$

Indulgent burgers in Toronto are next-level creations featuring premium toppings like truffles or foie gras, often stacked so high they barely fit into your mouth.

Here are my picks for the most indulgent burgers in Toronto.

Shamrock Burgers

At $11.50, The Canadiana won't break the bank, but by eating it you'll exceed your caloric intake for the day, and maybe even for the week. The 8-ounce patty comes on a bun with saucy pulled pork, peameal bacon, strip bacon, crispy fried onions and poutine.

Holy Chuck Burgers

The local burger chain is home to The Holy Duck, a decadent creation featuring a single beef patty topped with a slab of seared foie gras, double-smoked bacon, white truffle oil, maple syrup and freshly shaved white truffles for good measure.

Toma Burger Addiction

Ultra luxe toppings like foie gras, truffle mayo, cremini mushrooms, caramelized onions, double smoked bacon, swiss cheese, arugula, balsamic glaze and truffle oil all land on The Double Jackpot built on a soft, fluffy house-baked milk bun.

Burger's Priest

Instead of buns, two grilled cheese sandwich surround two patties and two panko-crusted cheese-stuffed mushrooms with all the fixins' on this secret-menu monstrosity, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Lisa Marie

Visit during brunch to experience their The Double Pancake Pork Burger. This massive morning feast features two 4-ounce pork burger patties stacked between pancake buns topped with lettuce, cheese and tomatoes and served with a side of maple syrup.

Momofuku Daisho

Make your way to the third floor of this Shangri La restaurant to sink your teeth into their Shrimp Stack Burger ($23). It features both a beef and shrimp patties along with hozon mayo and kohlrabi slaw.

Top Gun Steak

Order up the Destroyer at this Kensington Market joint and receive a burger complete with four beef patties, deep fried portobello mushrooms all sandwiched in between to grilled cheeses.

The Goodman Pub

The Surf N Turf Burger is a must try at this Harbourfront restaurant. It features brown butter lobster, creole remoulade, bacon, mornay sauce, baby arugula tomato and shoestring pickles.

Kookoo's Kitchen

Burgers don't get much more epic than the ones found at this Woodbridge spot. Hilariously dubbed the Nutjob ($21) features two twelve-ounce patties of AAA beef topped with triple cheese and four ounces of peppery Montreal smoked meat.

People are loving Toronto's new black ice cream

$

Toronto's first black ice cream shop opened today across from Trinity Bellwoods Park and people are going nuts. A steady stream of customers made their made to ihalo Krunch today to see what all the hype was about and so far our city's newest frozen treat doesn't disappoint.

The ice cream is truly a black, not a grey like the more common black sesame flavour. It's made with activated charcoal, something that some say has health benefits. This is also why it also goes by the name charcoal ice cream, or sometimes goth ice cream.

A post shared by tanvi swar (@tanviswar) on

It gained a bit of a cult following last summer south of the border, but despite the myriad ice cream fads prevalent in our city this is the first time it's made an appearance here.

A post shared by Charmaine (@yocharlemagne) on

ihalo Krunch also sells ice cream in other flavours like ube, matcha and vanilla bean. It all comes as soft serve in house-made charcoal waffle cones.

The top 5 parks with outdoor BBQ grills in Toronto

$

0

Parks with outdoor BBQ grills in Toronto are a rare commodity, so you'll want to arrive early when planning a cookout. While there are, indeed, charcoal BBQs for public use at several city parks, some are better than others.

Here are my picks for the top parks with outdoor BBQ grills in Toronto.

Sunnybrook Park

This park near Bayview and Leslie is arguably the best of all the BBQ-equipped parks, with plenty of grills available along the grounds.

Earl Bales Park

Your favourite place for novice skiing in the wintertime is also a great place to grill in the summer. Just off of Bathurst south of Sheppard, the park has lots of green space along with picnic tables, benches, and fixed charcoal grills throughout the grounds.

Cherry Beach

This Port Lands destination epitomizes the greatness that is the summer night with the sounds of faded music, the smell of charcoal barbeques and the sweet nostalgia of brooding teen angst.

Centennial Park

Some may argue that Etobicoke is already awash with plenty of open space and outdoor grills that any additional BBQ action is redundant. To that I say: there is always more room for grilling. You will find various spots for BBQ and seating throughout Centennial Park.

Morningside Park

This large Scarborough park has lots to offer all year round and in the summer it's a prime destination for hikes that will work up quite the hunger. Good thing then you have the option for a post-hike BBQ with one of their many outdoor grills.

10 hotels and inns to visit near Toronto

$

Few things are more relaxing than a quick getaway to a hotel or inn near Toronto for a weekend. Southern Ontario is brimming with small town inns that are as picturesque as they are steeped in history. Whether used as a home base during a weekend of theatre-going or as a self-pampering spa escape, these hotels promote relaxation in style.

Here are my picks for hotels and inns to visit near Toronto.

Millcroft Inn

This stunning Caledon inn is nestled right beside Shaw's Creek in a former textile mill. It's just a short drive from Toronto, but the town is artsy and quaint, while the inn itself is memorable for its unique setting within the creek.

Inn on the Twenty

For all the wineries to visit in and around the Beamsville Bench, there's a shortage of nice accommodations in the area. The Inn on the Twenty in Jordan Station is thus the go-to for those who want a refined hotel and dining experience in the heart of this wine region.

Pillar and Post

There are a number of old hotels in Niagara-on-the-Lake, but I've always loved the Pillar and Post for the rustic charm of its lobby. The restaurant here is good as well, and there's a real old school charm that defines the place.

Drake Devonshire

This hotel and restaurant in Prince Edward County brings the vibe of the Drake Hotel to the country with dramatic results. The design is both stunning and rustic, with a slick open dining room and a deck that looks out toward Lake Ontario. Where other inns on this list might be called historic, the Devonshire is going for vintage.

Langdon Hall

If you're looking for the ultimate in culinary pampering, Langdon Hall is the premier destination close to Toronto. The restaurant at this estate-like inn is consistently ranked one of the best in the country, while the rooms and amenities are also luxurious.

St. Anne's

This wellness retreat is built around an old stone inn that dates back to 1858. People come here for the outdoor yoga and spa services, but the grounds themselves are the most remarkable thing. Enjoy a drink by the pool overlooking the 150+ year old building.

The Parlour Inn

A town that hosts a Shakespeare theatre festival each summer better have an historic inn to put people up. The Parlour Inn is Stratford's best bet, and it's not quite as outrageously priced as its Niagara-on-the-Lake counterparts.

Breadalbane Inn

Located in Fergus, an underrated town about five kilometres from Elora, this quaint inn has 10 suites, a handful of which feature exposed brick in the main building that dates back to 1860. This makes for an ideal home base when exploring the many treats the Grand River has to offer.

Harbour House

Consistently ranked the top of the crop in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Harbour House exudes country charm but has enough modern amenities to justify the premium rates charged here. It's slightly away from the main hub of activity in the town, but that's probably a good thing given its proximity to the marina and shoreline.

Woodlawn Inn

Perched in the heart of Cobourg, the Woodlawn is a stately old inn dating back to the 19th century. It's a bit more reasonable price-wise than inns to the west of Toronto (rooms start at $99), but it's still outfitted with charming decor and boasts the best dining experience in the town.

8 essential things to do on a Toronto summer vacation

$

0

Toronto truly comes alive during the summertime, making it a great time to spend a few days here whether as a tourist or as part of a staycation. While mainstream attractions like the CN Tower, St. Lawrence Market and the Aquarium might seem like obvious choices, there are plenty of other unique spots to check out.

Here are some essential places you need to go while on summer vacation in Toronto.

Go on a brewery crawl

Toronto's craft beer scene is blowing up. While there are plenty of breweries on the city's west side, check out some of our new arrivals in the east, such as Eastbound Brewing Company, Radical Road Brewing, Left Field and Rorschach Brewing, which is located in a 100-year-old mansion.

Dine at one of Toronto's hot new restaurants

Toronto's a haven for food lovers, so come hungry. Head to Parkdale for an Eastern European feast at the just opened Tennessee Tavern. Take in the California vibe at the Italian spot La Palma or fill up on Thai food at Kiin.

Explore the Junction Triangle

This west side neighbourhood might be tiny, but there's lots to do here. Take a stroll down Sterling Road and visit Henderson Brewing and then soak up those suds with food from the Drake Commissary. Afterwards, visit a contemporary art gallery and then stop at yet another place for beer, Halo Brewery or refuel with some Station Cold Brew.

Take a tour of Toronto's outrageous ice cream parlours

Ice cream is a big deal in Toronto, meaning you can travel all over the city with a cone in your hand. Try some activated charcoal-infused ice cream if you dare, grab a massive chimney cone or trek to the beautiful Beaches for a cake batter cone.

Sweat it out at fitness class

If you just need to spin, check out Toronto's new SoulCycle or hit up Ride Cycle Club, which is loosely affiliated with lululemon. To really see the city and get to know some of the people who live here, join a run club for a day and explore as you zoom down sidewalks and through parks.

Hunt for a new food truck

Toronto's food truck scene has welcomed a number of new entrants this year. There are now trucks serving up awesome dumplings and sushi burritos as well as some doling out arepas, pierogis and Cuban-style coffee.

Go green

It seems silly to leave off our parks when our slogan is "A City Within A Park." Check out some of Toronto's green spaces and escape from the concrete jungle. Take a stroll through High Park and visit the zoo, get lost in nature at Tommy Thomson Park or make like a local and picnic in Trinity Bellwoods Park on a warm, sunny afternoon.

Swim

The Toronto Islands might be off limits but there's still plenty of places to go for a dip. Get a day pass at one of these hotel swimming pools or save your money and take it outside at Sunnyside, Christie Pits, Donald D. Summerville or one of the many outdoor pools

Here are my picks for the top summertime treats in Kensington Market.

People really liked Carly Rae Jepsen's show with the Toronto symphony

Canadian pop queen Carly Rae Jepsen wowed Roy Thomson Hall on Saturday night after she performed hit after hit with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

This concert, in honour of Canada 150, packed the massive venue with more than 2,000 Carly Rae fans who were dancing and singing along throughout the show - something that rarely happens at the symphony.

Of course, along with its classical concerts the TSO has a series of pop performances, live movie scores, and it's even done shows with Second City.

However, it seems like Toronto really, really, really, really liked this weekend's concert, so let's make it a regular thing, maybe?

Massive new Ontario Place park now open

The long awaited Ontario Place Urban Park has finally opened to the public. Premier Kathleen Wynne and Tourism Minister Eleanor McMahon officially unveiled the new green space during a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning.

The 7.5 acre waterfront park goes by the name Trillium Park and William G. Davis Trail and represents phase one of the revitalization of the entire Ontario Place grounds.

The new green space features a meandering trail and boardwalk, a granite bluff composed of 1,700 tons of Muskoka granite stone, an open-air pavilion, and almost 1,200 trees that were planted to provide strategic shade and to fill in the natural features of the park.

Ontario Place's life as an amusement park ended back in 2012 at which time it was announced that the former parking lot space at the southeast portion of the grounds would be converted into the park that opened today.

It's been a long time coming, but the first glimpse looks very promising.

Toronto's second annual Taco Fest took over Ontario Place this weekend bringing a slew of vendors and eaters together to mow down on tacos, corn, ice cream and beer.

The event, from Taste Toronto, featured restaurants, food trucks and caterers slinging out favourites like tacos al pastor from Fonda Lola and chicken tinga from Playa Cabana as well as options that showcased flavours from both Mexico and around the world.

Here are my picks for the most epic tacos on offer this weekend.

Banh mi tacos from Los Vietnamita

Los Vietnamita which does Mexican and Vietnamese fusion, served up banh mi chicken, beef, fish and chorizo tacos.

This is what it was like at the MMVA awards in Toronto

Toronto played host to hundreds of screaming tweens and exhausted dads on Sunday night for the 2017 iHeartRadio Canada Much Music Video Awards.

Hosted by Brampton's Alessia Cara and Joe Jonas, the MMVAs honoured the best Canadian music videos from the past year.

Hours before the awards began, the area around queen and John was already teeming with music fans who braved the rainy weather.

Swarms of fans flocked Queen St. on Sunday. Photo by Hector Vasquez.

Most spectators were outfitted in rain smocks, many bearing signs like the cardboard flat I saw asking Shay Mitchell if she wanted pizza (yes), or the bristol board with a handwritten novella asking Shawn Mendes to prom (no).

On the red carpet, everyone looked fabulous. I spotted YouTube superstar Lilly Singh wearing a Love Thy Sister t-shirt.

Mariana's Trench kept it simple with their lead singer, Josh Ramsay, in a whipped cream bikini, and the rest of the members in bodysuits covered in balloons that were constantly popping.

KJ Apa had fans at the MMVAs. Photo by Hector Vasquez.

I was most excited to New Zealand's KJ Apa in the flesh. The horde of teens agreed, going absolutely wild when Apa and One Direction non-father Niall Horan arrived.

One girl sobbed relentlessly as they walked by, but if Riverdale has taught us anything, it’s that teens only find other teens attractive when they’re weirdly distant and emotionally unavailable.

By the time the main event started, there was electricity in the air. The hosting was on point, with both Cara and Jonas entertaining the crowd with their charisma and talent. Julia Michael’s performance was incredible, and Lorde was, of course, amazing.

Even the Arkells, who I have been wary of since their lead singer used to borrow my best friend’s notes at McMaster, made me fall in love with them.

As the show came to a close, I was struck by how many different people attended the MMVAs. I had expected it to be mostly rabid young fans who needed their Horan fixes but there really were all kinds of attendees.

If you weren't there you got to relive it through Snapchat or Instagram Stories. Photo by Hector Vasquez.

There was a woman in her late thirties in orthotic sandals, an older man in plaid with a backwards cap, even a couple with a little toddler who didn’t cry once, not even when Ed Sheeran won an award.

And they were all united by their one common interest- snapchatting for the entire duration of an awards show to their uninterested friends who could get a much better video of Post Malone online.

Laduree is opening in Toronto

Toronto's obsession with macarons might have cooled a bit, but things are sure to heat up again once the world's most famous macaron maker arrives in the city.

Ladurée is slated to open at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, marking the French brand's continued expansion into Canada.

In March 2016, Ladurée's first Canadian location debuted on Robson Street in Vancouver, generating two-hour long lineups on opening weekend. A year later, Vancouver got another Ladurée at the Holt Renfrew on Dunsmuir Street.

Macarons at the Ladurée cafes on the west coast start at $3 each.

Details remain sparse about the Toronto outpost, but you can expect to see a rainbow of macarons and gorgeous packaging once it's here.

If you're already craving a salted caramel macaron, you can visit Yorkdale's huge Nadège or any of our other local French patisseries.

If you're craving milk and cereal in Toronto, you'll have to eat it at home. That's because the city's newest cereal bar has abruptly closed its doors for good.

Silo13 spent a few short months dishing out $10 bowls of cereal, featuring about 100 varieties from around the world. It was one of those instantly popular places that became a social media darling.

According to a note on Silo13's website the owners are "contractually unable to disclose" why they're shutting down their newfangled food business.

"For reasons were are contractually unable to disclose, we are permanently closing our doors. Along with that, we are also shutting down our social media accounts," reads the note.

Silo13 is no longer on Instagram or Facebook. The note continues, "Please accept our sincerest apologies for this disappearance, and please believe that we did all that we could to prevent this from happening."
