Toronto Maple Leafs unveil first new logo in 45 years

New Toronto Maple Leafs logoThe Toronto Maple Leafs unveiled a new logo tonight, the team's first since 1970. Yes, if there's one thing that's remained consistent in Leafland, it's the carefully managed branding of the franchise, one of the most valuable in the sporting world. Well, that and not winning Stanley Cups, I suppose.

But, hey, this freshly revealed logo is all about new directions. If ever there was a time to re-brand it's now. Even if the team is currently one of the NHL's bottom-feeders, with Brendan Shanahan, Lou Lamoriello and Mike Babcock running the ship, there's plenty of reason for optimism that the Leafs might get back to the successes of the 1960s.

And that's exactly what this new logo gestures too. Its look is thoroughly old school. The leaf itself looks like the 1960s era logo, but the font has been updated. There are other subtle differences, too. There are less points on the leaf (31 as opposed to 35), but the idea is clear: the franchise wants to look back as it looks forward.

toronto maple leafs logoThe team also revealed a new logo for the Toronto Marlies, one which uses the same shape of maple leaf, but is adorned with the crown logo associated with the team. It's actually quite nice looking, if you ask me.

What do you think of the new design? Let us know in the comments.

New Toronto condo designed to be a forest in the sky

33 Avenue Road condoIf there's one thing that Toronto condos tend to lack, it's obvious signs of greenery. Even as the city slowly outgrows the glass-box phase that defined the construction of these buildings through much of the 2000s, it's rare to see an architecture firm dream up what some refer to as a vertical forest.

Perhaps the reasons for this are obvious. Toronto experiences cold winters, weather that's unkind to a facade that's meant to be a living and breathing entity. That's what makes the new designs for 33 Avenue Road exciting. As Urban Toronto reports, the city might get a mini version of Stefano Boeri's Bosco Verticale.

33 Avenue Road condoBefore you get too excited, I should qualify that these designs show something considerably less dramatic than the now famous pair of buildings in Milan. Still, given our climate and general lack of greenery, the Scott Torrance-designed exterior would be a most welcome addition to the Toronto skyline.

At 30-storeys, this is a building with significant stature. Even if the green elements are on only two of its four sides, the initiative to try such a design is what's promising here. Condo designs are getting more interesting in Toronto over time, but the trend will continue only if architects and developers take some risks.

Bar Raval
Grant Van Gameren's Spanish pinxtos bar on College Street is a sculptural feat of Gaudí-inspired woodwork designed by Toronto studio Partisans. Voluptuous mahogany arches and bows entwine room while fun details include stainless steel drip trays incorporate the wu-tan logo into lacy majolica-like patterns.

Rush Lane
Neon signage lights the way through the turquiose facade of this Queen West bar and into a gorgeously-lit 1970's-themed room furnished with tufted leather sofas and lounge chairs. A fish tank overlooking the bar is a focal point while a window in the back peers into a laboratory equipped with centrifuges and evaporators.

DW Alexander
The King East bar named for a 19th century leather trader boasts a handsome interior designed by The Design Agency. Plaid banquettes, the occasional taxidermy bird and book shelves lining the perimeter five the room an upscale library look.

Cocktail Bar
The candlelit cocktail lounge on Dundas West boasts tin ceilings, white subway tiles, powder coated blue bar stools and salvaged windows framing bottles behind the bar.

Spirithouse
The bar on Adelaide is an amalgamation of industrial elements (exposed ceilings for example and salvaged wood tables for instance) and luxe furnishings (think glossy leather lounge chairs and a thick marble bar). There's little artwork or unnecessary adornment but the spirits collection is on prominent display.

dave chappelle torontoIf you didn't get tickets to one of Dave Chappelle's sold-out Toronto shows, don't despair because the comedian added four additional performances to his five night run - from February 9 to 13 - at the Danforth Music Hall.

Now, Chappelle will take to the stage twice on February 9, 10, 12 and 13 - at both 7 and 10 p.m. Tickets for these late-night shows go on sale tomorrow (Thursday) at 10 a.m.

If you didn't get lucky last time, you better act quickly if you're looking to snag at spot at one of the newly announced shows. And remember, these tickets are non-transferable, so do your research before buying a pair on an unauthorized site, such as Kijiji.

Toronto now has office chair yoga

office chair yogaIf you're looking to combat sitting disease without actually getting up, there's a new Toronto-based company you can check out.

Inna Miretski launched UTKATA Yoga early last month, but she's been practicing yoga for more than nine years. Other Toronto studios offer chair-based yoga, but as far as she knows, UTKATA is the only one that brings it directly into local offices.

"UTKATA's office chair yoga service is delivered in 30-minute sessions that do not require a mat or a change of clothes and are specifically designed to bring an island of peace and tranquility to the hectic office environment," says Miretski via email.

Each half-an-hour session costs $75 regardless of how many people participate. Miretski currently teaches her brand of yoga to three downtown-area offices and she'll also be running a workshop for staff at St. Michael's Hospital in the near future.

Would you try office chair yoga? Let us know in the comments.

toronto weatherIf you feel like heading to a patio today in Toronto you're not alone. That's because at 15.5 C (at 2 p.m.), it's the hottest February day on record.

We set the previous February 3 record in 1991 when the thermometer hit 9.3 C. And, until now, February 23, 1984 was the warmest February day ever at 14.9 C.

Whether you're fearful of these unseasonably warm temperatures or not, enjoy this balmy Wednesday while you can. Environment Canada predicts it'll be feeling more like February as early as tomorrow.

super bowl torontoSuper Bowl 50 between the Panthers and the Broncos goes down this Sunday February 7 and Toronto bars and restaurants are getting ready for the big event with booze and big screens. Below is a round-up of places that have revealed their plans for the big day. For additional destinations, check out our lists of the topsports bars in Toronto.

Here are my picks for where to watch the Super Bowl in Toronto.

WHERE TO WATCH THE GAME

Early Mercy
Head to King West for Early Mercy's first Super Bowl bash. The event will feature a pub-style buffet ($25 per person), buckets of beer and plenty of post-game shenanigans.

The Addisons
Ring in the Super Bowl with a house party vibe. The venue, made to look like a retro home in Beverly Hills, is hosting a tailgate party kicking off at 3 p.m. Expect plenty of drink specials, games, party snacks and giveaways.

SET
This King West dance club is where to go if you want to skip gorging on wings at a dive bar. Its Super Bowl 50 affair will have 150" projection screens, free foosball, a top-notch menu, giveaways and more.

Fuse Restaurant Entertainment Emporium
Fuse, a new venue/restaurant hybrid in Corktown, is hosting Broalition Presents Super Bowl 50 & After Party. You'll get to watch the game on big screens while taking advantage of food and drink specials (menu is TBA).

The Ballroom
Hit up this Club District spot for a good old fashioned pig roast. Aside from eats more interesting than your average game day menu items, you'll find discounted drinks and plenty of giveaways.

Drake Hotel
If you've been jonesing for nachos, burgers, wings and beer, The Drake has got your back. It's cooking up a game day feast filled with pub fare favourites for its tailgate party this Sunday.

Hemingway's
Hemingway's tailgate party isn't the flashiest in the city, but it's got all the necessities: hot dogs, chilli, cheap tall cans and multiple big screens.

The Office Pub
The Office Pub is hosting its 5th annual Super Bowl bash on Sunday. Entry costs $40 and includes three domestic drinks and an AYCE buffet. Want more? There's a burlesque half-time show and prizes, as well.

Lithuanian House/Bar Lokys
In the market for something a little different than your average tailgating festivities? Head to the party at Lithuanian House. Before the game kicks off watch live pro wrestling in the main event space and then move downstairs to Bar Lokys to enjoy the game.

Smoque N Bones
The West Queen West eatery hasn't released very many details on its Super Bowl event, but if you're a lover of barbecue fare you won't walk away disappointed - it has some of the best in the city.

The Hideout
The Hideout offers comfy couches, drink specials, darts, pool and snacks. If you chili is your go-to game day meal you're in luck; the Queen West bar is also hosting a cook-off in honour of the event.

Bistro 422
Bistro 422 is a no fuss, no muss option. Grab one of its extra cheap beverages, kick back and enjoy the game.

Dominion Pub & Kitchen
The new incarnation of the Dominion on Queen is hosting its first ever Super Bowl fiesta this weekend. You'll find cheap beer, $4 caesars, themed eats, games, prizes and more.

Wayne Gretzky's
Football may not be the sport of its namesake, but Wayne Gretzky's doesn't discriminate. It's throwing a game day party complete with AYCE pub food and prizes.

Football Factory
Though Football Factory is a soccer bar through and through, it's throwing a bash for American football's biggest night. Expect giveaways, squares boards, specials and good company.

McQueen's Pub
This Leslieville pub is hosting a shindig with cheap drinks, pub grub specials, and prizes to be won.

Spirits Bar and Grill
If you're in the Church Wellesley Village area, Spirits is a tried-and-true option for game watching. The sports bar is hosting a viewing party complete with cheap sandwiches, wings and pints.

Skin + Bones
Skin + Bones is known for serving eats like rapini croquettes and house-made gnocci, but it's trading that in for a menu filled with pub fare (and $5 tall boys) for game day. Its party will also have a 17-foot HD screen, so you won't have to worry about squinting to see the plays.

The Abby
Trying to save your pennies? This laid-back Little Italy joint is throwing a viewing party complete with $5 pints and $5 burger and fries specials.

Safari Bar & Grill
The best sports bar in the Avenue and Lawrence area is celebrating football's big day with massive screens, beer and food specials, free pool and prizes.

The Loaded Dog
The Loaded Dog has yet to release details about its party, but the Scarborough bar is used to catering to sports fans and has a menu filled with pub grub.

The Gull and Firkin
The Gull and Firkin, one of the few sports bars in the Beaches, is hosting a bash featuring barbecue eats, tall boy specials and half-time contests.

Duke of York
If you're a U of T student, you're in luck. The Duke of York is hosting an exclusive game day wing-a-thon that requires your TCard for entry.

Duffy's Tavern
Duffy's Tavern in Bloordale Village is hosting a no frills viewing party with a 15-foot screen and food and drink specials.

Rally Sports Bar and Smokehouse
This East York outpost is well-equipped for game day: the space is 7000 square feet, features 40 HD TVs and specializes in barbecue fare. In honour of the big event it's doing a AYCE buffet and giving away prizes.

The Grover
If you're a resident of the Upper Beaches, head to The Grover on game day. The party here will have a special menu, drink deals, giveaways and trivia.

Camp 4
One of the city's top sneaker stores is teaming up with the Dundas West watering hole for a Super Bowl bash. Details are still being hashed out, but you should aim to arrive early as capacity is limited.

Williams Landing
Equipped with 18 big screens and two projectors, this Liberty Village pub is worth leaving your living room for. Instead of attempting to craft your own seven layer dip, opt to indulge in pub fare at Williams Landing's annual buffet and pig roast celebration.

Hunters Landing
Hunters Landing, unsurprisingly, is hosting a very similar event down near the Harbourfront. It's offering big screens, a pig roast, an AYCE buffet and prizes.

The Corner House
The Corner House on Gerrard Street East is having a low-key celebration on the 7th. You'll find nacho and drink deals plus plenty of screens to watch the game.

Drums N Flats
If the Super Bowl had a signature dish it would be wings, and Drums N Flats has some of the best in the city. Post up with a plate of flaming hot drumsticks and watch the Panthers and Broncos go head-to-head on one of the many flat screens.

TAKE-HOME SUPER BOWL

Barque
One of the city's top barbecue joints is offering a series of take-home options including favourites like smoked chicken wings, corndog bites and taco kits. Get your orders in by Thursday or you'll have to settle for something else.

Momofuku
If you're looking for something a little swankier than traditional game day eats, opt for Momofuku. The restaurant is offering packages that'll serve 1-12 people with everything from Korean style fried chicken to roasted pig head.

SanRemo Bakery
SanRemo Bakery is an Etobicoke institution best known for its freshly-baked breads and pastries. While those would be welcome at any Super Bowl bash, you may want to take advantage of one of its specials. For the day it's offering wing and pizza combos that serve big crowds and won't break the bank.

Lisa Marie
This Queen West favourite is offering a bevy of traditional game day snacks available for take out. Its menu includes coleslaw, mac n' cheese, fried chicken, BBQ pork ribs and more.

The Friendly Butcher
In honour of the Super Bowl, The Friendly Butcher has created a meat-centric take-out menu. You can order favourites like chicken wings, pork ribs and chilli con carne. They also have snackable items like chips, guac and seven layer dip available.

Pili Pili
Pili Pili is doing traditional Super Bowl snacks with a Tanzanian flare for Sunday's game. Its take-out menu includes Pili Pili nachos, fried kebabs, poussin poutine and more.

Big Crow
Big Crow has stacked its Super Bowl Sunday menu with ribs, wings, chuck chilli, garlic bread and much more. Remember to place your order before Thursday or you may have to DIY.

Marky's BBQ Smokehouse
Marky's is making large-scale platters for game day filled with barbecue favourites. If you've got more than ten people attending your event, this is the way to go.

The top 23 nachos in Toronto by neighbourhood

nachos torontoNachos are an all-time fave when it comes to pub grub in Toronto. No matter if you like 'em with the classic combination of tortilla chips, cheese and salsa, or relish in the occasional creative spin (think wonton chips, kimchi or roasted pig's head), there's a platter of nachos nearby at a sports bar, pub or Mexican grill in your 'hood.

Here are my picks for the top nachos in Toronto by neighbourhood.

ANNEX
Victory Cafe is home to a winning plate of nachos ($10.95) that come loaded with cheddar and mozzarella cheese, red peppers and jalapenos. Salsa and sour cream are served on the side for dipping while extras like veggie chili or guacamole can be added on for $2.95 each.

BLOORCOURT
Satisfy your nacho cravings at Disgraceland with the D-Land Nachos ($12/$15), a mass of corn tortilla chips covered with cheddar and mozzarella, red onions, peppers, salsa and black bean corn salsa. Guac' and sour cream come on the side.

BLOOR WEST VILLAGE
The Nachos el Kennedio ($17) at The Kennedy Public House start with house-made kettle-cooked tortilla chips that are smothered with jalapeno jack cheese sauce and topped with bell peppers, jalapenos, banana peppers, marinated tomatoes, shredded lettuce, salsa verde, and lime ancho sour cream.

nachos torontoCHINATOWN
For a novel but delicious take on nachos, head to Lucky Red where Nachos Koreano ($8) resemble the Tex-Mex staple, but are really more closely related to dumplings. Instead of chips, the base consists of flattened and deep-fried wontons filled with pork, while the toppings include cheese, kimchi salsa, spicy Korean mayo and scallions.

CHURCH WELLESLEY VILLAGE
At Hair Of The Dog, the nachos ($14) are constructed with house-made corn and flour tortilla chips piled with chopped tomatoes, scallions, jalapenos, olives, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, and fresh salsa and sour cream on the side. Add guac' for $2 or protein it up with ground beef (+$5), chorizo (+$5), chicken (+$5) or tofu (+$4).

CORKTOWN
Black Irish Whiskey Bar & Oyster Saloon is home to classic beef nachos ($16) as well as a deluxe version topped with lobster ($22), served with salsa and sour cream on the side.

THE DANFORTH
Morgans on the Danforth manages to make deliciously addictive nachos for $10 - something you'd think would be commonplace but isn't. Here the nachos start with a pile of hand-cut tortillas to which Monterey Jack is applied along with roasted corn black bean chili, sour cream and salsa.

DUNDAS WEST
The Dock Ellis skips the standard tortilla chips and instead uses crispy wontons for its nachos ($10). Cheese sauce coverage is maximize by the shallow but wide presentation on a platter. The wontons are layered with salsa, pickled jalapenos, crema and a choice of chorizo sausage or beans.

EAST YORK
The Nacho Libre Platter ($14) at Rally Sports Bar & Smokehouse is an excellent iteration of nachos. This dish starts with crispy corn tortillas and is layered with a blend of cheeses, beef chili, onions, jalapenos and olives. Pulled pork (+$4) and guac' (+$4) are extra, but sour cream and salsa are supplied on the side for dipping.

ETOBICOKE
The Refinery Public House does a killer batch of nachos ($6.95) served in a sizzling skillet. The dish features corn tortillas topped with onions, peppers, olives and a mix of cheeses. Essentials like sour cream and salsa arrive on the side while supplements include taco beef (+$1.95), beef brisket (+$2.95), chicken breast (+$2.95) and guacamole (+$1.75).

FINANCIAL DISTRICT
Real Sports Bar naturally excels at sports bar staples, and the nachos ($18) are no exception. Here they're blanketed in a three-cheese blend, loaded with jalapenos and pico de gallo, and drizzled with sour cream. Sure they're pricey as is, but you're going to splurge with beef, chicken or pulled pork, too (+$4.50 each).

THE JUNCTION
The chorizo nachos ($12) at Playa Cabana Cantina start with a base of fresh tortilla chips, to which they add a mix of melted oaxaca and mozzarella cheeses made extra gooey on the flat top. Chorizo, guacamole, crema, and cholula hot sauce finish it off along with crunchy fresh cabbage, radish and green onions.

KING EAST
The Scotland Yard does nachos a few different ways. Get tortillas smothered in monterey jack and cheddar cheese, jalapenos, diced tomato and scallions ($13) and optional pulled pork (+$6), guacamole (+$4) and chicken (+$5). A loaded version ($17.50) gets an extra helping of cheese along with chili, while the Nachomari ($19) is a souped-up version with crispy calamari.

LESLIEVILLE
Little AAA applies the cheese over ground beef and chips when prepping its nachos ($16) so that it melts into all the nooks and crannies. Fresh toppings like shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, jalapenos and scallions are added at the end to brighten it up.

LITTLE ITALY
Sneaky Dee's is famous for its Kings Crown ($20.75), an oversized portion of corn tortillas covered with melted cheese, salsa roja, frijoles, ground beef, fresh veggies, jalapenos and dollops of guacamole and sour cream.

nachos TorontoQUEEN WEST
Bar Hop Brewco does a non-traditional take on this pub staple. The roasted pig head nachos ($36) feature an entire reassembled roasted pig's head over freshly fried tortilla chips, sour cream, pickled jalapenos, guacamole, honey mustard and a cabbage slaw.

RIVERSIDE
The one-layer baker's tray nachos ($17.95) at Prohibition are a sprawling single layer that achieves maximum cheese coverage. The dish starts with hand-cut corn tortillas smothered in a "Mexicana" blend of cheese, diced jalapenos, sweet red peppers, salsa rojo, scallions with crema and guacamole. Get fancy with additions like duck fat confit-pulled pork for $5 more.

RONCESVALLES
Cardinal Rule builds its nachos ($14) on a base of corn chips and tops them with black beans, corn, a four-cheese blend and a choice of brisket, smoked chicken or a tofu-salsa.

ST. CLAIR WEST
The list of botana at Tenoch includes the nachos con camaron ($14) featuring a medley of shrimp. tomato, onion, cilantro, cream and cheese over a base of corn tortillas.

WEST QUEEN WEST
The Dirty Nachos ($9) at Bar Fancy are doused with cheese sauce and sour cream, then topped with pickled onions, jalapeno rings and shredded lettuce. Guacamole comes on the side!

YONGE & GERRARD
Lou Dawg's does some pretty killer nachos smothered with cheese curds and a black bean and corn salad. Have them with the house-smoked brisket ($16.95), pulled chicken ($15.95), pulled pork ($14.85) or veggie chili ($13.95), all served with jalapenos, salsa and sour cream.

YONGE & DUNDAS
Nacho Boards are a big deal at Duke's Refresher. Choose from braised beef, pulled chicken, garlic shrimp, or yuzu-marinated avocado on long ($15.15 to $17.75) or short ($10.65 to $11.95) boards loaded with chips and chopped onions, tomato, red pepper, cheese, iceberg lettuce, cilantro, sour cream and salsa.

YORKVILLE
Museum Tavern does Texas Nachos ($14) that have chips in there somewhere, but it mostly looks like a skillet of gooey, melted cheese dressed with refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, jalapenos and salsa.

What did I miss? Disagree with my selections in the comments.

3 McAlpine Street TorontoA ninth-floor suite at 3 McAlpine Street offers two bedrooms, three bathrooms and an unobstructed view of the city skyline for $910,000. Located in the Domus Condominiums at Bay and Davenport, the two-level penthouse spans 1,400 square feet with a curved white staircase in the middle.

The space is elegant, featuring clean lines and expansive walls. It's ideal for those with sophisticated tastes. The main floor showcases a stainless steel kitchen and a combined living-and-dining area. The second floor flows with natural light thanks to arched windows, a unique design of the building, and a shopaholic master bedroom with triple closets.

3 McAlpine Street TorontoYou can't go wrong with the location. Technically, the building is closer to the Annex but is still steps away from Yorkville and the busy hub of Bloor Street. The top 35 buildings in Toronto

top buildings torontoThe top buildings in Toronto must be divided into two groups: those which came before the construction of New City Hall in 1965 and those which came after. Comparing churches to condos is a mug's game, so this list concerns itself with the latter period.

Besides, everything changed in Toronto when Viljo Revell brought the future to Queen and Bay streets. This spaceship-like civic hub put Toronto on the global architecture map, and we've made good on the promise of this spectacular building by continuing to add to the urban fabric with bold and often beautiful structures that we should all take pride in.

These are my picks for the top buildings in Toronto.

Will it be ready in time for the NBA All-Star weekend? Complex Magazine Canada doesn't think so. However, the Jordan brand tweeted out a new video yesterday to show how its incoming Toronto location is finally starting to come together.

There's currently a massive branded sign on top of the storefront and you can watch it go up in the clip embedded below.

Hayley Elsaesser TorontoAfter taking World MasterCard Fashion Week by storm last year, this clothing designer opened a flagship location oozing with her unusual, in-your-face aesthetic. Prints like gap-toothed smiles, baby pink beer cans and acid trip-esque camouflage are everywhere from the wallpaper to the products themselves. Sensory overload just as you set foot in the door is pretty much unavoidable.

Jazz CartierWeekend events in Toronto will have you celebrating the Super Bowl in style. Bars and event venues are throwing parties with beer, buffets and big screens to celebrate football's biggest day of the year. If you'd rather catch a concert, Jazz Cartier is playing the Phoenix.

For more events this weekend click on over to our events section.

SPORTS

Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 7)
On the 7th, the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers will go head-to-head in the Super Bowl 50. Whether you want to post up at a old and faithful sports bar or attend a full-blown fiesta, there's plenty to do on Sunday in honour of the big game.

MUSIC

Jazz Cartier (Feb. 5)
The rising-star Toronto rapper has been cryptically teasing new material and dropping the occasional surprise track here and there as of late. Though not indicative of a full tour, this pit stop at the Phoenix could be more revealing about his impending 2016 release.

10th Annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute (Feb. 6)
Lee's Palace is hosting its annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute this Saturday and bringing out the House of David Gang with special guests Chronicles Dub Trio ft. Nkrumah & Feeling the One Drop to celebrate. The venue will be accepting canned food donations for Parkdale Community Food Bank, so bring one or two non-perishable items along.

FILM

Cineplex's Great Digital Film Festival (Feb. 5-11)
If you're a fan of sci-fi, fantasy and cult films, you're in luck. Starting Friday, the Great Digital Film Festival will bring classics to Cineplex theatres across the city. This weekend you'll be able to catch Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters, Labyrinth and more for only $6.99.

SHOPPING

Midnight MRKT (Feb. 6)
The Midnight MRKT is returning to 2nd Floor Events for its first market of 2016. As per usual, you'll find local, independent retailers and street food vendors selling everything from loose-leaf teas to handcrafted jewellery. To make shopping more interesting there will be plenty of boozy drinks on hand and DJs spinning all night.

Kuumba (Feb. 5-7)

Queen B vs JT: Battle of the Sexes Video Dance Party (Feb. 6)

DJ Skate Nights: Kizomba, Bachata, Kompa on Ice (Feb. 6)
Head to the Harbourfront Centre on the first Saturday of the month for another DJ Skate Night. The music for this week's installment will be brought to you by Deejay NS, DJ Duck and DJ Kafe. You may not be downing shots on the dance floor, but it's much more cost effective and probably just as fun.
