Condo of the week: 245 Carlaw Avenue

Both weirdly nostalgic and romantic, the penthouse condo is the kind of space that looks like an apartment set you’d see in a Zooey Deschanel TV show rather than real life.

245 carlaw ave toronto

Located inside the Wrigley Lofts the place has oversized vintage metal windows to die for. They’re 30 feet and bring in plenty of natural light.

245 carlaw ave torontoThe main floor is open concept but staging isn’t amazing - I’m not sure it was staged at all. But if you can look past some of the tragic Ikea furniture you’ll see it’s a gorgeous minimalist space.

245 carlaw ave torontoWhen entering the foyer there’s the bright glow from the giant windows that bounces off polished concrete floors, making it an almost  "walking into heaven" experience.

245 carlaw ave torontoThere’s also a ton of custom built-in storage spaces so you’ll never have trouble keeping up that minimalist style.

245 carlaw ave torontoThe kitchen comes with all the bells and whistles, including custom built cabinets, granite counters, Italian marble backsplash and top of the line stainless steel appliances.

245 carlaw ave torontoThe bedroom, located upstairs, is spacious and bright. The pillars in the corners look like those found in old theaters, adding a sense of drama to the bedroom.

245 carlaw ave torontoThere’s a newly renovated bathroom, which has spa-like features.

245 carlaw ave torontoIt’s also worth mentioning there’s not an ounce of outdoor space that comes with this penthouse suite. So if you had visions of smoking a cigarette on your fire escape you’ll be disappointed.

245 carlaw ave torontoThis Leslieville loft sold last year for $1.03 million. Now, exactly one year later it’s back on the market with a brand spanking new bathroom. Can you say condo flipping? That being said I don’t know if they'll get the $50,000 more for just a bathroom upgrade, but you can’t fault them for trying.

Good For

A Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe - esque couple. This loft space seems perfect for artists who want a home/studio. The high ceilings, white walls, and giant windows make this place perfect for fostering creativity and providing a romantic backdrop for any impromptu photoshoots.  245 carlaw ave toronto

Move On If

You aren’t prepared to spend a ton on heating. The unfortunate downside to original factory windows is that they’re really bad at keeping heat in. That combined with the soaring ceilings means your hydro bill in the winter could induce heart attacks.

Toronto in awe of damage caused by strong winds

0
0

Ontario continues to reel this morning from the fallout of a wind storm that snapped construction cranes in half, toppled a giant KFC bucket into someone's car and left some 80,000 people without power on Wednesday.

The severe winds (and yes, snow) had died down in Toronto as of Thursday morning, but not before claiming a lot of trees...

And fences...

And garbage bins...

And sheds...

And road signs.

A lot of road signs.

Wigs have been lost, and flights have been delayed.

In some parts of the region, gusts nearing 100 km/h blew bricks clean off of buildings.

Construction equipment proved similarly vulnerable to the storm, as evidenced by a now-famous broken crane.

Someone on Reddit woke up this morning to find a canoe atop his neighbour's roof, while others found tons of missing shingles.

Traffic lights are still been reported as out, broken, or missing in some parts of the city.

The iconic Golden Star burger joint in Thornhill lost its longstanding sign last night, much like the KFC whose giant fried chicken bucket crushed a cab in Hamilton.

Kennedy Commons in Scarborough almost lost its sign too, though perhaps with less expensive consequences.

Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported in connection with last night's wind storm – and hey, at least the teens are having fun!

Toronto is about to get an influx of wild bee sanctuaries

0
0

A new projectis appealing to wildlife enthusiasts, amateur botanists and anyone with a garden to help welcome back and care for the over 300 species of bees that call Toronto home.

The BIMBY (Bees in My Backyard) Project from the David Suzuki Foundation hopes to help the bee population in the city by encouraging Toronto residents to install bee sanctuaries in homes or community gardens.

Residents would then work alongside researchers to monitor the bees from about May to October each year.

Getting bees in your backyard won't be free, though. You'll need to pony up $125 that will help cover the costs of the "wild bee hotel" as well as data collection.

Beekeeping has become a popular activity around the city, with beekeeping workshops regularly offered and companies like Alvéole helping to make urban beekeeping more accessible.

Recently, a downtown real estate company adopted hives on the roofs of several condo buildings and produced batches of honey for its residents.

Although the population is on the rebound, a large number of bees have disappeared in different parts of the world due to climate change, widespread pesticide use and habitat loss.

For anyone looking to take part in the BIMBY project, training is available beginning April 18.

Drake kisses ESPN broadcaster Doris Burke at Raptors game

0
0

Drake and Doris, sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-on-the-cheek!

The Toronto Raptors extended their NBA Eastern Conference lead last night at the ACC with an important 96-78 victory over the Boston Celtics and, naturally, Champagne Papi was there to cheer for his team.

Also present was Doris Burke — the 52-year-old ESPN analyst and former basketball player who just so happens to be the apple of our boy's eye.

You could cut the romantic tension with a knife, if you were Drake.

Up until last night, Drizzy hadn't actually met Burke in person — not formally — though he did reportedly make "heart hands" at her during a game in 2016.

Still, the Canadian music artist's super-crush is very well known among NBA fans.

Drake has professed his love for Burke publicly on several occasions, once while wearing a shirt with her face and the words "Woman Crush Everyday" on it.

He also asked her to dinner on live TV a few years back. Burke responded to the invitation later on Twitter, writing: "Dinner is on [heart emoji]."

With both parties at the Raptors game last night, fans of this unusual courtside romance were on high alert — and even more so after Drizzy shared a video of his dream woman on Instagram Stories.

Burke has laughed off the whole Drake crush situation before, confirming to New York Magazine in 2016 that she'd never actually met or gone to dinner with the rapper.

This made their encounter last night all the more special... at least for young Aubrey.

Drake was seen walking up to Burke at one point while she was calling the game with fellow ESPN host Mike Breen.

"Perhaps not surprisingly, Drake went right in for a kiss," reported Uproxx.

It was just a kiss on the cheek, plus a warm hug and a few words said while holding hands, but it was enough to solicit some giggles from Drizzy.

Breen joked about the encounter later during the broadcast, pointing out again that Drake is a huge fan of Burke.

"I'm appreciative of that Mike," she replied. "… he made my life a hell of a lot more fun for a couple of weeks last year."

Vegan protesters are returning to Antler restaurant tonight

0

Animal rights activists will once again stage a protest in front of Toronto's now-famous Antler restaurant on Thursday evening, this time to educate the public about "speciesism."

"Rather than bow to the vicious online backlash, organizer Marni Jill Ugar is leading another protest tonight at Antler," reads a release from the group, referring to the fallout of a demonstration that garnered international media attention for both the restaurant and protesters last week.

"Ugar plans to educate the public and the chef Michael Hunter, about 'Speciesism'," it continues. "Large TV screens showing footage will be held by protestors."

"Afterwards the activists will walk to McDonalds - many have suggested big business should be the target - will this please the haters?"

Antler has been in the spotlight now for more than a week after video footage went viral of the restaurant's co-owner chopping up a deer leg in front of vegan protesters.

Reservations are said to be soaring for the small Dundas West restaurant, which is known to serves foraged and wild foods that are native to Canada, such as bison, boar, rabbit, duck and deer.

The fact that they seem to be helping Antler get more business hasn't seemed to deter protesters, however.

Their demonstration tonight will be the second to take place outside Antler since news of Hunter's deer leg counter-protest broke, and the sixth they've staged in recent months.

"Our approach: love based, calm, no fighting, no shouting, no shoving. We hold signs, have dialogue, educate," said Ungar in the press release.

"We are there to stand up for animals not attack anyone, the business or the customers. All signs should be about animals not an attack on Michael Hunter."

Co-organizer Jenny McQueen explains that Antler was targeted, specifically, because Hunter posted a sign saying outside his restaurant that read "Venison is the new Kale."

"His posts on Instagram glorify the killing of animals for their meat and for their fur," said McQueen. "Joking about animal death is no longer accepted as being morally acceptable."

The giant rubber duck won't be returning to Toronto this summer

0
0

It's with a heavy heart that we announce that the giant rubber duck won't be gracing the shores of Toronto again this summer.

The World's Largest Rubber Duck made waves when it arrived last summer as part of Canada's sesquicentennial celebrations, delighting some and angering others.

A post shared by Brüha (@bruhaexclusive) on

Some wondered what the duck had to do with anything besides being oversized and overpriced, but it turned out to be an irresistible force that brought in enough selfies to make bank and silence the haters.

The duck is actually a travelling art piece by Florentijn Hofman that had been touring around the world since 2007 before making a stop in Toronto.

A post shared by Shangni Hu (@shangnihu) on

News of this year's upcoming Waterfront Festival shows that it still has tons of stuff going on like live performances, food and shopping.

But alas - no duck.

Toronto women's only ride-sharing startup suspends service

0
0

It's been almost three weeks since the launch of Toronto's own female-centric, alternative ride-sharing service, DriveHER, and things are going... very poorly.

The company just announced that its services will "be unavailable until further notice" on account of a data breach that gave hackers access to the names, photos, genders, profile photos, phone numbers, home addresses and even drivers licenses of its users.

"As a precautionary measure, we are writing to let you know about a data security incident that may involve your information on March 30th -April 3rd, 2018," reads an email sent to registered members on Wednesday.

"To our knowledge, the data accessed did not include any credit card information."

DriveHer data breach

An email was sent to registered users of the app on Wednesday to explain that the security of their personal data had been compromised.

With more than 1,000 downloads of the app, that's a lot of private info potentially leaked from the phones of women in Toronto.

The company says that it's conducting a review into the incident, and that it will be implementing additional security measures to prevent a recurrence.

In the meantime, DriveHER has told drivers and riders that it is "going through a maintenance check."

"We are fixing things up," reads an image posted to Instagram yesterday. "We'll be right back!"

The startup's founder, Aisha Addo, confirmed to the Toronto Star that public access to the platform is currently blocked off and that the threat has been addressed and contained.

Still, for an app that pegs its entire existence on safety and security, this is a bad look. It could even prove fatal for the service's future.

Any customers who were still keen on using DriveHER after weeks of technical glitches might just be turned off enough by the data breach to delete the app in favour of Uber or Lyft.

That said, public support for the project was overwhelming at launch. If Uber can survive the many, many scandals it has been embroiled in, anything could happen.

Getting tickets for this event won't be easy, though, as priority is being given to Le Jardin members.

Toronto Zoo planning luxury glamping and zip-lining retreat

The Toronto Zoo is getting bigger, better, and a bit more bougie, too.

City Council recently approved a plan that will allow the zoo to expand its borders sometime in the near future. It plans to use this land for breeding as well as to grow food to feed its animals.

Now here's where things get interesting and a little bit controversial.

One of many massive, planned additions to the zoo includes a Carolinian Forest habitat where Zoo visitors can observe the plants and animals that make their home in the Rouge River valley.

Toronto Zoo

This map from the Master Plan, composed in 2016, shows how the zoo plans to lay out its Carolinian Forest attraction. Image via the Toronto Zoo.

There's also going to be a wilderness boardwalk that will wind its way through the trees.

toronto zoo

A rendering of the proposed boardwalk set to run through the Toronto Zoo's Carolinian Forest zone. Image via the Toronto Zoo.

And there's more. They're also planning to build an aerial gondola that will run through the forest's treetops, connecting an orientation plaza and a retail store and snack bar.

More interesting still is the addition of a fancy new overnight stay area right next to the idyllic forest path.

"High-end glamping in 'Raven's Roost' provides luxury treetop cabins for rent, featuring stunning views over the valley in a unique, Canadian Carolinian forest canopy experience," reads the zoo's planning documents.

"Sitting amongst the trees along the ridgeline overlooking the Rouge Valley, 'Raven’s Roost' will become a year-round family and small-group 'glamping' retreat."

Tree-top trekking and zip-lining through the Rouge Valley are also some of the planned attractions.

Toronto Zoo glamping

This image is included in the Toronto Zoo's future planning book to illustrate the type of high-end glamping customers will someday have the opportunity to experience. Image via Toronto Zoo.

Sounds cool, but I wouldn't go booking off time just yet.

Construction isn't even set to start on the treetop cabins until at least 2024 – and there's no way of knowing how much it'll cost to stay there once it's ready.

A phasing plan and cost summary chart shows that the zoo plans to spend about $6,278,000 on building the glamping retreat alone.

Those are some mighty big costs to recoup. Fingers crossed pizza doesn't get anymore expensive. Is that even possible?

TIFF offering cheaper ticket prices for this year's film festival

0
0

The 43rd Toronto International Film Festival is still a good five months away, but it's never to early to start thinking about tickets if you actually want to score some.

TIFF announced in a press release on Thursday that packages for this year's fest, which runs from September 6 to 16, will go on sale for members on May 23.

The general public will have to wait a bit longer — until June 20 — but the process promises to be easier, more flexible, and cheaper for 2018 than ever before.

"TIFF is adding more convenience for filmgoers by increasing the number of reserved ticket venues from two to four," reads the release. "In 2017, TIFF successfully added reserved seating at Roy Thomson Hall and Princess of Wales Theatre and this year ticket buyers will be able to choose their seats at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres as well."

On top of that, festival organizers are introducing three-tiered ticket prices at all venues with reserved seats.

The first tier of tickets starts at just $18, while premium tickets will go for between $25 and $75.

Film lovers under 25 have it best, though, with the return of TIFF's $10 daytime screening ticket, available Monday through Friday for people 24 years of age and younger.

As always, individual tickets won't be available for purchase until much closer to the festival itself. TIFF Patron Circle Members can start snapping those up in late August. The rest of us can go after what's left on September 3.

Sold! Toronto semi with cozy basement apartment goes for $1.1 million

There are many times in life I wish I was a trust fund baby or just rich so I could invest in real estate. This house is one of those moments.

115 salem ave toronto The home is located near Dovercourt Park and is already split up into three one bedroom apartments, all with separate entrances, making it the perfect place to rent out. Even the listing said: “live in one, while the others pay your mortgage.”

115 salem ave toronto You’d be foolish not to follow the listing's advice. The house is delightful and who doesn’t like help paying their mortgage?

115 salem ave toronto The main floor unit is bright and warm with wooden floors. There’s also touches of character peppered throughout the suite, such as the antique pocket door.

115 salem ave toronto The kitchen on the main floor seems like it was built in a hallway as an afterthought rather and the washing machine and dryer are very visible. But the essentials are there.

115 salem ave toronto Upstairs is the second unit, which has a big bay window and a really funky ceiling. It also walks out onto a sun-soaked deck.

115 salem ave toronto The last apartment in the basement is one of the nicer basement units I’ve seen. There’s a big kitchen, spacious bedroom, and a four-piece bathroom.

115 salem ave toronto Round back there's a comfortable backyard where you could throw a whole house BBQ. Although from the pictures it looks like it could use some sod.

115 salem ave toronto This place might not be a stunning mansion or luxury condo but it is one hell of a rental home and it's not even a little shocking that it went for more than its asking price.

The Essentials
  • Address: 115 Salem Avenue
  • Type: Semi-detached house
  • Bedrooms: 2+1
  • Bathrooms: 3
  • Size: 17.75 x 102 feet
  • Realtor: Sotheby’s Realty
  • Hit the market at: $989,000
  • Sold for: $1,100,000115 salem ave toronto
Why it sold for what it did?

I’m guessing because someone saw this as a great investment opportunity. Monthly rent is around $3,300 in this area and there are three ready-to-move-in apartments. You do the math.

115 salem ave toronto Was it worth it?

Are you kidding? With the way rental prices are going in Toronto the mortgage will be paid off in no time and then once the mortgage is paid off you get rental income. I’m sure there are downsides to being a landlord but honestly, it seems like one of the easiest and most lucrative gigs out there right now.115 salem ave toronto

The Best Eggs Benedict in Toronto

0
0

The best Eggs Benedict in Toronto combine the best elements of an epic breakfast in a variety of ways, but the building blocks are always there: a sturdy base, savoury toppings, perfectly poached egg, and a silken layer of sauce. These are the places to get your yolk porn on.

Here are the best Eggs Benedict in Toronto.

4 - Lady Marmalade

The mango salsa, cheddar and bacon benny at this Leslieville breakfast standby is an all-time favourite.
5 - Emma's Country Kitchen

Homestyle breakfasts are the specialty of this St. Clair West cafe, and the Eggs Benedict here are exemplary of that with thick slabs of ham, smothered in hollandaise and accompanied by potatoes and fruit.
11 - Lisa Marie

If you don’t know what a bacon explosion is, it's bacon wrapped around spicy pork sausage and crumbled bacon, and it comes between brioche and spicy hollandaise on the benny at this Queen West favourite.
7 - Farmhouse Tavern

Check the ever-changing chalkboard menu for options like kale, bacon or gravlax bennies at this locally-focused Junction Triangle restaurant.
8 - Hollandaise Diner

Your Eggs Benedict can get as wild as your imagination at this East Danforth diner where you can build your own. Choose from bases like polenta patties, bitter greens, or spicy beef patties, and top them with artichoke, goat cheese, turkey bacon or zucchini, and top it off with hollandaises like maple espresso or cajun.
9 - The Federal Reserve

At this Dundas West joint famed for its breakfasts you'll find a creative twist on their Eggs Benedict with bacon, substituting tarragon mushroom cream for hollandaise.
10 - Early Bird Espresso

Instagram-worthy bennies that are almost too beautiful to eat come on potato latkes with avocado and a bright fuschia beet-infused hollandaise at this Queen West espresso bar.
3 - Dirty Food

Drake makes surprise appearance at Toronto nightclub

Everyone's favourite Degrassi teen-turned-rap superstar thrilled his hometown fans last night by unexpectedly popping up at Rebel nightclub in Toronto.

At first blush, it looked like Drake was just there to show support for his friends and collaborators Majid Jordan, who were playing a show at the time.

It's not unusual for the 6ix God to bless other artists, after all, when they're in Toronto, by dropping a few bars onstage.

One time for the 6 god ❗️❗️❗️

The crowd at Rebel did get a mini-concert out of Drake last night, complete with some beautiful dad dancing, but they also got the inside scoop on something huge.

"If you're from the city and you're proud to be Canadian make some noise for my brothers," he shouted after performing "God's Plan," pointing to Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman.

"Imma tell you, OVO, we a family. I'm so proud of these guys right here."

"The reason I'm here tonight is because I'm back in the city finishing my album," he announced to the screaming crowd.

"I got a new single dropping tomorrow night too, just in case you got some free time."

Ooooh!

That's right – Drake himself has confirmed that Drake is dropping a new single on Friday, April 6, likely at night (as is his way.)

It's unclear as to which song he'll be releasing, or if it will be from his forthcoming album, though Rap-Up notes that the artist told Instagram Live viewers last month he was working on a new single with Murda Beatz.

This will be the first new song release from Drake since his EP Scary Hours, which included both "God's Plan" and "Diplomatic Immunity."

Keep an eye on Apple Music, Tidal, and Spotify tonight if you're keen.

When the new studio album finally drops, it'll be Drake's fifth ever, and the first to be released since Views in 2016.

Teen who was tackled by fare inspectors sues TTC for millions

A teenager who was filmed struggling against the weight of five TTC fare inspectors and Toronto police officers earlier this year has launched a lawsuit seeking damages of more than $3 million in connection with the incident.

The 19-year-old male, who is black, alleges in a statement of claim that he had been riding the streetcar on February 18 when he was grabbed, thrown to the ground face first, and pinned for an extended period of time by multiple TTC employees.

Another streetcar passenger, Bethany McBride, caught video footage of the incident in question and posted it to Facebook that same day.

"On my streetcar, a black teenaged boy shoved a fare collector who put his hands on him," she wrote when sharing the video. "And this happens. They held him down screaming for twenty minutes."

The teen was released without charge after 30-40 minutes of being detained by three TTC fare inspectors and, later, two Toronto police officers.

At least one TTC fare inspector was suspended as a result of the altercation a few days later.

Lawyers claim that the young man suffered "serious physical and psychological injuries" at the hands of transit agency workers, and that he is the victim of unlawful detention, assault, battery, negligence, discrimination, harassment and racial profiling.

The lawsuit, which was filed against The Toronto Transit Commission, the Toronto Police Services Board, three individual TTC fare inspectors and two police officers on March 29, states that transit staffers did not identify themselves to the teen nor explain at any point why he was being detained.

Neither TTC workers nor police responded to his cries for help, according to the suit, or provide medical attention despite the presence of an obvious head wound.

When asked for comment, the TTC told CityNews this week that it would not be addressing the lawsuit until an internal review is complete.

Police said similarly that "it would be inappropriate to comment on this incident now that a statement of claim has been filed."

The teen and his mother, who is said to be dependent on him for care, are seeking more than $3 million in collective damages, as well as "special damages in a sum to be disclosed before trial.
