This week in theatre rounds up the most noteworthy live theatre playing right now in Toronto. It includes just-opened shows as well as productions that are about to close.
Speaking in Tongues / Berkeley Street Theatre / 8:00pm/1:30pm / $22-$47
The Company Theatre's newest gritty drama is from Australian playwright Andrew Bovell. It features a narrative with nine interlocking lives marked by infidelity and a mysterious stiletto. Their production of The Test was one of the best productions on Toronto stages last year. Philip Riccio directs Richard Clarkin, Jonathan Goad, Helene Joy, and Yanna MacIntosh, characters blurring the line between right and wrong.
The War of the Worlds / Harbourfront Centre - Enwave Theatre / 8:00pm/2:00pm / $25-$59
Orson Welles' The War of the Worlds changed radio forever with its realistic portrayal of the landing of extraterrestrials. The Art of Time Ensemble presents the radio drama with a live band, sound effects, and film mix. Featuring Nicholas Campbell, Sean Cullen, and Marc Bendavid, this remount of the sold-out 2011 production is sure to illuminate new perspectives on the original broadcast.
Endgame / Soulpepper - Young Centre / 7:30pm/1:30pm / $20-$68
Soulpepper's orginal production of Samuel Beckett's Endgame, in only their second season, proved to audiences that the company was a fresh new voice on the Toronto theatre scene. The production returns this season with Daniel Brooks once again at the helm, with peformances from Diego Matamoros, Eric Peterson, Maria Vacratsis and Joseph Ziegler. The absurdist piece is, by now, well known—Hamm, a blind man immobilized in a wheelchair, barks orders to Clov, while Nell and Nagg pop up every so often from their trashcans.
The Hours That Remain / Aki Studio Theatre, Daniels Spectrum / 8:00pm/12:30pm / $11-$23
Keith Baker explores the stretch of BC's Highway of Tears, where a number of Aboriginal women have gone missing over the years, in The Hours That Remain. The production, directed by David Storch, christens the newly opened Aki Studio Theatre. The black-box theatre is the permanent home of Native Earth Performing Arts in the Daniels Spectrum, the new arts and cultural centre in Regent Park.
in 40 years / Sterling Studio Theatre / 8:00pm/2:30pm / $10
Writer/Director Bobby Del Rio, best known for The Market and Porn Life, presents a new work at the Sterling Studio Theatre. Del Rio has created a movement-based theatre piece based on an original poetry collection about love. Featuring a multicultural cast and the grace of a dance show, the play is presented in the west's newest theatre, a 50-seat multi-purpose venue, occupying Unit 5 at 163 Sterling Road.
