The Beaches is getting a food and beer festival

$

0

The Beaches' most anticipated festival of the year might always focus on jazz, but before this annual musical extravaganza kicks off, the lakeside neighbourhood will get another big event.

Spring to the Beach is a brand new food, beer and shopping festival organized by The Beach Village BIA. It's happening on May 5 and 6 on Queen Street East and in Kew Gardens.

On May 5, Spring to the Beach will launch with Moonlight Madness, a shopping event on Queen Street with buskers and live music that'll go until 9 p.m.

Mill St. will run a beer garden at Kew Gardens that'll feature $5 brews as well as $5 food items from local vendors, including Hogtown Smoke and Dufflet .

There will be a sidewalk sale and more beer garden action the next day, so this seems like a pretty good excuse to get outside on the first weekend of May.

3D printers and printing services in Toronto have grown over the years as much as the technology has. There was most definitely an explosive amount of interest a few years ago, and while the buzz has subsided a bit, the industry continues to evolve and become more accessible to everyone.

Here are my picks for the top 3D printing services in Toronto.

3DPhacktory

This full-service 3D printing and design studio on Dundas East in Leslieville is here to help you digitize any idea that exists in your mind. They have an army of in-house industrial designers that will help realize a personal, professional or even industrial project and can deliver a prototype as soon as 24 hours later.

Hot Pop Factory

Get a free quote from this Chinatown studio before your project even begins. They have a fast turnaround and specialize in scaled models, hardware enclosures, parts and components, art and sculpture, as well as fashion accessories.

MakeLab

Though their home base is on Stewart Avenue near King and Bathurst, this studio has been known to take their 3D printers to Toronto bars and teach design until last call. They offer 3D printing pop-up courses to let large groups dream up their own creations, as well as one-on-one training.

MakeWorks

Located westward on College Street, this co-working studio has an on-site prototyping lab and free coffee. It's a great spot if you need to create a prototype for a project as they have all the hardware and personalized product packaging. They'll totally help if it's also just a hobby project.

Protolab TO

From the novice DIY'er to pro makers, artists and designers, this maker studio welcomes everyone are their studio near Main subway station. They have multiple basic 3D printers as well as the Airwolf3D HD, which is like the Terminator or printers. It's massive, impressive and you can get help here or work on your own.

Selftraits

Redefining the selfie, this cool studio at Queen West and Augusta lets you create 3D mininature "scultraits" of whatever/whoever you have in mind. Kind of creepy, kind of mind blowing, all you need to do is visit the studio, get a scan, choose a pose and enjoy a figure of yourself forever. They can also create 3D busts if you need to get serious.

Steamlabs

Attention inventors young and old. This Spadina tech lab is a place for wannabe mad scientists who want to invent and create, but access to the laboratory to make that happen. If you're a skilled tech maker, you'll already be very comfortable here. They've got 3D printers, workshops and training and bootcamps if you need them.

Condo of the week: 637 Lake Shore Boulevard West

The Tip Top Lofts are one of those condo buildings in Toronto where turnover is infrequent. As one of the nicer residential adaptive re-use projects in the city, it would seem that buyers here tend to be happy with the mix of historical features and modern amenities.

I'm sure the lakeside location doesn't hurt, either.

tip top loftsI've always been a fan of this building, and this recently listed unit offers some insight into what works well here. In place of cookie cutter floor plans, the living spaces reference the building's past with warehouse-style windows and unique layouts.

tip top lofts torontoThis two bedroom unit is more of a soft than hard loft, but remains spacious and filled with light. It's set up as a one bedroom plus office, but you could put more people into the suite without it feeling cramped.

tip top lofts torontoAmenities-wise, there's a massive party room and social area, a decent-sized gym with a dedicated cardio area, and a spa for all your self-care needs. You'll pay a premium for all this in maintenance fees, but they're not completely outlandish.

This one will have broad appeal, but will really captivate potential buyers intrigued by the character of the building and its location right on the waterfront.

As indicated by the low-ish Walk Score, the drawback to being right on the lake is that there aren't exactly a ton of amenities nearby. Someone who wants to walk pretty much everywhere will do better in a more central location.

Toronto is getting a giant auto mall

Cars should be on your mind when you're driving down the Don Valley Parkway, but thanks to a new development under construction, they'll all you'll be able to think about when you pass by Queen Street East.

That's because the Downtown Automotive Group, along with Streetcar Developments, is working on Autoplex, a mixed-use project that'll see seven car dealerships - Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Infiniti, Lincoln, Nissan and Toyota - spring up by the DVP.

These will be connected to a Streetcar's Riverside Square condo, designed by RAW Architects, which should be ready for occupancy by 2018.

This project received pushback last year, but it looks like construction is underway.

Toronto's waterfront is going to get a lot more artsy next year thanks to a new project shaping up inside an incoming condo development.

Daniels Waterfront - City of the Arts will not only include two condo towers and so-called office condos, but also Artscape Launchpad, a 30,000 square foot incubator and co-working space for creative entrepreneurs.

According to Artscape, this facility will help art and design professionals build and grow sustainable businesses thanks to a suite of on-site resources, workshops and programs.

In its other locations, Artscape provide affordable live-work space for artists as well as venues and performance spaces. Launchpad is slated to take off and open in spring 2018.

Toronto poised to become most expensive rental market in Canada

$

0

A new report suggests that Toronto rental rates continue to increase as the Ontario government mulls over new rental control measures that could be tabled as early as the upcoming April 27 budget.

According to apartment listings website Padmapper, the median rent for a one bedroom in Toronto surpassed the $1,750 mark for the first time, on the heels of a 4.9 percent jump in the median price for such units this month.

Last month, the site also tracked a 4.9 percent increase. Since Padmapper began recording the median rental rates in Toronto for one and two bedroom apartments, they've risen from $1,320 and $1,650 (June 2016) to $1,760 and $2,270 in the span of 10 months.

If the trend continues, this puts Toronto on track to pass Vancouver as the most expensive rental market in the country by this summer. The median price for a one bedroom in Vancouver has hovered at $1,900 for the last three months, while Toronto's witnessed steady gains.

There may, however, be relief in sight. In addition to possible rent control measures, another recent report from Urbanation claims that rent for condo units in Toronto decreased in the first quarter of 2017.

Urbanation cites increased supply as the force behind stabilization in the market, though many would argue that the rates for condo rentals in Toronto became unaffordable long ago.

Vintage TTC streetcar will return to service this summer

The transit nerd within us all is about to get very happy. Although it hasn't been formally announced yet, the TTC will bring a vintage streetcar back into service along the 509 Harbourfront route this summer so we can all travel back to the 1950s for a few moments.

This has become a summer tradition for the TTC, which still maintains a few of its old PCC models, which were in regular service between 1938 and 1996. These, in case you were wondering, are the original red rockets.

Heritage service will take place on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. starting on Victoria Day weekend and running through to Labour Day, subject to driver availability. If last year was any indication, it should be out almost every weekend.

You'll only find this car on the 509 route, and it won't have a fixed schedule, so if you want to take a nostalgic ride, you'll have to watch for it down by the waterfront or wait at the Union Station streetcar loop for it to pull into the station.

While it's not considered part of regular service, the PCC car will still take you from A to B — with a trip down memory lane thrown in for good measure.

Meet the guy behind Toronto's screen printing empire

The story of how one of Toronto's most popular printing presses got started begins on a epic one.

Straight out of OCAD, print artist Jacob Horwood found his golden ticket and was accepted as a member at queer nightlife legend and artist Will Munro's Punch Clock Printing studio.

There he learned everything he needed to know under the watchful eyes of Munro and co-conspirator Michael Comeau - the two men responsible for the Vazaleen posters that once decorated the city in the early 2000s.

A poster inspired by the original Vazaleen party posters. JasonParis/Flickr

As the years moved on, Horwood grew his skills and took over the business after Munro passed away in 2010, and the studio, now called Private Press Printing, relocated to Sorauren Avenue.

"In the beginning, I was printing whatever I could get," says Horwood. "A handful of bands and film festivals that needed annual posters, but mostly referrals."

Horwood and his son in the shop on Sauroren Ave via Instagram.

But his business and process grew as he set out on his own. "Some people tell me, 'I couldn’t print for other people... graphic designers are crazy.' If you mess up you lose three days of work ...that’s a chance I take with every contract," he says.

A long-sleeve shirt created for Toronto artist Louise Reimer via Instagram.

Horwood often discovers music, parties and artists he likes through commissioned projects.

A tote Horwood recently created for Rotate This's anniversary weekend via Instagram.

He's done work for countless local businesses, events, renowned visual artists (including Luis Jacob, Oliver Husain and in/future festival participant Philippe Blanchard, to name a few) and bands.

Band t-shirt for Toronto's Dwayne Gretsky via Instagram.

"Sometimes bands come through and say, 'oh you’re in Canada and we need shirts tonight,'" Horwood says. Rush jobs like that, he explains, crop up occasionally when bands don't want to bring merch over the border.

"They’ll call and say, 'we’re in Buffalo, we have a show tomorrow.' Propagandi was one of them," Horwood continues.

A custom shirt created for Toronto's Maylee Todd. Instagram

Weaves, Dwayne Gretsky, Greys, Vag Halen and New Fries are some other bands he's worked with. While event posters are a thing of the past (he started doing two a week in the early 2000s, and now does two a year), the screen printing business is anything but dead.

A collection of tote bags made for local arts groups via Instagram.

"I would say it's not exactly thriving, it's not easy to get into it DIY," he says. "This scene leans towards commercial production, but I don’t get bored of this work, and it's all about community. The community is right here."

Queen's Quay Terminal is getting a major upgrade

Toronto's Queen Quay Terminal dates back to the mid-1920s and to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary, it's getting a series of upgrades.

In a project that came to fruition in 1983, architectural firm Zeidler Roberts Partnership transformed the decommissioned warehouse into a mixed-use building featuring retail, commercial and residential space.

The retail component, however, was looking pretty tired as of late, so it's getting a revamp for this summer.

Taylor Borg, a business development associate at Beauleigh - the retail consulting company working on this project - says over the past three to four years, Beauleigh has been "de-leasing" the centre and approximately 10 tenants moved out. So what'll take their place?

SWAT - Synergy Wellness Attitude Training.

Along with the 19,000 square foot Sobeys that's already open on site, the building's slated to get a SWAT Health fitness centre.

The Watermark Irish Pub will stick around, but it's getting a makeover and will reemerge as The Goodman Pub and Kitchen. That team will also debut a new pizzeria called Pie Bar in the Bar Milano space.

What the Joe Bird space will look like when it opens.

Borg's involved with this project on multiple levels because he and his father will open up Joe Bird, a new chicken restaurant.

Dim sum spot Pearl will remain in the building, but it's also going to get a facelift as part of this project.

Since, as landlord Brookfield Properties confirms, this whole upgrade's tied to Canada's sesquicentennial, everything should open around July 1.

Movies and TV shows being filmed in Toronto this spring and summer range from thrillers and big budget sci-fi series (hi, Star Trek!) to romance and real-life dramas. Keep your eyes peeled for stars as they roam the city when they've finished shooting for the day.

Condor Season 1

Max Irons, Mira Sorvino and Brendan Fraser star in this 10 episode drama remake of Sydney Pollack’s 1975 political thrillerThree Days of the Condor. Expect a lot of CIA conspiracies, twists and suspense. They're filming from April 23 to August 15.

Flint

There was a lot of hype about this Lifetime movie on the 2016 Flint, Michigan water crisis not only because of the topic, but because Cher was cast in the lead. She's since had to back out for personal reasons, but the TV movie is filming in Toronto until May 17.

The Girlfriend Experience Season 2

Steven Soderberg's hit show is returning for a second season, and it'll be filmed here until April 27. This season stars Anna Friel from Netflix's Marcella. It's full of suspense, drama and is set in Washington and New Mexico.

This romantic drama stars Jaden Smith and Cara Delevingne. It's about a 17-year-old boy who, after learning his girlfriend is dying, sets out to give her their entire life together, in the year she has left. It's filming here from April 10 to May 26.

Season 4 of the hit CBC series is filming in Toronto until July 28. Co-creators and father-son team Eugene and Daniel Levy will continue as executive producers and writers of the show, which has also been picked up by Pop in the US.

This comedy/drama film follows four people in New York City through the worst crises of their lives. They'll be filming Toronto, Copenhagen and New York City from May 15 to June 2. Danish director Lone Scherfig is at the helm.

Stockholm

There's a lot of buzz around this thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Sweden's Noomi Rapace that's filming here until May 25. Directed by Canada’s Robert Budreau, it's based on the true story of a 1973 bank heist where hostages bonded with the robbers and turned against police.

Toronto had an electric vibe yesterday that hasn't been felt since 2013. The Maple Leafs were finally back in the playoffs, and the city was primed to celebrate. Thousands turned up at Maple Leaf Square outside the ACC to mark the occasion and watch game 1 against Washington.

While we didn't get the result we wanted, the game wildly exciting as the Buds went up 2-0 in the first period only to see that lead slip away before heading to OT, where it all fell apart. Still, the game only bolstered fans hope that the Leafs can pull of an upset.

The average price for a detached house in Toronto is $1,561,780, at least according to the latest Toronto Real Estate Board's latest report. For that much money, you should be able to get a whole lot of house, right?

Not always. While you won't be able to buy a mansion for $1.5 million, you might be able to score a small home in a great neighbourhood, if you're lucky. Or you could move an hour north and get yourself 40 acres of land in Georgina for the same price.

Here's what an average price home looks like in Toronto.

$1,555,556 in Leslieville (top photo)

It's not hard to believe that this cozy-looking two bedroom house 31 Hastings Ave., in Leslieville sold for nearly $500,000 over asking.

This house at 484 Drewry Ave., actually sold for under asking. To match the other properties in this North York neighbourhood, it'll probably become a teardown.

Of course this home at 17 Lakeview Ave., in one of the most coveted parts of the city sold for more than $500,000 over asking. The is in need of a revamp, unless the owners seriously dig the 1960s-style patterned wall paper.

This stucco house at 839 Royal York Rd. looks straight out of the 1990s, but that didn't stop it from selling well above asking.
