Study shows people don't like calling Toronto 'The 6ix'

the 6ixHow many times have you told someone you're running through The Six with your woes? Regardless of how much we all love dropping Drake lines in Toronto, apparently, not very many of us actually refer to our city as The 6ix.

This news comes out of a super informative Forum Research poll, which reveals that locals refer to the city most often as Toronto (75 per cent), as opposed to TO (10 per cent), The 6ix (7 per cent), or another, unspecified moniker (8 per cent).

Forum randomly sampled 864 voters to compile these results, which are accurate 19 times out of 20, plus or minus 3 percentage points.

And surprisingly, the majority of respondents (70 per cent) actually pronounce all of the syllables in Toronto. Only 24 per cent said they shorten it to the more manageable "Tronnah."

"We will have to repeat this poll in a year or two to see if the term 'The 6ix' has gained any traction, or, indeed, has survived at all," said Forum Research president Dr. Lorne Bozinoff in a news release. "But for now, "Toronto" is what people call the city, with a brief nod to the classic 'TO'"

Distillery District is getting a huge street festival this fall

distillery district world cup of hockeyWe're all used to seeing the Distillery District decked out for Christmas. But this fall, it'll get a hockey-themed makeover in honour of the NHL's World Cup of Hockey happening at the Air Canada Centre from September 17 to October 1.

The Distillery District will act as the event's Fan Village and it'll host a free 10-day festival from September 16 to 25. It'll take over much of this pedestrian-only neighbourhood as well as a 200,000 square foot lot east of Cherry Street (dubbed the East Fan Village).

Along with streaming games, this fan-focused fest will include live music, a virtual arena and bubble hockey game (think bubble soccer, but better).

The World Cup of Hockey will pit eight teams - Canada, USA, Finland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Russia, Europe and North America - against each other and will include more than 150 NHL players. At the last such tournament in 2004, Canada, of course, took home gold.

cne pokemon goThe CNE usually marks the end of summer, but it's also one of the best parts of the season. From nostalgic treats to outrageous eats and somewhat dubious rides, The Ex is an August tradition for many Torontonians.

And this year, it'll probably become a hot spot for Pokemon Go players. A CNE staffer say that there are 31 PokeStops and four gyms in around the festival grounds. And, they will be dropping lures throughout the exhibition.

Check out a large version of the map here.

pokemon cneAnd this is purely coincidental, but will likely serve as a lure for avid PokeMasters. But will the CNE get as popular with PoGO platers as the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal? We'll just have to wait and see.

rainbow grilled cheeseThe CNE just revealed its 2016 lineup of outrageous, artery-clogging eats. And along with Franken-foods like churro burgers, dessert nachos and steaklairs, you can also grab (and 'gram) a rainbow grilled cheese.

The Cheesery, located in the midway, will be serving up these multi-coloured sandwiches for $8. Each one will come stuffed with oodles of pink, purple, blue and green mozzarella cheese as well as sprinkles on top.

But if you don't feel like tasting the rainbow, the Cheesery will have other goodies on hand, including a bacon grilled cheese, a pulled pork grilled cheese, deep-fried cheese curds and totchos - also known as tater tot nachos.

This majestic-sounding dish will feature deep-friend tots smothered in ground beef, avocado, diced tomatoes, green onion and cheese sauce. Step right up, folk.

The Steampunk scene is back in Toronto

$
0
0

Steampunk TorontoOn this planet there exists a group of people who believe in time travel and a world in which 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery blends with futuristic technologies and frilly fashion.

They are Steampunks, they are badass, and they are quietly invading Toronto.

Despite the looks and mindset of Steampunks - steeped in the past while at the same time always vaguely futuristic - it's a relatively new way of life. Originating sometime in the '80s as a reaction to the ridiculous term cyberpunk, it was a term coined by sci-fi writer K.W. and quickly adopted by a loyal army.

Think Doctor Who, that movie 9, Hugo, A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and The Golden Compass . Hell, check out this collection of Disney Princesses as Steampunk queens and you'll get what I'm talking about.

It's a movement or even a fetish that's been happening all around us on TV and the big screen, in books and in floating pirate ships since most of us were kids.

Thankfully there are organizations like the Toronto Steampunk Society and Steampunk Junction to remind us what is happening in this fantastical subculture group. They often do city tours, film screenings, tea events, photoshoots and dinners.

Paul Neale, one of the organizers at the TO Steampunk Society explains the culture as follows. "It's as if the Victorian age never ended. Like the world never developed diesel fuel or gas items. If someone had never heard of it, you would ask if they had read Jules Vern, or a bad example is [Will Smith's amazing future-Western flop] Wild Wild West."

Trevor Parkins started Steampunk Junction in January of 2015. He gives history walks and talks and has built an impressive 14 Lego streetcars to bring a lost appreciation for how far the city has come in its transportation.

"I'm trying to bring an interest back into history," he says. "Bringing old fashion back into fashion."

Parkins' schtick is that he's a time traveller from the 18th Century who's come back to bring history to the modern world. "Steampunk is essentially Victorian era science fiction," he says. "Frankenstein is totally steampunk for example. It's a literary genre and also a counter culture."

If there was a punk culture off-shoot, Steampunk would be it, but a bit classier.

Upcoming Steampunk events in Toronto

High Park History Walks, August 19-20
Steampunk Junction hosts a High Park History walk on Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20. It's a trek through history from a the mouth and imagination of an 18th Century Steampunker. The park's history will never be as lively as this.

Suburban Steampunk Festival, August 20
Held at the Zion Schoolhouse in North York, this all-day time-travelling event features an outdoors arcade of Steampunk vendors, crafts and activations. It's a festival for people with imagination, who for a few hours want to lose themselves in time and space.

A Gentleman and a Scholar book launch, August 27
A launch party at Tequila Bookworm. This book is part part of Steampunk author Rebecca Diem's Adventures of Captain Duke series.

FanExpo 2016, September 1-4
Many of the Steampunk Society's members will be at FanExpo 2016. Look for Victorian-style get ups mixed with metal and oddball technologies. Like a robot Mary Poppins. They program all Steampunk content at the conference and will have a booth in the north building.

Grand Canadian Steampunk Exposition, September 23-25
Happening around Niagara on the Lake, this weekend long time trip will be heaven for cosplay fans and will feature performances, workshops and panels. This is modern day earth headquarters for Steampunks of Ontario.

Did I miss a Steampunk event or group that you're a fan of? Are you from the past/future and want to make contact? Tell us about it in the comments.

The Best Gluten Free Bakeries in Toronto

gluten free torontoThe best gluten-free bakeries in Toronto are sensitive to those who suffer from celiac disease. While traditional baking tends to rely on gluten to add elasticity to dough, gluten-free baking embraces alternatives, such as almond, corn, and rice flour with fabulous (and very tasty) results.

Here are the best gluten-free bakeries in Toronto.

burlington skywayIf you're afraid of heights, you may not want to watch this video because it appears to show a guy casually strolling on top of the Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway (a.k.a. the Burlington Skyway) at sunset.

In the short clip, a man parks his car on the side of the Skyway and starts running up the side of it. He shows the camera the view and even reveals his face - though it's mostly covered by sunglasses and what looks like a white t-shirt.

Police, as the Toronto Star reports, are currently investigating the video. It was uploaded to the appropriately named idgaf brand YouTube channel on Monday.

Weekend events in Toronto August 19-21 2016

$

weekend events torontoWeekend events in Toronto are bonkers. The city has realized summer is nearly done and have kicked its party senses into high gear. This is like the Vin Diesel of summer weekends. From Camp Wavelength on the Island, the Mad Decent Block party, to Chinatown Fest and Toronto Men's Fashion week, you'll need next week to catch up on sleep.

Here are my picks for what to get up to in Toronto this weekend.

BIG EVENTS

The CNE (August 19-September 5)
There's a lot more to The Ex than the insane food creations, even though this year's lineup is particularly nuts. Rides! Games! A technology garage and a Star Trek-themed bar will all give you ways to spend your money.

Toronto Men's Fashion Week (Mattamy Athletic Centre)
Toronto Fashion Week may have been canned, but there are many other cool fashion events in Toronto, and though it's been plagued by rumours about money and staffing, TOM pushes through. This is the big night to catch 18 Toronto menswear designers in action.

Camp Wavelength (August 19-21, Artscape Gibraltar Point)
You can spend the entire weekend on Toronto Island if you want thanks to this music and culture fest. This weird and wonderful festival lets you camp, watch some bands, see some art, and makes friends along the way.

Tragically Hip screenings (August 20, various locations)
The Tragically Hip are playing their final concert in Kingston on Saturday. Because there haven't been tickets available to the show since the minute they went on sale, a bunch of Toronto venues have chosen to help people out. Everywhere from the CBC headquarters to Union Station to your fave local is playing the big show.

Chinatown Festival (August 20-21, Spadina Avenue)
Asian and international street foods, dragon and lion dances, martial arts and entertainment performances all happen during this big street fest with the theme of Legend of the Dragon.

5th Annual Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest (August 20-21, Albert Campbell Square)
Featuring food, a cultural fashion show, dance competitions, and drum and dance workshops, this festival celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of Toronto's Afro-Caribbean culture from 12-9 p.m. both days

Zine Dream: small press fair (The Great Hall)
Featuring over 90 exhibitors of self published art books, comics, crafts, music, zines and much more, this PWYC zine fair takes place 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the downstairs hall. Find out why print is still relevant and beautiful.

Open Streets (August 21, Yonge Street and Bloor Street)
Ever want to star in an action film about post-apocalyptic Toronto? Empty streets, only lucky survivors? A few rats... etc. Well now you mostly can. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Bloor St. (from Dufferin to Parliament) and Yonge St. (from Bloor to Queen) will be closed to cars and opened solely for people. Run free!

FOOD

Hot & Spicy Food Fest (August 19-21, Harbourfront)
Exploring diverse "hot" food experiences from around the globe, this food fest follows the Lower Mississippi River, through the American South into the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean for its culinary inspiration. There'll also be bluesy, jazzy, festive and tropical sounds to help move you.

Sweetery Food Festival (August 20, David Pecaut Square)
The dessert-centric event celebrates "the whimsical world of confectionery and culinary arts." You can get so many treats all over the city anytime, but this is a highly concentrated area with sugar if you're into it.

MexFest (August 21, Yonge-Dundas Square)
Mexican art, culture and cuisine are highlighted at this downtown celebration. Admission is free and it runs 11a.m.-11p.m.

MUSIC

Mad Decent Block Party (August 19, Fort York)
There's a lot of good music happening this weekend in the city, but the Mad Decent Block Party is a guaranteed blast. The lineup this year includes giant noisemakers like Bishu,
Diplo, Grandtheft, and Louis The Child among many others. Bring your ear plugs and bouncy dancing shoes.

FILM

The Sail-in Cinema at Sugar Beach started Thursday, but runs Friday and Saturday as well. But that's not the only outdoor movie event this weekend. And if you need to sit on a cozy theatre seat with popcorn, head to the suggested flicks below and let them entertain you.

DANCING

Have an event you'd like to plug? Submit your own listing to the blogTO Toronto events section and have a great weekend!

Stranger Things parties now happening at Toronto bars

$

stranger things torontoFilling the gaping hole left by lack of additional episodes to watch after the wrap of the first season of Stranger Things are parties devoted to the show at bars in Toronto. There was a Stranger Things party last week at Edenhall and tonight there's an event dedicated to one of the show's quirkiest characters.

For hardcore fans, Barb was a standout character despite her modest screen time. There's something about this sassy ginger nerd vixen that viewers instantly latched onto, and that's being celebrated with a night of music, drinks and other surprises at the Yukon.

What about Barb? is a night being thrown by the bar's manager Scott McCallum because he and so many other fans believes Barb Holland deserves more.

"We'll have a drink inspired by Barb, called the 'I'm Chill,'" McCallum says."It'll be complex but restrained, sweet but serious, a refreshing low alcohol drink."

The idea for the party germinated with McCallum's creative flick of the wrist. "I adjusted the font for our bar name on our chalkboard sign to be in the Stranger Things title font," he says, "which started so much conversation within the bar that it pushed me to do more."

At the party you'll be able to witness some "live Barb-inspired chalk art by some talented local artists, add an entry to Barb's diary, even play a song on guitar or do a reading if you're feeling so moved."

McCallum says it's an inclusive welcoming space and he wants people to feel free to "share the love and goodness that Barb inspired."

There's also obviously an inspired playlist. "For the playlist I'm trying to have songs that lyrically relate to Barb's character struggles and interactions within the show, or capture an admirers viewpoint," McCallum explains.

"I'm also trying to keep [it] in tune with the atmosphere of the show and era appropriate, 1983, but I'm making exceptions for excellent fits. Some are darker than other for example, Siouxsie and The Banshees' song 'Pulled to Bits.'"

"Lionel Ritchie's 'All Night Long' was number 1 for weeks in November, 1983. While I think Barb might have acted like she hated that song, I can totally picture her singing along with it when she's at home alone. There's also a few songs from the show, obviously "'Should I stay or Should I go.'"

A dreamy/creepy night of nostalgic music and like-minded folks in the mood to relive their teenage years, or just that summer horror flick vibe. All wrapped in a bow to Barb.

"[Barb was] perfectly emblematic of that awkwardness that resonates with so many
people when remembering their high school years," McCallum concludes.

"She also leaves us with a gut wrenching feeling of loss and uncertainty and so many questions. Why is there no search party for Barb? What's up with her parents? I know that her mom seemed worried, but I mean, come on..."

Toronto ranked 4th most livable city in the world

torontoOnce again, Toronto has cracked the top five on the Economist Intelligence Unit's list of most liveable cities in the world. We ranked number four, right in front of Calgary and Adelaide, Australia, which tied for fifth place.

Melbourne, Australia, Vienna, Austria, and Vancouver rounded out the top three spots, respectively.

The Economist looked at 140 cities, measuring and ranking them on a variety of different factors that affect an individual's quality of life. Toronto scored high in many areas, but didn't do as well in areas such as infrastructure.

Yet, this high ranking doesn't come as much of a surprise, considering we frequently score well on these types of studies.

Here are the top 10 most liveable cities:

  • Melbourne, Australia
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Vancouver, Canada
  • Toronto, Canada
  • Calgary, Canada with Adelaide, Australia
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Perth, Australia
  • Auckland, New Zealand
  • Helsinki, Finland and Zurich, Switzerland

Yes, the Etobicoke-based racetrack is hiring a Pokemon Go Administrator to drop lures at its (wait for it) Pokemon Go-themed job fair - that's a slightly less cringe-inducing way to attract hip, young employees than when this Microsoft recruiter referred to millennials as "bae interns."

"We are looking for people who can appreciate innovation and who can reflect WEG 's values," reads the job description. "Simply submit your resume and a brief paragraph stating why you would 'Be All In!' as our Pokemon Go Administrator!"

Andre De Grasse wins silver medal at Rio Olympics

andre de grasseAndre De Grasse almost stunned the world tonight, falling to two time defending champion Usain Bolt in the final of the 200m at the Rio Olympics. The Scarborough born De Grasse was widely expected to contend for a medal after the blistering bromance in the semis.

De Grasse clocked in at 20.02. Bolt was at 19.78, well short of his personal best and world record 19.19 time set back in 2009 in Berlin. Prior to the games he had suggested he might be the first athlete to break the 19 second barrier in the distance.

De Grasse clearly has a bright upside and will likely be the favourite to win gold in both the 200 and 100 metres at the 2020 games in Tokyo.
