is a play on a white wine spritzer garnished with a long leaf.

Shamone

Aside from their epic free snack nights which feature mini sandwiches and meat, cheese and fruit platters, this quirky Junction bar does fun boilermakers like a Stiegl Radler and El Jimador combo as well as refreshing Fruli mojitos.

Baro

This reinvention of Valdez on Baro has opened its whopping four-floor King West location with a bang and a wild cocktail list. The Iron Tyrant has an infused ice cube that ages the drink as it melts, and the Five Flower is topped with radiant edible flower petals.

Dolly’s

This new addition to Bloordale has a tasty menu of Filipino dishes like kare kare, lechon and house made noodles, but they also do epic mojito pitchers in four different styles. You can also order the typically rum-based drinks garnished with a beefy sugar cane stick.

Good Fortune

This bar below La Carnita and Sweet Jesus on Eglinton is loud, dark, and boozy. If you're looking for crazy spiked slushies, milkshakes, Jell-O, and punch bowls, this is the uptown watering hole for you.

Clocktower Bar

Clocktower Bar is the opposite of Good Fortune and many of the cocktail spots above, opting for a bright, light, minimal design over a cluttered, dim vibe. This sister space to Boxcar Social makes cocktails like a jalapeno mint margarita using house bitters and infusions.

Maple Leaf Tavern

If that jalapeno mint margarita piqued your interest, the "stealth" margarita at Maple Leaf Tavern should have you salivating, also incorporating jalapeno along with a fat slice of cucumber.

Another big dump of snow expected in Toronto tonight

Let in snow, let it snow, let it snow! That's what we're all singing in Toronto because there's lots more white stuff on the way.

After last night's messy commute home, filled with whiteouts and snow squalls, Environment Canada issued another special weather statement for Toronto this morning. There's another "significant" snowfall forecasted for tonight.

"A Colorado low is expected to trek towards Southern Ontario tonight, with snow spreading across much of the region this evening. Snow will continue overnight into Saturday morning," reads the statement.

"Snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 centimetres are likely with a few locales receiving in excess of 10 cm. The snow is forecast to change to rain on Saturday as mild air pays a brief visit. The rain will then change back to some snow Saturday night as colder air returns in the wake of the low, with perhaps a couple more centimetres of snow possible."

If you're behind on your Christmas shopping, this weekend's probably the time to hole up in a mall and get it all done. Or stay at home, snuggle up under a blanket, order in and hibernate until Monday morning.
