Toronto searching for woman who walked in front of TTC bus

$

People are looking for the woman who famously blocked a TTC bus in protest earlier this month, but it's not why you might think.

Transit advocacy group TTCriders issued a statement today inviting the Lansdowne bus protester to their planned protest of the TTC budget on November 28 and they're hoping the unnamed woman will join them.

This afternoon they'll begin distributing flyers in the hope of finding the woman who was filmed walking in front of an overcrowded bus in the cold after she was denied entry.

The video has since gone viral and many commended the woman for taking a stand against overcrowding on Toronto's public transit.

"The 2018 TTC budget does nothing to tackle overcrowding, unreliable service, and long wait times," the statement reads.

TTC says it has no plans to roll out double decker buses

Many people might not know that at one point the TTC had double decker buses. They were first introduced back in 1922 and were a regular sight in the city through the 1940s.

But don't expect to see them on Toronto streets anytime soon.

It's long been a favourite pastime among TTC aficionados to dream up ways to bring back some of the nostalgia of years gone by and double decker buses check all the right boxes.

As Eddie Ho pointed out back in 2012, double decker buses could make sense for busy routes. They have more space, great views and could likely come at only an incremental cost.

Last year, local artist Adrian Badaraco took the dream a step further when he came up with a full realization of the double decker bus. It looked so realistic that some actually thought they were in the works.

Alas, they're not to be. TTC Executive Director of Corporate Communications Brad Ross confirms it's just a pipe dream and that the TTC currently has no plans to reintroduce the vehicles.

The TTC used to have a host of vehicles of varying functions, like the city's first horse drawn streetcar, carriage sleigh, and an electric streetcar, all of which are currently housed in storage and sadly not available for public viewing.

If you thought the installation of glass moats around Union Station was exciting, wait until you see what's below them.

Oakville's popular Danish Pastry House is opening its first downtown Toronto location next month inside the newly renovated Union Station. It's joining a number of other new food offerings from familiar names like Union Chicken and Loaded Pierogi.

Known especially for their cinnamon loaves, the Danish Pastry House offers a huge variety of baked goods like cremeboller (cream buns), smør firkanter (butter squares) and wienerstang (pastry sticks) to name a few.

They also have freshly baked bread and a big selection of kage (cake) that will no doubt send a heavenly scent wafting through the station.

A tentative opening date is set for December 5. In the meantime, you can get your hands on some høj snegl med crème (high snail with custard) now until November 30 at the pop up in Scotia Plaza or at their location inside Sherway Gardens.

The Roof Lounge at Toronto's Park Hyatt closing after 82 years

The famed Park Hyatt Roof Lounge is closing next month.

The bar has sat atop the hotel at Avenue and Bloor for the last 82 years where patrons became accustomed to its unreal view, elegant interior and legendary former bartender Joe Gomes who retired last year.

The hotel is about to undergo substantial renovations, a process that's expected to take at least two years. The lounge is expected to re-open once the renovations are complete.

Nearby Annex resident Margaret Atwood, the late Leonard Cohen and Jennifer Aniston are all among the well known faces who have reportedly had a drink or two here over the years.

Last night at a sort of farewell party, Mayor Tory, the Duchess of York and other guests mingled and reminisced about the place.

Renovations are slated to begin December 1.

Sold! Unreal mansion goes for $11.25 million in Toronto

What exactly constitutes a mansion can spur debate, but no one's going to argue that this palatial estate just off the Bridle Path isn't deserving of the designation. In addition to its sprawling square footage, it has sweeping grounds outfitted in the finest luxury amenities.

95 bayview ridge torontoThere's even a grotto. How many houses boast such a thing in Toronto?

Recently sold for $11.25 million, 95 Bayview Ridge had been on the market for over a year. Initially listed at just shy of $13 million in September 2016, after a few adjustments, it eventually settled at $12.2 million before it was snapped up around million bucks under listing.

95 bayview ridge torontoGiven that stature of the house, that's actually pretty good return. Many super high end houses like this one sit on the market for years and sell at considerably lower than their original list price.

95 bayview ridge torontoSo what did the buyer get? A lot. This one has all the big-time features you'd expect at this price point. Over and above the pool and grotto, there's a five-car garage, a movie theatre, sauna, wine cellar, games room, elevator, tennis court, and full-scale gym.

95 bayview ridge torontoWhile it's designed in a chateau-style, this house is actually less than a decade old. It's also considerably more spacious that the types of homes you'll find closer to downtown in this price range. You could practically get lost exploring the grounds.

95 bayview ridge torontoThe Essentials
95 bayview ridge torontoWhy it sold for what it did

Bayview Ridge is just off the Bridle Path, so that accounts for a bit of a discount against the eponymous street and others like Park Lane and High Point. Still, when you've got a property this size and a house this luxurious, anything less than $10 million is out of the question.

95 bayview ridge torontoWas it worth it?

I bet everyone walked away from this deal fairly happy. While the price is under asking, dream homes like this one tend to sit on the market for ages before being closed. Listed for just over a year, this house avoids that fate and welcomes new owners to its salt water grotto.

The Best French Restaurants in Toronto

$

The best French restaurants in Toronto cover a wide swath of variety, from classic steak frites in casual bistro settings to très chic dining rooms worthy of Champagne toasts. All manage to prove that this iconic cuisine will always have that certain je ne sais quoi.

Here are the best French restaurants in Toronto.

6 - Bar Begonia

Chef/restaurateur Anthony Rose owns many of the culinary hot spots on Dupont in the Annex, and this Parisian-style cocktail bar is no exception. French faves like mussels, sweetbreads and steak frites can be found on the dinner menu, while weekend brunch highlights include croque madame and duck confit hash.
11 - La Palette

Originating in Kensington Market but now located on Queen West, this lovely bistro is one of the few places in the city where horse tartare (a relatively normal thing to eat in France) is served. Escargots, foie gras and other quintessential French dishes make up the rest of the menu, from which a $37 prix fixe can be chosen. Brunch is also available daily.
3 - Cluny

This massive bistro in the Distillery District offers traditional fare like tableside beef tartare and French onion soup. There are also creative North American-French fusion takes on dishes like PB&J foie gras torchons and coq au vin poutine.
4 - Chantecler

A small, hip Parkdale spot with exposed brick and an open kitchen, it's evolved into a space serving up a French menu of oysters, frog legs and platters for two that include half- or whole duck with crepes or steak & bone marrow. A late-night menu features duck poutine with the option to add foie gras, for a little extra luxury.
5 - Chabrol

Tucked away in Yorkville, this tiny hidden gem of a boîte with just 19 seats inside (and a bit more when the front patio is open) is the epitome of French elegance. Elevated comfort food, from papillote of whitefish and deliciously soul-warming gratins to a glorious made-to-order apple tarte in a Calvados sabayon poured tableside, will transport you to the City of Lights.
7 - Jules Bistro (Queen Street)

With three locations across the city (on Spadina, West Queen West and in Leslieville), this casual bistro offers a popular prix fixe starting at $28.95/person with options like French onion soup, steak frites and crème brûlée. Opt for the deluxe version and selections upgrade to scallops, rack of lamb or even magret de canard.
8 - Le Select Bistro

Francophiles flock to this bistro on Wellington with vintage posters and an ambience that makes patrons feel like they’re dining in Paris. Classic French fare, including essentials like steak frites, bouillabaisse, confit de canard and cassoulet, are all on the menu, plus weekend brunch options that include eggs benedict, French toast and quiche Lorraine.
9 - Auberge du Pommier

Oliver & Bonacini’s fairytale-like French restaurant in North York exudes a charming cottage-y vibe, with upscale, contemporary takes on dishes that include foie gras, côte de bœuf and truite de mer. A tasting menu with optional wine pairing is available in addition to its à la carte offerings.
10 - Gare de l'Est

Find this brasserie inside the Streetcar Crowsnest venue in Leslieville. Using local ingredients, crowd-pleasers like French onion soup, moules frites and steak haché are available on the menu, and they also make up some of the choices on the $36 three-course theatre prix fixe for dinners prior to performances.

What a $1,750 apartment looks like in Toronto right now

You can find some pretty nice places to live for $1,750 a month in downtown Toronto – you just have to be cool with combining your living room, dining room, bedroom and office into a space that’s roughly the size of a bathroom on the Bridle Path (or walk-in closet, if you’re lucky.)

Here's what a $1,750 apartment looks like in Toronto right now.

$1,750 for proximity to The Drake Hotel
apartments in Toronto

Location is what you'll be paying for in the new(ish) Edge condo development near Dovercourt and Queen. This 460-square-foot unit itself is tiny, but you'll literally be living in the heart of one of the coolest neighbourhoods on Earth.

$1750 for uniquely laid out loft in Corktown

apartments in Toronto

This industrial-chic loft is cool on so many levels, from its exposed concrete columns to its trendy, up-and-coming location in River City. Floor-to-ceiling windows and 9-foot ceilings make this relatively small condo feel airy and spacious.

$1775 above a Subway in Harbord Village

Apartments in TorontoEat Fresh™ all the time, or at least smell like you do! You won't find stainless steel appliances in this 1 bedroom on Harbord Street, but its super bright, close to U of T, has ensuite laundry, a working brick fireplace and it's way bigger than the average condo at this price point.

$1,750 for a tiny slice of luxury in the Entertainment District

Apartments in TorontoAt just 390 square feet, this condo in the fancy new Bisha Residences will be hard, if not impossible to entertain in. I mean, it's got half-size appliances, no bedroom and no balcony – but who cares when you have access to a celebrity-endorsed, 44th floor rooftop lounge and pool?

$1,750 for a relative palace at Bloor and Islington
Apartments in Toronto

This recently renovated 2-bedroom apartment is in an older building, but it's surrounded by new retail developments. It's also huge for how much it costs. Just steps from Islington station, it's a good option for those who work downtown but want less bustle in their home lives.

Toronto Police poke fun at attempted car heist

A riot broke out yesterday but not the kind you're thinking.  A video of an attempted car heist posted on Twitter by the The Toronto Police gave everyone on the force a good chuckle.

The video shows a young man hurling a rock at a car window in an attempt to either vandalize the car or steal it, or both, only to have it ricochet back and hit him in the chest.

His amateurish attempt to steal the car was unsuccessful and he quickly retreated to pursue some other endeavour.

Toronto Police took the time to point out that not everyone is cut out to be a car vandal.

Toronto just started installing real-time traffic signals

Today is a special day for drivers in Toronto as the first smart signal traffic lights programmed to respond to real-time traffic trends and patterns were installed this morning.

The new lights are designed to access traffic data and make real-time adjustments based on patterns, as opposed to to the city's current 2,339 lights that are pre-programmed and don't adjust to changing conditions.

Mayor John Tory helped unveil ten new lights on Yonge St. in North Toronto this morning. The very first one went up at the corner of Yonge St. and Yonge Boulevard.

The new signals are part of a one year pilot project that will test two different technologies, InSync and SCATS. The former makes changes based on video-analysis while the latter uses radar detection.

Toronto street ranked 6th most expensive in North America

A Toronto street has just been ranked the sixth most expensive in North America, the most expensive street in Canada, and the 25th most expensive in the world.

Real estate giant Cushman & Wakefield recently released its annual review of Main Streets Across the World for 2017 that compared Bloor Street to other major thoroughfares based on rent per square foot.

Rankings show Bloor St. as the 6th most expensive in North America. Source: Cushman & Wakefield.

New York's Upper 5th Avenue tops the list as the world's most expensive retail stretch, spanning 11 blocks across the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Bloor Street between Yonge and University, known locally as The Mink Mile because of its high concentration of luxury stores, easily outstrips Robson Street in Vancouver and rue Sainte-Catherine O in Montreal for Canadian bragging rights.

Looking to live on Canada's most expensive street? It's worth noting that it's also home to two of the most expensive condo locations in the city too.

The Building Industry and Land Development Association reported that condos sales were the highest they've been in the 15 years since it began tracking data for the GTA.

Of the incredible 5,377 new homes sold in October, the vast majority, about 91 per cent, were a mix of condo apartments in low and mid-rise buildings, multi-family homes, and stacked town homes.

This is partly due to both the scarcity and appreciation of low-rise, single family homes, which comprised the remaining 9 per cent of sales last month.

So far this year, 39,476 new homes have been sold in the GTA, 82 per cent of them condos in high and low-rise buildings and stacked town houses, averaging about $677,456 a pop.

By comparison, single-family homes averaged about $1.22 million, up a smidgen (0.9 per cent) from September.

As the TTC continues to search for ways to entice people to use it, a staff report recommends implementing time-based transfers possibly as early as next August.

The report released today outlines a plan that would apply exclusively to Presto card users, letting them get on and off public transit as many times as they want within a two hour window.

This recommendation comes as TTC ridership numbers have flatlined for the first time in more than a decade and is supported by many local business owners who say the plan will help boost revenue along the city's busiest transit routes.

Of course nothing comes for free. The TTC says the move will cost the city $11 million next year and $21 million by 2020.

A moose is on the loose in Toronto

The country has met the city today as the police are tracking a renegade moose just north of Toronto.

The bull moose was seen running through the residential streets of Markham at Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue earlier today.

According to the CBC, the OPP are urging drivers to practice caution while driving, as an animal of that size could easily pose a serious risk of injury.

A spokesperson for the OPP's Highway Safety Division said that the moose likely wandered down from the Rouge River where it lives.

Many have been quick to point out the obvious Canadian-ness of the story.

As of yet, the moose has not been captured and is being closely tracked by Ministry of Natural Resources officials. You can watch the progress live

The Prime Minister of Canada sure is popular. If you don't believe that just take a look at what happened on Wednesday when he tried to visit Bridlewood Mall in Scarborough.

Prime minister came here for 3 mins then left🤩🤩🤩#justintrudeau#bridlewoodmall#

Trudeau was scheduled to appear there for a routine meet and greet but was swarmed by a massive crowd of over 500 people before he even had a chance to reach the food court.

Apparently the massive turnout was unexpected and the PM was escorted out by security personnel within a span of about three minutes.

The stop coincided with Trudeau's visit to Toronto to announce the National Housing Strategy which looks to invest over $30 billion into Canada's housing over the next 11 years.

Black Friday sales got underway in Toronto today as stores and malls across the city swelled with people on the hunt for a good deal.

Unlike our neighbours to the south who are known to get pretty rowdy at the sight of a marked down potato peeler, everything was mostly civil with Best Buy employees at Bay and Dundas even greeting customers with a cheerful round of applause as they entered the store.

Shoppers seamed eager to empty their pockets at the many stores offering deals with 30% discounts a common sight.

It's anticipated that the average Canadian will spend around $1,400 on gifts this holiday season from both in-store and online retailers.

One big plus is that the Canadian dollar is slowly on the rise, so spend away, friends.

Yorkdale Shopping Centre just keeps on rolling. They welcomed a new location for Drake's OVO store, saw epic lineups for The Cheesecake Factory and just launched a pop-up space where you can get cheesecake on a stick.

Now the world's most famous macaron maker will be opening its first Toronto location at the mall. We knew earlier this year that Ladurée was coming but now we know approximately when it's opening.

This will be Ladurée’s third Canadian location, following the two in downtown Vancouver. You'll be able to find it in Yorkdale's luxury wing across from Saint Laurent.

According to Retail Insider the new Toronto location will feature a retail area as well as a 26-seat tea salon, with a menu similar to the Robson Street location in Vancouver.
